I think it’s a missed opportunity using the iPhone 8 design instead of a revised iPhone 5 with bigger screen.
There is a genuine love for the iPhone 5 design and it would be seen more of “new product” than the iPhone 8. But Apple is probably using it to push margins and reuse left-over parts - not saying it’s a bad thing.
There are no “left-over parts”. Not how this works.

You could fit a 4.7” screen in a Iphone SE size if you get rid of the home button and add a notch.

They probably could but how much of that 4.7 inch screen would there be left once they add the notch? Looking at my iPhone 8 I don’t think I'd be happy with less screen real estate.

This new SE2 doesn’t excite me. I already have the 8 and really want something different next time after owning the 6, 6s, and now the 8.

I’m hoping the 5.4 rumor turns out to be true, and yes I know it will probably cost more. I need to baby step my way up to a larger screen.

I know many SE owners, including my wife. All of them are vivid SE fans and and NONE OF THEM bought it because of the low price. It was all about the form factor. If they wanted a cheap iPhone 8 they could just buy a pre-owned iPhone 7. My wife is on her second SE and she refuses to buy a larger phone regardless of the price. She wouldn't use an iPhone 11 even if she got it for free.

Apple should approach this the same way they created the 12" MacBook. Ask their hardware folks to come up with the best possible device with the best possible camera that can fit into the footprint of the original SE (ok can be slightly thicker perhaps). They could probably price it like any other top-of-the-line flagship product.
Seriously doubt they could cram anywhere from an A11 to A13 with a large enough battery to run it, an any way decent camera, water-proofing and force touch into a 5-sized enclosure. And to cut any of those features out of a phone released in 2020 would invite an avalanche of criticism and backlash. Just to please a few die hard small phone junkies.

I'll consider this if the camera is amazing. While I'd prefer a smaller phone like the SE, nobody is able to make one. This would be the closet thing there is to a flagship phone that's less than 5 inches.

Bang on! The worst part about 3D Touch (or Force Touch as it was called originally...LOL) is that was literally impossible to tell if it were there or not. It's the worst UX ever.

3D Touch and Force touch were not universal with each other. Force touch was specific for the Apple Watch, which basically can execute the same actions by invoking a firm press, Apple just changed the terminology for the iPhone to create a separation.

The 12 inch MacBook is dead. It was an overcompromised device.

I think they will call it iPhone 11c. Also, hoping it will have dual sim as the other new iPhones.

The iPhone 9
Released two years after the iPhone 10...alongside the iPhone 11....and the 11 Pro..........and the 11 Pro Max. Amazing. Confused. Simple. :apple:.

Back when they announced the iPhone 8/X, I wondered wether they would introduce the 9/11 the revision after...

It’s not a flagship though, it’s a $399 SE2* but it will have a great camera. Extremely likely there will only be a single rear camera, not two. I expect the camera from the 8 or the XR at best.

*By SE2 I mean that it’s rumored to be based on an older design model, updated with a current processor and other newer internals, released mid-cycle at $399. Not that it’s SE-sized.

At least they're learning that the SE was popular due to its size and not its price. I'd be less insulted if they called it an 8s or 9 (assuming it's actually better than the 8).
Apparently they have completely missed the size point as they are building it (according to Kuo..) in iPhone 8 size. That makes nada sense. they should build it in SE size and edge to edge - so a bigger screen in SE sized enclosure would be optimal.

Moving from the iPhone 4S (4.5" ?) to the iPhone 6 (4.7") felt like a huge jump, but it didn't take long to get used to it and after 5 1/2 yrs, I can say that for me, it was the perfect marriage of form (size) + function

(love my new XR and am pretty used to it now, but yeah, one-handed operation is a tad problematic)

So yeah, if Apple packs some credible updates under the hood of such a device and prices it right, it could be a huge hit.

No surprise they would wait until after Christmas to release the lower priced phones (not sarcastic, a good business decision). Especially since the common user most likely doesn't follow any rumors like we do. Still, I would really love a smaller 4" display or an SE sized iPhone with an edge to edge display. I really love the size of the SE and that is the ONLY reason I hold onto it...also I hope they return to square sides like the iPad Pro!

Stock price will take a hit on this one.

It's about time, though. $1100 cell phones are just ridiculous. I foolishly upgraded from an X to an Xr early and wasted a ton of money. Granted, there were certain accessories not offered for the X that were for the Xr that I consider important, but alas given the price point and price paid for both. I should have just stuck with the X.

