I predicted this more than a year ago! :D I am SOOOOOOOO EXCITED for next Wednesday!!!

Oh, and the original iPhone being excluded is acceptable I think. Apple has done a very good job of keeping the platform consistent thus far, but there is only so much they can do when the original iPhones hardware is already quite dated.

We seem to forget that this is totally in line with the explanation that Apple has been feeding us all along: that their interpretation of GAAP dictates when they are allowed to provide updates for free. They amortized the money they received for the sale of the iPhone over a 24 month period, during which time they were allowed to add new features to the iPhone free of charge.

Now that it has been more than 24 months since the original iPhones went on sale, the 24-month amortization period for the original iPhones is used up. Which would mean that, if they wanted to add any more new features to the original iPhone, they would have to start charging for them.

But that would make average, non-savvy original iPhone owners angry, because they have to pay for something which is being given to other iPhone users for free. (These non-savvy users don't care about any distinction between original iPhones and 3G or 3GS iPhones, or amortization periods or anything like that.)

Rather than charging some iPhone owners for something that is free for other iPhone owners, it would probably less incite less resentment to simply say that the new OS is simply unavailable to original iPhone owners under any circumstances, but still free for newer owners. While there's still a double standard, it's a double standard which would probably be easier to accept.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ecosystem, iPod touch users are already used to the fact that they have to pay for every new major version upgrade of the OS. So first generation iPod touch users probably would have been willing to pay for the upgrade to OS 4.0 as well. But that would also serve as another way to alienate original iPhone owners: first generation iPod touches are allowed to purchase the new OS, but first generation iPhones are not.

Again in an effort to avoid inciting too much resentment, the same standard will probably be applied to original iPod touch owners as to original iPhone users: original iPod touches will not be able to use the OS, but newer iPod touch users will be allowed to purchase it as always.

It would be perfectly reasonable on Apple's part to compromise between adhering to their established plan for implementing their interpretation of GAAP, whilst minimizing the number of people who end up getting pissed off in response. And it also presents a perfect opportunity to make a clean break from the older hardware and introduce kick-ass new features which wouldn't have performed very well on the older machines anyway.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

Hmm CardDAV syncing maybe. Specially as snow leopard server supports it.

Sounds good to me...guess Palm will have to find a new angle other than "ours can do two things at once" after this comes out

WOW, Multitasking! Maybe we can get a iPhone with a camera flash, before the world ends in 2012?

No kidding, eh? I don't get it. The iPhone actually LAGS in some areas for long periods of time and when Apple finally gets around to upgrading the phone to equal existing competing smartphones, you get all excited... which I can't fault you for.

I get irked by the peaks and valleys of the iPhone when its supposedly market as this Wunder Device that's suppose to excel in all areas.

Sync over wifi sure would be nice...

And a consolidated email inbox- optional, of course, but it could just show all new emails.

If you want the new os you nee to buy the newer phone clearly apple needs people to keep buying phones otherwise the Market dries up

Unless I am missing something...

From a technical standpoint, there is no reason 4.0 should be available for the 3G and not for the original iPhone. They have the same processor and RAM. And unless they reduce the amount of RAM that the OS uses, I also doubt that it will work on the 3G. It has a difficult enough time running third party apps if you have Safari or iPod loaded in the background.

However, from a bottom line standpoint, Apple might have decided that the original iPhone is no longer worth developing for because everyone should have upgraded by now. Even if it is just a few tweaks for lack of GPS, slower data rate, etc.

+1. This was my first thought as well, considering the iPhone 2G and 3G have identical hardware, aside from things like GPS, 3G, non-recessed headphone jack, and plastic.

The least they could do is at least offer it for a $10 charge for the 2G if it's all about upgrade encouragement.

Boy Genius doesn't have a source. They regularly run their own speculation as "rumors".

This is a total fabrication.

Apple will not release an iPhone OS that doesn't support the original iphone.

The OS already has multitasking and multitouch everywhere.

It is not even good speculation.

But it does get people excited and generate page hits for that website.

I carry that belkin doohicky that swallows AA's. Four of them add about a half hour of real use. It's crapulent.

my friend has one of these and he says it works great. Energizer makes it.

What about the following:

- Full quality in the YouTube app on 3g cellular (remove the AT&T limit not valid in Europe)
- A common file system for sharing data between apps (or more apps that uses the Dropbox API)
- Indication of accumulated 3g cellular download in the status area in the top of the screen
- Fast on/off of 3g cellular
- Flash support...
- Go to end of long page in Safari

I don't see the difference between the iPhone and 3g as far as base hardware. Unless they just decided to cut it off?

It's more likely that the 3GS will have multitasking, because it has twice the ram at 256mb. Unless they did some magical reprogramming, apps will likely crash frequently on older devices.

I am so excited about an easier to use interface. I want some form of spaces, stacks, and category folders! Also love more gestures. Easy to change settings panel would be nice too. Like I've said before, I expect app switching similar to tab switching in mobile Safari. Call it a ripoff of the Palm Pre, but Apple technically made it first in Safari.

Did Apple even have a choice, I think not! I have been using the jailbreak proSwitcher app, and it really is a practical and necessary function.

I really hope these are true. I love my 3GS and use it all the time, but my friend just got an HTC Hero and there are some things about Android that are just better. I'm really hoping they improve the lock screen and let us add some sort of widgets, or at least more notifications (More than just the last text or push message).

I can live without multitasking on my phone, but there are a few situations in which it would be useful.

Also I have 11 pages of apps because as a developer I like to see what other devs are doing. So a better way to get to apps other than spotlight and flipping through all the pages would be nice.

I'm also hoping they release a beta version to developers on the 27th. That would be awesome.

All great, but they better offer a bigger and/or replaceable battery and stop relying on others to make some add on crap.

Know too many people that can't get thru 6hrs without charging.

They have different batteries I think.

wishes: 4.0 is lighter and quicker.

Like snow leopard saved disk space and seemed too boot & shutdown a lot faster than the previous OS

- The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will "put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers" more than any other phone to date. Everyone is "really excited."

rofl here we go again.
There's a lot of devices out there that already have some of the "new" features yet once apple pulls it out it all of a sudden makes it special to put them "ahead" in the smartphone market.

Man, what a bunch of tools with absolute zero objectivity.

The Motorola Motoroi coming to the US in March, has a 8MP camera that records video in 720p and an HDMI output to tv. Maybe we can see something close to that in iPhone G5?

If Apple were to really cut the 2G iPhone off for no reason, I'm sure someone will hack the iPhone OS 4 onto it. I will be interested to see if Apple pushes the 3GS a little further with it's extra power and especially what this will all mean for the next iPhone update.
