I'm under no obligation to not act like a rude madman when I go to the mall or drive my car that doesn't mean I do these crazy things.

All iPhones have dedicated GPS chips. I'm not sure I follow you.

It's insane more people don't realize how critical some of the sensors in devices are.

I remember when iDevices first came out with the gyroscope. Not to be confused with the accelerometer. Being able to develop for pitch and yaw is something I could never go without now.
Without data, the GPS shows nothing but a blank grid on the maps app. Not very useful.

Where that is known and basically expected to be the case, as with any advertising/marketing.

Go into any ACE true value store, Dino's, or whole foods in the US. You get what you pay for.

Use 'USA Nav free' or any app with locally stored maps. With GLONASS you pretty much have pinpoint accuracy without any data connection.

GLONASS is in all iPhones from the 4s and higher.

I little hyperbole in that post. People will make the decision with their wallets on what is acceptable or not as far as features in a device.

13 pages over a barometer on a 2nd tier handset. Sometime these boards are like some bizarre self-parody

Of course people will vote with their wallets.

<sigh>

Anyways with all the new 3DTouch enhancements coming to iOS10 things should prove interesting as far as returns go.

I don't know where you are from, but in the US the policy is 14 days. So:

1. someone buys an SE, and miraculously in 14 days comes to their senses and realized they bought a budget phone that is missing features. They exchange it for a flagship. Apple wins.

2. Same scenario but customer wants Apple and doesn't want to spend money, ultimately they keep the phone. Apple still wins.

3. Same scenario but phone gets exchanged for some budget android device the buyer ultimately doesn't like and repurchases the SE. Apple wins.

4. Same as above but buyer keeps android.

So Apple has it covered in 4/5 scenarios.

5. And by far the most likely imo. Someone buys the SE and never knows or cares about the "missing" sensor

I don't think I've heard anyone defend apple so much on a forum.
Do you work for them or something? You realize that your opinion is completely bias.
Anyways my opinion on the barometer isn't going to change and I took back the SE I bought last week. Many others at the apple store were making returns as well. I would check my loyalties IIWY.
[doublepost=1466173068][/doublepost]
You should see IGN. Almost five thousand comments on an article about Uncharted 4 being delayed by two weeks.

People want what they want. Apple couldn't stop consumer demand even if they wanted to.

So far I count more people in this thread with concerns about the absent barometer than there are people defending apple leaving it out.

The conversation is not about defending Apple; the conversation is about common sense. It's been suggested:
- because the barometer is missing the phone is unit for use by anybody
- government should step in and regulate the features in a phone
- by tallying responses on an anonymous Internet forum one can gauge sentiment of the worlds consumer base on this one issue

Hyperbole, generalizations and a lack of common sense are running prevalent.

You are pouting with this word hyperbole. Do you even know what it means?

- I don't even understand your first quote

- Government WILL and HAS stepped in before when they think MFR's are going to hurt consumers.
Take the Microsoft antitrust case for example. The ma bell breakup and the FCC on net neutrality.

- You can't gauge but you can certainly get a good idea of where things are headed.

I think you are right, headed in circles. So you think the government will step in because Apple chose not to implement a barometer and this is the equivalent of the ATT breakup? That's the very definition of hyperbole.

It's funny, just because someone thinks that something is not nearly as big of a deal as others are trying to make it out to be that means they are defending Apple and are the enemy basically. The much simpler reality of someone just pointing out that some people are needlessly going way overboard for something that isn't nearly as important as they are trying to make it out to be, well that's just a bit too realistic and therefore harder to face it would seem.

I think governments in general will start to have some very tough questions for apple very soon.

They might even be behind closed doors. A route apple probably would want to avoid given the climate.

Good summary of this thread. A fair amount of hand-wringing hysteria over nothing isn't uncommon on these forums, but this thread has really outdone itself. At this point I'm just checking in for the comedy value.

By the way: end of my second week with my SE, and I still have yet to encounter a situation in which I've been able to discern a difference in the way it operates as compared to my old has-a-barometer iPhone 6 (other than the SE being faster and reloading pages less).

Good for you!
Others here feel differently!

Perhaps you should take our words of caution more seriously.

What does that have to do with the topic though?

Agreed.

I think if anything a SE pro with 3D Touch and the missing barometer would be a slam dunk for sales for apple.
iOS 10 is going to be something :)

It has to do with where a lot of this thread went in relation to the topic, as well with what you posted, thus the reply to it.

A SE Pro/S now there is a good idea :D
I would imagine the gremlins would have to go back to the drawing board for the circuit board layout but the R&D would be worth it. Definitely big money there.

I keep hearing words like hyperbole in this thread, sometimes i think no one on this forum actually has any technical background or very little. But what do you expect with a domain like macrumors

I'd buy this in a heartbeat.
It definitely would require circuit layout changes for sure. If I recall correctly both the barometer sensor and force touch components are bigger than most of the smaller IC's.
I also wouldn't mind trading off some battery space as long as they keep it a true upgrade AND in line with the upward momentum.

When in doubt go with ad hominems.

I can understand why some may want it; it's a useful addition as is 3DT. However discussing it is one thing; there have been some good responses to the benefits, but Apple decided not to include it and there have been some off the wall reactions on this thread. Those who want it have to buy a flagship, nobody will swoop in and save Apple from itself; so to speak.

Well at-least s/you/s we can ALL admit apple needs some saving.

MOD NOTE

After 14 pages, it seems that this topic has been debated to death and this thread has turned into useless bickering.

CLOSED

EDIT: Thread reopened. Please stay on topic and treat other posters with respect.

Thanks HH
In the upcoming days i'm positive we can put more detailed substance about how the barometer anchors location services and saves battery life. It's also one of the reasons we fought so hard to get the Neo900 and upcoming Neo9000 sensorhub included. Just wanted to also mention using the barometer in such ways is nothing new. Google started the trend as far back as the some of the very first nexus devices.

on kind of a personal note: Hopefully if they decide to include a pressure sensor in the next iteration of the i5 formfactor that data will be open to us devs.
