OK, the MMS thing I'm kinda upset about (hello 1998?) but whatever, maybe the need to add capacity or something. What has me pissed off is there's no date on tethering. Just that at&t isn't currently supporting it... Well, when the heck will they? Could this be the end of at&t exclusive? Apple kinda went "look at all these cool features!! btw a couple of the most requested features you can't use in the U.S. but will be available in other countries and other carriers. kthx"

Frankly I'd be thrilled if they just made their stupid hack for supporting MMS on the iPhone vaguaely user friendly. As it is I have to go back and forth between SMS and my browser, trying to remember what the username and password are. Sure, with cut and paste that'll be easier, but why not just give me a one-use URL that does the job?

Worst. Implementation. Ever.

As for tethering, this is a no-brainer. I mean if they need to charge more to compensate for the additional bandwidth usage, that makes sense. I could tether on my windows mobile on the t-mobile network for heaven's sake.

I downloaded the app MMSbuddy.... best thing ever It works great everytime and has made me really not care about not having MMS

"AT&T Inc. (T) spokesman Mark Siegel says the carrier will eventually offer both features to customers. Picture and video messaging is due sometime this summer, he said. But Siegel didn't offer a date when tethering, as the other feature's known, will be available.

That's not too bad. It better work when it arrives, however.

They're in the process of updating their networks I think. So I guess that has something to do with it. We all know that MMS would get a ton more burn on an iPhone than other devices and the network needs to be prepared for it. Same thing happened with Apple and the Push Notifications.

Why not today?

I have been waiting for today to get the new update, and now they delayed it to the 17th :(. I am really annoyed.

Voice recognition

Anyone know if this a hardware dependent issue?
I can't figure out why it should be and thus why it is available only on the 3G S?

I wonder the same, but probably so: the 3GS has a much faster processor, supposedly. (And it's possible that the new hold-a-second operation of the Home button has to be hard-coded--I can't say. That button certainly can respond even when the OS is locked--it's part of the reset command--so it's not software alone.)

There was no delay. It was never scheduled for release today.

Sad....

That the price of the phone is now comparable with ONE MONTH's Service...

How much for the new phone only without the service? Larger Battery, can replace my first Gen ipod touch..

I called Rogers' iPhone department to find out about the new iPhone, MMS and Tethering.

- They're getting it June 19th :)
- MMS is 15¢ each
- Tethering is built into the iPhone. You use your existing data plan. No extra costs :D

... I guess the 6GB which was theoretically "Unlimited Data" since you were unlikely to use that much data with the phone, has suddenly become a real limit.

I work out of coffee houses and use their WiFi when available but tethering via my iPhone will guarantee I always have a connection. However... the 6GB cap will be a lot easier to break with a laptop.

excellent... I'm on Fido, who I assume will have the same policy. I look forward to using my 6GB far more effectively via tethering... plus I have a WinMo Value Pack which includes 1000MMS... now if only more people would actually want me to send them picture messages...

I don't believe so [gentlegiantcrai].... where did you hear that from?

All apps that are not up to par with the 3.0 OS wont work.... I thought I heard that somewhere, and with NEtshare never receiving a update (in the U.S.).

"If your app submission is not compatible with iPhone OS 3.0, it will not be approved. Existing apps in the App Store should already run on iPhone OS 3.0 without modification, but you should test your existing apps with iPhone OS 3.0 to ensure there are no compatibility issues.

"After iPhone OS 3.0 becomes available to customers, any app that is incompatible with iPhone OS 3.0 may be removed from the App Store." - http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...new-iphone-apps-must-by-3-0-compatible-597287

I guess we will see when 3.0 is released.

Oh for God's sake. What a bunch of crying babies.

Having to wait a couple of months for MMS... waaggghhhh!!!

Perhaps not getting tethering (although that's not certain and it is in AT&T's interest to offer it).....waaaaagggghhh!!!

It's your own fault for living in a backwards country. Mind you, it will be pretty funny if users in Niger get these features before Yanks.

Get some perspective and stop acting like spoiled brats.

one can argue that you being all high and mighty may be just as bad.

Just installed it

I just installed it (I'm a developer). The total upgrade took 12 minutes on my Windows PC at work (I used the Shift-Check for Updates feature). It installed without having to activate itself again or restore any of my files and settings. YMMV though... I was updating from Beta 5, not 2.2.

Again, i'm not positive but i'm pretty sure NetShare will still work with 3.0, I believe I heard that from one of the devs that has access to SDK

Suck it, Apple.

Thanks for pretending my iPhone gen. 1 can't do MMS (BULL****), and can't manage any video (Cycorder, anybody?). I'm going to stick by ATT because my rate plan is amazing (grandfathered family plan+ $20/month iPhone gen 1 addon package for data+200SMS)...but time to ditch the iPhone for a Nokia.

I wish apple would stop being vague about non ATT carries, WHICH carriers will support MMS and tethering and when?
Even their press release doesn't want to say, anyone know if o2 will have MMS from day 1?

Why so many negatives to such a positive news post?

New iPhone. Compass, better camera, better hardware. So there's no front facing camera (I was looking forward to that) the hardware and software announcements have more than made up for that shortcoming. But internet tethering will be a great feature. Heh, its even faster than my home 800kbps connection so chances are I'll be using my iPhone tethered to my iMac instead of using BT's slow connections.

Ah the mac world is a funny one.

Well I have to wait a month to get the 3Gs due to upgrade qualification issues, and it's not a big deal I guess. Never used Cycorder when I had it, rarely use MMS and I use the company's mobile broadband card for tethering. I can wait. Nice pic of Kim Il-Sung in your avatar Agathon.

Oh no I have an old 2G. Ah so the price hike is for those who still have 2year contract?
I have a 2G that I want to upgrade, so that'd be OK with me, but it seems insane to charge 3G owners more for upgrading, they are really doing everything they can to drive people to a different carrier and hence, phone *cough*Pre*cough*

Related question: If I upgrade my 2G to a 3GS at the $199 price, will I have to start a whole new 2-year AT&T contract? If that's the case, I may just wait and see if Verizon is in the future.

You suck, AT&T. Apple needs to drop these clowns if they want to keep a happy user base, they are really doing serious harm the iPhone experience, making it harder for people (like me) to be excited about showing off the phone and getting them new customers. Quite honestly it's embarrassing to have to explain how the phone won't do MMS, voice dialing, video, etc., so I just don't even bother trying to convert people anymore.
