I still think the new iPhone SE will become essentially the iPhone 13 mini, but with a larger power button to accommodate Touch ID (like the iPad Air 4) and a small "punch hole" on top to accommodate a front camera.

All I care about is its size. Hope they follow the 4.7 inch trend for SE devices.

Why do all phones have to be big? How about stop the release for main models mini version and instead keep small screen size on SE devices!

Also the push for SE 3 mainly seems to be because of this 5G. Otherwise a 4 year release schedule for SE series looked pretty good.

I thought the whole point of the SE was the smaller screen size? If this rumor is right, I guess it's more about reusing old designs/components until they run out?
I think it’s more about offering a cheaper option by taking a last generation design and updating some internal components. If this is the next SE it actually fits the pattern perfectly.
iPhone 5s + A9 chip and updated rear camera = iPhone SE (2016)
iPhone 8 + A13 chip - 3D Touch = iPhone SE (2020)
iPhone XR/11 + A15/5G + Touch ID - Face ID = iPhone SE (2022)??

Because based on the 12 and 13 series small phones don't sell as well. It also gives incentive to make people go for the more expensive mini model if they really want it.

I used a XR for a year; the LCD was absolutely fantastic !

The performance of the XR, on the other hand, absolutely sucked !

My 7+, from which I transitioned from, was far superior, performance-wise !

I don't care what size it is (I am still using the original SE) just hit a price point less than a MacBook Air or iMac.

It's hard to justify the $$ when it's $400 for old tech on the Apple side and most telecoms will basically hand you a semi decent Android for nothing. Yeah Andriod is a vastly inferior especially if you are all in on the Apple ecosystem, but losing one is enough to cause people to leave. This from an Apple supporter since the late 80s, including the LEAN years...

If the battery life is about equal to the 11, my wife may end up upgrading since she cannot stand faceID.

Come to think of it, I don't think anyone likes faceID, Apple really needs to trash it.

I hope this rumor flip-flop is wrong. The XR is way too big
If it has the same design as the XR/11, no way I am getting this phone. Way too big for my hands. I will have to give the 13 mini a try (despite Face ID not working with masks), and if I don’t like the experience, get the SE 2020 while it’s still on sale.
Same here. No way ill get an XR sized phone. If this rumor flip flop is true Ill consider a 13 mini but may just immediately get the current gen SE before it goes out of stock. I hope this rumor isn’t true.

I would rather they use the 11 design. I'm using it now and an SE 2020 with the 11 as my main phone. I can't use the OLEDs so what ever the next LCD is will probably be my last iPhone and I like the 11 best. But who knows what the heck they'll do.

Truly incredible.

I absolutely agree with you, Ian. Problem is, as you already know, Face ID in a world of masks.

I am testing a new alphanumeric passcode with a couple of words, because it will be harder to read by strangers each time I unlock the phone, harder than a numeric passcode. The problem comes with Apple Pay, I'm not sure you can approach the device to the payment device, initiate the transaction, then approach your phone near you to type in the passcode, and then put the smartphone again on the payment device. If I have to type the passcode just below the nose of the cashier and other people around, it is not safe by any means.
Out of curiosity, do you have an Apple Watch? If so, enable the Watch to unlock FaceID. I used it last year when masking was much more common (in my part of the country).

Make sense. The rumors of Apple keeping the iPhone 8 design makes no sense, as the battery will be too small for 5G.

The iPhone 8 design, used by the current iPhone SE, is larger than iPhone 12 / 13 mini.

I think leveraging older designs was always the point of the SE, not the screen size. The fact that the older designs had smaller screens was just the way it was. The SE was Apple's way of hitting a price point (~US$400) using the newest (or close to newest) Ax chip and upgraded components like cameras, etc.

Using the design of the Xr/11 is consistent with the previous SE designs. I am skeptical on the TouchID vs FaceID part of the rumor. Apple already has designs for the LCD screen in this size with FaceID already. Why make a whole new design (no matter how trivial) to implement the TouchID power button. Besides, the notch is a recognizable feature of iPhones and this will end up looking like any other Android phone.

We shall see.

EDIT - haha - Posters 51, 52, and 53 all read down to the bottom of the first page at the exact same time, practically. Don't know why, but I find that amusing.
If they go the Touch ID route (as it seems to be cheaper than Face ID based on iPads) I suspect they will still use the same LCD panel from the XR and 11 with a notch, with the notch still containing the speaker and front camera but removing the other Face ID components. Time will tell.

I don't understand how the TouchID sensor being built into a button on the iPhone makes sense, since almost every user puts a case on it. I think it's more likely that it'll have FaceID and share the XR chassis. By early/mid 2022, FaceID will be almost 5 years old, so is no longer really a premium/exclusive feature to the higher end devices.
How is the case an impediment? Just like with the ring/silent switch, the case can feature a cutout for the power button.

Would they really go all-screen with an SE first? Technological merits of Face ID over Touch ID notwithstanding, an all-screen phone would immediately look well advanced beyond the notched phones. Would Apple really let the budget model outshine the flagships?
Unless the iPhone 14s feature all-screen displays as well...
