Doesn't the 2G iPhone and 3G iPhone use the exact same hardware, except for the 3G chip?

Therefore, the 3G is pretty much the 2G iPhone in terms of CPU power.

So why would they leave out 2G, besides getting people to upgrade?

CPU-wise, perhaps the multitasking aspect (if it really is there) will require at least a 3GS?

probably.....

It is probably so people will want to upgrade. For instance, there is no real reason why the iPhone 3G didn't receive voice control. They did it most likely to get Gen 2G and 3G users to buy the iPhone 3Gs.

Unless I am missing something...

From a technical standpoint, there is no reason 4.0 should be available for the 3G and not for the original iPhone. They have the same processor and RAM. And unless they reduce the amount of RAM that the OS uses, I also doubt that it will work on the 3G. It has a difficult enough time running third party apps if you have Safari or iPod loaded in the background.

However, from a bottom line standpoint, Apple might have decided that the original iPhone is no longer worth developing for because everyone should have upgraded by now. Even if it is just a few tweaks for lack of GPS, slower data rate, etc.

anyone elses 3g run slow? many times i start up an app and there is probably a 5 second lag till i can actually start typing. even after that, the typing isn't exactly synced up.

These reports make me glad I haven't gotten an iPhone yet.

Sure, I get no service here, being 30 miles from AT&T. -_-; But, I can imagine these phones will continue to get better and better with greater computing power as time goes by.

Maybe another 3 years and I will be able to get a truly amazing computer phone, assuming Apple expands service.
Why nothing for iPod touch?

I'd assume it is trickle-down. What comes for iPhone now will be in iPT shortly.

Only one thing

There's literally only one thing I want to do in the background that I currently can't do - play the XM Online player.

The only other excuse for backgrounding apps (besides streaming audio) is apps that do not save state properly or that have lengthy delays in resuming (I'm talking to you, Apple Texas Hold'Em!), and I blame the apps for that, not the OS.

The existing solution for backgrounding phone calls, tethering (for those who are allowed), Nike+ sessions and the like (putting the colored banner at the top of the screen) would be just fine. If you had multiple backgrounded things, then perhaps you could slide left and right to shift the banners between the backgrounded apps to pick the one you want. That would make it somewhat like the ALT-TAB widget in MacOS X.

I think you're supposed to see a doctor after 4hrs if that happens...

Anywho, I'm not jonesing for it, but multitasking would be welcome on my 3GS with 4.0, so long as it can be jailbroken. :)
This sounds like the year I'm going to get a new Apple product. I didn't really see a need to spend money on something that didn't do what I wanted. I'm still more concerned about the hardware right now that. That's going to be the deciding factor.

I honestly doubt any real refresh on the ui/interface. Apple usually keeps usability pretty much the same from os updates to os updates maybe with a little more eye candy. But I think the general look of a bunch of icons scattered across pages is gonna be the same.

Throw in a way for me to store and send files on my 3GS and ill love apple for the rest of my life.

WOW, Multitasking! Maybe we can get a iPhone with a camera flash, before the world ends in 2012?

Notifications

I hope to god there is an Android-style notification shade/bar. The Notifications system in iPhone is a mess.

If you are a 3G owner like me there is no real point upgrading and signing up for another two years on AT&T. Better to wait till the end of the year and see what the new phone will look like and maybe even maybe get a choice of carriers.

Give me reception or give me...Verizon. At least a choice. Oh, well, the other smart phones are not as good, but if I can actually make a phone call with one, and I can get an appropriate plan where I am not subsidizing millions of texting teenagers, then I gots to go there.

Finally, our long national nightmare is over. I, for one, welcome our new battery-sucking background apps.

1) GPS navigation apps
2) location-aware apps (like google latitude, etc.)
3) a zillion apps for which "background notifications" are not a real option (because they run with a delay, because they are too inflexible, or because the developer can't afford to dedicate a server to them without charging you a subscription fee)

...anyone still hoping for a full Mac OS X running on the iSlate is going to be disappointed then.

Companies work hard in improving models of hardware and when they feel users should upgrade they indirectly suggest this by providing updates. They do this by simply having features specific to a device. Much like the current iteration of the "Lack" of Voice Control with the 3G but it's included in the 3GS.

This also helps a company when it comes to servicing needs. If every consumer is running a 3GS it makes it easier for apples support staff to better service them. This also cuts cost down.

Apple knows not everyone upgrades immediately so the "slowly" push users to upgrade this way.

It's much harder to do this from a Full OS standpoint, Though for smaller devices and a mobile version OS it's rather easy.

BOTTOM LINE APPLE IS STILL A BUSINESS AND PREFER WE UPDATE TO THE LATEST AND GREATEST.
