The Motorola Motoroi coming to the US in March, has a 8MP camera that records video in 720p and an HDMI output to tv. Maybe we can see something close to that in iPhone G5?

Iphone g5!? when did we skip a generation or two??

Sounds good to me...guess Palm will have to find a new angle other than "ours can do two things at once" after this comes out :)

And Verizon will have to go back to the drawing board on the whole "iDon't" campaign. Hey, they still have that crappy Droid hardware keyboard to fall back on. :D

I hope to god there is an Android-style notification shade/bar. The Notifications system in iPhone is a mess.

LOL, "USB debugging connected." ;)

Sidenote (and the question has been asked many times before): who are the tools who mark a story like this Negative? Steve Ballmer and staff?

my friend has one of these and he says it works great. Energizer makes it.

I used to use the mophie juice pack, and i tried the richard solo batteries. The problem is they invariably petered out while I was nowhere near a charger - at least with the AA's i can run into a giftshop and pick up more batteries and keep going.

My experience with that exact product was quite different. I had to return the first one to the factory because it kept disconnecting itself and wouldn't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes. The second one was the same. All in all a worthless product.

Also don't bother trying to talk on the phone if it's plugged into this either. It kills reception.

I keep a spare one of these plugged in in my glovebox instead for emergencies.

But the lack of multitasking was what made the iPhone so much better than all other phones!

I'd like to see some wireless syncing at least for contacts. (MobileMe free trial expired a long time ago  )

Well here's hoping the original iPhone (2.5G) is not left out in the cold with no updates as abandoned hardware -- it's still more than capable for a lot of things, and the iPhone 3G is NOT much different in HW specs compared to the first, so it seems like a really odd break-point! Why not at least support 4.0 on ALL devices, but limited features on some?!

If Apple were to really cut the 2G iPhone off for no reason, I'm sure someone will hack the iPhone OS 4 onto it. I will be interested to see if Apple pushes the 3GS a little further with it's extra power and especially what this will all mean for the next iPhone update.

You can't get extra power from a 600MHz processor. The other phones on the market are 800MHz to 1GHz, with the upcoming 1.5GHz right around the corner. I'm afraid your going to have to get a new iPhone.

The 3GS CPU is underclocked from 800 or 850, I forget. They certainly could open it up if they chose so, though I'd rule out that possibility.

I think the iPhone OS is a much more optimized OS than the other ones on the market so maybe Apple doesn't need the iPhone to use as much. I'm not sure though, maybe another poster can go into that in detail.

I don't think we'll ever get true multitasking on the iPhone. Things like process viewers are something that Jobs probably wants to avoid. What I could see "multitasking" mean is allowing developers to access certain background services, such as audio, video or gps which would let you, say, stream Pandora while you surf Safari or allow your GPS app to still get coordinates while you double check directions in maps or something. Those streams could continue until you switch back to the app to shut them off. I really can't see Apple doing a half-assed multasking, such as when Mac OS 9 said "you don't have enough memory to run this app... so quit other apps."

While I'm not thrilled if Apple is considering cutting support for the original iPhone (since I'm an owner myself), it's totally in line with what they've done previously. Even though with the identical hardware, they disabled MMS and stereo bluetooth on the 2G while keeping those features for the 3G and 3GS.

One of the reasons I've haven't upgraded my iPhone yet is 3G here is still mediocre. at&t finally rolled up 3G in my area in October... I feel sorry for the poor saps paying an extra $10/extra month for 3G and not even remotely have access to it. I may an excuse now but it would be nice if at&t had tiered plans... however that's a rant for another thread.

I've had good success with a Duracell unit I picked up at Target. This looks like the newer model of what I have:

EDIT: this one looks like the actual newer model of what I have:

I don't like the battery-in-case models. I prefer something external. And this Duracell is perfect for long flights or for juicing up my iPhone at the end of the day when I'm on the run and can't plug in. Bonus - it charges other USB-based devices as well.

Unless I am missing something...

From a technical standpoint, there is no reason 4.0 should be available for the 3G and not for the original iPhone. They have the same processor and RAM. And unless they reduce the amount of RAM that the OS uses, I also doubt that it will work on the 3G. It has a difficult enough time running third party apps if you have Safari or iPod loaded in the background.

However, from a bottom line standpoint, Apple might have decided that the original iPhone is no longer worth developing for because everyone should have upgraded by now. Even if it is just a few tweaks for lack of GPS, slower data rate, etc.

If I recall correctly, edge doesn't support simultaneous voice and data connections.

Perhaps anything streaming in the background might cause a failure of calls to connect (I remember a bunch of people theorizing that an ongoing data connection was the cause of some calls going straight to VM back in the day).

While I'm sure they could develop some sort of 'this app supports BG running on the original iphone, this doesn't' criteria, I'm sure it would be a mess. Additionally, if the stream from the cloud concept is legit, that would just choke the classic iPhone w/o a WiFi connection.

because you have to then fork the OS for a device with a declining user base. EDGE is a dead technology and the radio chip makers probably don't want to support the old chips either making it very hard for apple to patch issues. it's not like Apple engineers code everything. they have to get with engineers from all the hardware component companies to solve problems and issue patches.

what is the big deal about upgrading? 3G's are cheap today. it's not like a Mac from a few years ago that was priced insanely compared to a PC that you treasure for years. it's a cell phone you dump in the garbage after your contract expires and get a new one

You are correct. My wife was very unhappy every time she tried to call me from inside a store and I was sitting in the car browsing the Web. The calls would not come through.

EDIT: Problem solved with my 3GS.

How nice to have a phone that is deliberately crippled by the manufacture? You want more speed, buy the new iPhone 4G. Hey they just might throw in a camera flash. You never know.

It's nit crippled. It's destined to serve it's function within the constrains of battery and size.

If you want raw power carry a laptop or desktop around. If you want optimized functional then carry the iphone

Don't worry, if you still want to single task, you'll still be able to. Just close the app before opening another.

For those who want to, will be able to multitask, which a great many people do.

I know Apple touts battery life as a detriment to running background processes, but that choice of being able to multi-app with shorter battery life should be left to the user of the phone.

Considering many of us have access to wall outlets, car chargers, and portable battery chargers throughout the day, there's no reason to not at least feature multi-app ability.

The other thing I would love, is full screen "At a glance" while the phone is in lock mode. Being able to see how many texts, emails, calls or whatever came in while I was in the shower, on top of my girlfriend and so on, would be nice.

WIRELESS SYNCING with iTunes!!

ATT hotspots!! Let me use these wi-fi hotspots to tether my phone to my MBP!!! It saves you bandwidth ATT!!! Don't know if ATT changed to free usage 'cause I haven't been to one in a while. But if I could tether there, I would definitely use the spots.

Let me connect a BT keyboard for typing long emails while on the road. My Apple BT wireless keyboard is so small and portable, but I can't use it except with my MBP or PS3.

More options for double and triple clicking the HOME button. WiFi and BT on/off would be perfect here.

Landscape/portrait mode on/off modes. While laying down I get dizzy trying to orient the phone.

Haven't heard anything about customized MMS or SMS tones in a while. You know you want them!

Group texting/messaging!!

There's so much more that would be great but I love the phone as is. I would love it even more as "isn't yet".
