Those specs aren’t that compelling

People who just want a smaller phone are going to have to settle for less than cutting edge specs. The iPhone SE is being made for a lower cost market.

I personally like the form factor and the design (still my favourite iPhone) but the screen is just too small for today’s internet and app design.

The SE is heading towards sub $300 pricing which would be ideal for developing nations. As a result of that race to shave off every penny, I doubt you’re ever going to see latest tech features like an edge to edge screen and Face ID.

I don’t care for the SE but the day high end iPhones (or any other high end Apple product) are made in India is the day I stop buying them without any hesitation.

Thank goodness this SE2 rumor is out. My iPhone X envy is completely gone. This rumor became a cure for my X lust.

What I like about these iPhone Special Editions is it takes all the best elements of previous models and packs it into smaller device with an entry-level price.

There are only two good compact phones available right now -

Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
Apple iPhone SE

I only use iOS as a secondary, so I might skip on this SE2 unless the price is too good and lower than the XZ1C's. Just waiting on the XZ1C price drop to under $400. I don't like glass backs or was ever a fan of the iPhone 6-8 design anyway. I will likely go XZ1C and then SE3/SE-X by 2020.

The March 2020 SE will be something worth getting in less than 2.5 years even if it came with a glass back. It takes the best elements of the X design and turns it into a bargain. If Apple based the X with 4.7" iPhone dimensions, I wouldn't be able to reach all four corners of the display.

I personally don't mind if Apple makes the SE line the thickest among all iPhones. Up to over 9 mm is fine. I want that hideous camera hump gone and for Apple to pack a bigger battery capacity. The SE has only a 300 mAh smaller capacity than the 4.7" iPhones but last as long as the Plus models.

SE line -
Best elements of previous iPhones
Best for one-handed use
Lowest price / best value
Long battery life (better than 4.7" iPhones)

I'm in. Staying with compact phones for life.

I am a subset of a subset probably. I have an SE and alternate using it with my 6S. But am finding more and more I prefer the size of the SE. 32G would be plenty of storage and the A10 would be more than enough power for what little I do. Keep the price low and I will buy one.

Don't expect it to be anything more than a minor spec bump to keep it current. It will still be $399 worth of iPhone.

If you want $999 technology, you need to buy iPhone X. You don't get that for $399.

Those of you that think that iPhone SE is "Apple keeping a 4" for people who like it" are wrong. It is all about having a $399 iPhone.

Had you spent a sh!tton of money for good headphones instead of a pointlessly expensive phone, you would have.

*edit* I got the joke with a delay due to internal beachballs
Heck, even cheap headphones a few years ago have skyrocketed in price. It's almost impossible to find a semi-decent pair for under $50 anymore.

All you're doing is staying with the worst iPhone in the lineup at any given time. You should acknowledge that, instead of deluding yourself into thinking it is something else.

I wonder if it'll look the same or if they'll switch to looking like a 6/6S/7/8.

It'll be a way of telling people who have a phone that looks like that that they're way behind the times and they need to upgrade to an X or they're lame.

Don't tell me you're one of those "my toys are cooler than your toys!" people. Seriously though, calling someone lame for their iPhone choice is... well, lame.

Would have expected the A11 (the current SE's A9 came when the 6s was the top do the line) - hopefully they don't go with a year behind CPU, beyond that it sounds good. Keep the design (and the headphone), bigger battery for even better life...it'll be awesome just like the current one.

I think they absolutely are. This would be the perfect successor to my wife's iPhone SE.

Edit: I just hope that they at least reduce the bezels a little bit. I'm not expecting a bezel-less phone like the iPhone X, but a little bit smaller black bars would be welcomed. :)

It’s literally just a single generation processor jump from the current SE (A9 —> A10). Everything else rumored is the same as the current SE (2GB, 32/128 storage, 12MP)

What if they don’t change the externals? You still going to pay another $400-500 to go from an A9 to an A10?

I would disagree with your description as "worst". The least amount of processing power or screen size yes but not the "worst" I might even go with least desirable but again, not the worst.
As I posted above, I like my SE and will be curious to see IF Apple is going to do an SE 2.

Perhaps the most unimaginative phone, but I wouldn't call it the worst. In design terms, a successful product is one that addresses a need, and at the time of its launch it struck a cord with the 4" screen crowd without even being a flagship. Granted, it misses a ton of features and the form factor is vomitworthy-old for a company that's design conscious and stashes the GDP of a small country in earnings, but it's solving a user problem rather well.

Speaking of "worst", I'd call the iPhone 8 that. It's a boring breakable flagship that offers no real benefits compared to the (previous stale flagship) 7 other than slow wireless charging (yawn).

And about the lineup: there are currently 8 (!) SKUs in the iPhone product category. That kind of redundant clutter is just like Apple under John Sculley, sans the bankruptcy fear.

Nice! I hope that's true.

The SE remains a great phone (save for the lack of waterproofing, etc.)

STILL powerful, still has 3 more years of support (presumably) which beats out any Android phone save for the Pixel 2, which is ties (despite costing multiple times more).

I've been hoping they keep going with a model they can get away with selling cheaper-plus it's easily the most powerful "smaller" phone, and there has to be a market for that. Heck, IMO it does feel better in the hand than my 6s did, though actually USING it I prefer as large a screen as possible-my 9.7" iPad is easier to type on than any iPhone, for example.

Apple should create an X look...same frame with a 5.1" screen ratio. Starting price should be closer to $499. Well worth it.

Sony & Apple are the only ones that offer compact phones.

^ I expect that design by March 2020. Apple needs to milk the 6-design a 5th time.

By the time we get X3 in 2019, everyone is complaining how boring the X design got no different than the complaints for the 7 last year.

SE3 = SEX!

Better specs than your current X ;)

Patience is a virtue. What's the point of ever buying a 4, 6, and X when better ones that are cheaper and more refined come along?

The quality of the SE compared to the 5 is horrible. It's like all the components were replaced with junk parts. The rattling, no chamfered edges, why does apple pinch pennies like this?
