No surprises here, I've been suggesting that the SE4 will really replace the iPhone14's price point for months :)

It's no surprise that Tim Crook will be OK with raising prices even on budget model items, even though those are meant for lower-income people. His corporate greed is insatiable.

The se was never meant for lower income people

It was meant to use up leftover parts

Two items here-
1- inflation hits everyone.
2- apple is a business.

iPhone 17 „Air“ will be the SE4. Mark my words!
I’m pretty sure that the so-called iPhone “Air” is just an euphemism to let the market know that something different is coming, but not necessarily an ultra-thin and lighter iPhone than the current ones as many people have literally understood it.

Remember that ultra-thin phones tend to bend, plus I don't think the market is expecting a much thinner iPhone these days.

So my bet is that “iPhone Air” is just a coded denomination to refer to a flip or foldable iPhone. I really hope I’m right.

Just time will tell….

Over $700 Canadian, which is too expensive for me. There will be much better deals out there by this summer.

The SE is no longer a budget phone at that price. It’s a flagship.

The new SE will be a slightly stripped down iPhone 14 with USB-C, in my opinion. And it will be priced accordingly.
How will it be stripped down? iPhone 14 had A15, 4 GB RAM, and two 12MP cameras. This is rumored to have A18, 8 GB RAM, and one 48MP camera.
iPhone 15 still is on sale with A16. It will be weird to have the SE with A18.
This is always how it has been. The original had the same A9 as the then-flagship iPhone 6s despite the year-old iPhone 6 having the A8 and costing more. Same when the SE 2 launched in 2020 with the A13 (cheaper than the year-old iPhone XR, which had an A12) and the SE 3 with A15 in 2022 (cheaper than the year-old iPhone 12, which was still being sold with an A14 at a higher price than the SE 3).

Of course, the SE remains on sale with the same specs and same price as the rest of the lineup gets refreshed, and former flagship models move down the lineup in price. So by the end of each SE generation, it no longer looks like the value it once did.
Price should never be a metric people use to judge a product. It should be product experience and frictionless integration with the most amazing ecosystem in tech.
but the other iPhones in Apple’s lineup offer that same experience with some other niceties, like Dynamic Island, pro motion (pro models), thunderbolt (pro models), more cameras, action button, camera control, etc. It would be hard to recommend the SE over those other models unless it comes at a significant discount from their prices.

Can be $449 or $499. Considering all the changes for the upcoming model, it is more likely that the price will be $499. Waiting to see the new SE. Wonder whether a product RED iPhone SE will be launched.

I can't imagine they'd release it with Qualcomms modem, either. You'll get Apples. Hope it doesn't suck like the previous ones

They should be appealing to all income levels if the goal is buying into services

All people are potential services customers
What they “should” and what they really do it is diferent. I agree the iPhone SE should be a reasonable specced iPhone under €500, but it was €539-749 in EU. And this new could be higher…
No way are they increasing RAM on an old SoC? Like the M2 MacBook Air?
A little hint for you: a MacBook Air is a notebook, not a cheap phone.
Yes, they should discontinue the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15.
The iPhone 14 has already been discontinued in several counties (EU). The iPhone 15 is planned to stay until September 2025 as usual.
Apple should've just used the iPhone mini's it would've been a A LOT cheaper n should wouldve sold
Sales data demonstrated iPhone Mini didn’t sell.

You are considering just the SoC. The SE will be stripped down because of camera setup, display and maybe sensor (touch id on the power button instead of FaceID ?). The iPhone 12 was superior in many ways to the iPhone SE 2022, even if the SoC was older.

We have to wait and see, regarding Apple’s modem. They have te resources to do well.

People always read headlines and love repeating this.

They were estimated to move 15M total units over 2 years! It was an unbelievable success when you compare units/year to something like the Pixel. It didn't take until Pixel 5 to sell more than that.

It's only a failure when compared to the staggering scale of larger screened iPhones.

Also, there's markets like Japan where they were bought heavily because that market prefers smaller phones.

They absolutely should bring the mini back, It's still got the most unbeatable hand feel out of all modern iPhones and I think as sizes keep increasing people are more aware of it now. They are a hot commodity on the used market and often sell out within hours.

You have to put it into context. An iPhone must be compared to iPhone sales, not Pixel. iPhone SE was selling way more than Mini anyway, so “for an iPhone”, the Mini weren’t selling well at all.

Weight and size are key differentiators with current models.

Interesting article on the decline of the mid priced smartphone market:

Smartphone market trends

The mid-price market is expected to decline from 35% to 23% by 2027, with a rise in the higher end share. This makes the SE an interesting phone - will it bring in enough new customers to warrant it sticking around long term, or will its sales disappoint? That Apple hasn't bothered updating it for a while leads me to believe sales are not strong enough to spend a lot on development perhaps Apple thinks enough new features and a larger form factor may make it an attractive option.

The mini is not going to get back for sure. Although a lot of people likes the mini, its sales numbers weren’t enough for Apple, thus they decided to discontinue it.

In the other hand and if this serves as relief to you (or probably not), It seems that Apple has in its plans the release of a flip iPhone precisely to fill the need of a small footprint phone while providing a large screen, I mean, with a flip iPhone Apple will satisfy 2 manifested needs of the common people, although this solution (the flip iPhone) doesn’t appeal to iPhone Mini enthusiasts fans.

Apple never disclosures sales per model, so it is quite difficult to say. We know SE sales were acceptable because we are seeing several iterations of the model (something that didn’t happen for the Mini), but which level is considered “acceptable” for Apple we don’t know. If they are renewing the model every 3 years, it probably means its target is people not willing to upgrade every year/other year.

USB-C is just a physical port. There's no reason why they would charge for that, unless they're also upgrading to usb3 speeds.
There's no reason (other than milking customers) that cellular connectivity costs more in an iPad pro than in an iPad air or that storage upgrades are that "cheap" in an Apple-TV compared to other products where they literally charge the weight of the modules in gold (probably not the same memory as in apple-TVs but still...) or that they were able to give us 16GB base memory for "free" when apple intelligence needed it (and the 8gb upgrade used to cost €200 just a day before) - and yet they do charge more.
