overexpectations

Y'all are asking for waaay too much from Apple, things that fundamentally go against its business plan:

a) to release an ALL-INCLUSIVE iphone from a hardware standpoint that only requires non-profitable software updates to get "the latest and greatest" future features.

b) to offer a discount OF ANY KIND...ON ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS...IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY of the freakin' company!!

Besides, how would that work anyway (forgive my ignorance)? If AT&T is **gasp** planning to offer a subsidy on the phone if purchased and activated through them who would ever be foolish enough to buy it directly from an Apple store at full retail price?? And again I'm sure there's an easy and obvious answer to this but the common sense of it all escapes me at the moment!

So, while all that fancy stuff listed in the patent filing sounds cool, in the end, come Monday, I think they'll do as they've always done --- release some half ass updated hardware then gradually keep strategically adding hardware features over a set period of time that forces you to buy a whole new freakin' phone each time! Classic Apple A$$hole-ology.

Thats How!

How do you hold it and sign at the same time?

I guess you either put it on a stand, or only sign out one letter at a time?

Yeah - we'd have it on a stand otherwise hold it with one hand and sign with the other hand. All the more reasons for everyone to become fluent signers. ;)

This is Huge!

This is Genius. Steve planned the releases out so perfectly, think about it. The original iPhone was so revolutionary that everyone had to have it, but some key features were left out. Now, a year later, even though the buzz from the last model is still in full swing, Apple will leap ahead of the competition and release the most amazing device, truly revolutionary. This IS the Future. GPS??! Video Conferencing?! phone, INTERNET, im, EVERYTHING!
and all on the most beautiful and elegantly easy to use phone GUI, blows competing OS's out of the water, even the new HTC with the multitouch is awkward, the iPhone is a truly revolutionary device, and Steve Jobs is not only a genius but a visionary.

Time to begin the Longest Four Days ever. i just ordered a new stereo for my car with the best iPod integration Alpine iDA-x100, and it's coming tomorrow, 10 minutes ago I was excited about that, but now forget that I think I'm actually physically incapable of waiting for this device!

I don't know, sounds like good business to me ...

I think I need to stay away from the rumor sites until monday. at first I just wanted 3g and GPS but now I keep seeing all these new rumors and think my expectations will be too high. Just hard to stay away .....

What makes people think that all this is free?

Apple is releasing an App Store.
Don't people think Apple will have some shiny new apps to SELL to everyone on Monday? Apps like Video Chat, GPS, Blogging, Spotlight, IM...

At $20 per pop, you do the math.
Also, to those that say that Apple just lumps everything into a patent to protect itself- it doesn't mean it is coming. Why, then, wasn't all this in the original iPhone patent from last year?

But how can they sell a video chat app? lol Every other phone with a front camera does it for free...

I doubt they'd actually sell those features as an app. But I'm sure they'd sell some other ones.

Will the iPhone be able to do all those things on Edge? In the picture it shows the E which makes me think that they could have put in video conferences in the current version of the iPhone.

The camera on the current iPhone is on the wrong side of the phone.

Well, the iPhone2's speaker must be greatly improved, because I could not image holding the current phone a foot a way from my face and hearing any call audio, let alone having a video conference.

big daddy j.o.b.s

I'm beginning to think Mr. Jobs personally guaranteed all of his engineers and marketing people -- and any other group within the company with intimate iPhone knowledge capable of ruining the excitement -- a $50,000 bonus at year's end provided there was zero "official" leakage before the actual v.2 launch on Monday.

And I'll be damned if that S.O.B didn't succeed! Unfreakin'believable. That's the only way he could have pulled this off. Well maybe not. I suppose he could have threatened to fire them and take away their stock options. Guess that would have been as equally effective...perhaps moreso!

woahh

just to put things in perspective these are all things that nokia and Sony already do, the challenge for apple is to do it better.

Where are the MacBook pro rumors??? I'm more interested in these.

I don't think all of this is going to show up on Monday. (would be cool if it did though) I know companies always file patents for stuff but we never see half of it.

Also, how much will the battery suffer if you've got 3G + wifi + video conferencing + GPS + whatever else? Didn't Jobs say battery life was a big priority (hence the exclusion of 3G for awhile)?

Why does everyone find this so hard to believe. Nokia and other companies have been doing this for ages and the batterey life is just fine on those handsets. I have great expectations! Hope i'm not let down.

Well I hope they already have this all planned out and redy to be shipped on launch.... if they are planning to be selling millions of new phones they will need to start producing then A.S.A.P. and if so..... I hope that pat is kind of old and has bin approved by the FCC.

Well I found a REALLY REALLY cool video! Kinda give us a look at what some people think the iPhone will look like.....

Amazing video!

True that - and realistic functionality - great potential ad for iPhone 2 - IN FOUR DAYS!!!!

Apparently, they've already arrived in containers and are ready to go!

either that or he has them locked up big brother style in some bunker underneath the mother ship!

I always find it hysterically funny that STEVE JOBS is always listed as an "INVENTOR" in these patent applications because, let's face it, his main job in the development of most things at Apple even going back to the 1970-80s Apple ][ WOZ days was to scream and yell at the REAL inventors to just get it absolutely perfectly right or else be FIRED! :D

Very well played Apple. If they offer an app frontend for posting on Wordpress blogs (kinda like that Live Writer for Windows) then I'll be so massively happy. Of course video conferencing and recording will also be great!

And I thought I was excited for the original iPhone :D this thing likes like everything I'll ever need in 1 single device. The first convergence device that I think might actually work.

Better late then never... Eventhough I understand where you are trying to get but its obvious that IPhone-2 will have to have most of these features if apple aims to captivate the world phone market and specially technically compitetive markets like Japan. Also any highend portable device priced in the $500+ bracket which the guess is the IPhone-2 will be will have to have these features. Because its apple they can still get away with it.... but I hope apple gets it right this time around.

I agree - those features are pretty much standard in the UK, that is MMS, Video Call, Decent Camera, Video recording.

...And top end phones have GPS too.

I'm still not convinced we'll see GPS - but I hope so. My money's waiting, Steve. And if it's subsidised and 18 month contract, I'll take 2!

The camera on the current iPhone is on the wrong side of the phone.

Or maybe that will be the last, big suprise....

"the original iPhone has this front camera, we just never told you about it. Update at the App store to activate " :D

Changing the Web

I think Steve's going to try to change the way we share information. The new .mac is going to be called "Me" (or some variation), and it's going to allow instant video blogging, photo blogging, text blogging to be posted to your "Me" site. You're going to be able to post instant clips of places you go, news happenings, and any photos you see. Sure it's been done before in some way, but Steve is going to figure a way to make it seamless and allow you to share it instantly with friends too through the mobile chat.

I think you are spot on. All this talk of .Mac getting rebranded to possibly Mobile Me got me thinking. Because if the iPhone did have video conferencing capabilities and say it used iChat as the app, then if you were at home logged into iChat on your home computer and also logged in on your iPhone under the same account, wouldn't that cause a possible problem? Hence you will need a "new" ichat account especially for your iPhone...explaning the need for the new >mac/Me/MobileMe service...perhaps?

Great....Agreed....Excited....but.......

Great....Agreed....Excited....but.......

All this stuff sounds delicious!! But, will this iPhone on Monday finally include Copy and Paste???