Of course this comes with the hind sight of surviving 2 surgeries you thought would kill you and actually being back in the work force when a year ago, you were picking out caskets. But, what the hell.

But Apple isn’t learning!... Apple is just updating the iPhone 8 and calling it the SE. Apple is still refusing to release a true SE replacement.

It's not a dig, but anyone who is remotely tech literate can see the SE is several generations old.

A larger display is unequivocally better for consuming social media, video, and viewing photos.

It's like driving a sub-compact car. Sure, you might enjoy the small seats, analog controls, and lack of active safety features. But chances are, you're probably limited by income.

Some of us just want a small form factor smart phone. I don’t need a large screen because I don’t consume lots of video media on my phone; however, I do use it to stream music, plan my day, check e-mail, and countless other things which smart phones do without needing a large screen.

PS—I don’t think a phone needs to be a status symbol, so the cost of the phone is to me irrelevant. I need it to what I need it to do in the smallest form factor possible for the task(s).

A top end 5.4" would fit the bill for folks who want capability but small form factor. But not the market that wants a low budget phone that happens to be smaller due to cost. I think there's a market for both but not with a single device though.

Sorry, but a 5.4” phone is not a small form factor. It does not replace the current SE. It replaces the current iPhone 8.

A small dorm factor is no larger than the current SE; better yet would be going back to iPhone 4 dimensions.

I'm depressed..

All this waiting and the "SE2" we're getting is a spec bumped iPhone 8.

Bleh. No buyer here, that's for sure.
What? The original SE was a spec bumped iPhone 5s.

Makes sense for the SE2 to be a spec bumped iPhone 8.

What did you expect?

Japan Display has been the main supplier of LCD screens for all the LCD iPhones since the beginning. They're also in a lot of debt right now and have been bailed out partially by Apple infusing millions of dollars into the company.
I can't see LG providing the LCD displays for this new iPhone. Everything points to it having to come from Japan Display (not that we, the end user, care one bit).
Japanese taxpayers ought to care, their government having paid for the merger of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi's LCD business all of which have zero rents (economic profits) in the name of "jobs" only to have the new company lay workers off. The Chinese wanted to buy it out and loot it for any intellectual properties they can, only to realize there's no money to be made so they pulled out. Funny how corporate welfare works...

You don’t know how well the original SE sold and if it were that popular, it wouldn’t have gone 3 years without an update.
Maybe it’s because they were still selling it just a few months ago and they still work perfectly?

I notice zero difference in performance from my old XS to the new SE I bought this summer. It works perfectly.

not everyone plays games or does anything media related.

for phone calls, texts, podcasts and a few utility apps like banking or grocery rewards it’s simply perfection. And I’m sure it will continue to work just fine for the next 4 years too.

also have you heard of the Mac mini? Remind me how long that went without a refresh, but then sure enough it came.

There would be more screen left than if they had used the 4.5 inch screen currently in the SE. People that use the SE and love it, are ok with the current screen size of it. Make the screen even bigger and keeping the phone the same size is what I think all current fans of the SE would want.

But what is the PPI?!?

That’s such an important question?

Will Apple continue to cheap out and leave us with iPhone 4 pixels!!!

Or will it be the crystalline perfect still unmatched sharpness of the plus display?

The statement you made is so disingenuous it's nuts. The only similarities between the iPhone 4 and any modern LCD iPhone (besides plus models) is the PPI. Not the resolution, contrast, color profile (P3), brightness, dim level, or power efficiency. If the market decided that it wasn't enough, they wouldn't sell as many units as they do.

So do all the other iPhones they update annually...because it makes sense to do that.

It doesn't make sense to update the SE annually because it's a niche product. Mac Mini, same thing. No one said they will never update it, but all you guys clamoring for updates based on popularity and strong demand are demonstrably wrong.

There is some demand, but the market has spoken on what kind of phones they want...large screens. Hence, practically every phone out has a large screen and those are the ones updated annually.

Yeah that’s why I said ”closest to a flagship”. There is no other phone of that size on any platform as far as I know.

It’s rumored to have an A13, so if you want to put a number on it it’s the 11SE. 9SE makes it sound two years old at launch, and 3 years old when the 12 comes out six months later.

But like the SE, I don’t think they’re going to give it a model name that “ages”. I suppose SE2 is a possibility, but I think they’ll use something new. SR is my guess.
Finally someone who understands...
