Seriously? Refresh the SE with what hardware? iP7 chipsets? TouchID2?
That all would be nice, but isn't enough to refresh the SE imho. The SE is based on the 6S hardware and currently overpowered for its size. ForceTouch would imho require a redesign of the display assy.

Let's face the facts: You can get a SE for 380 bucks NEW. If you want to upgrade your old iPhone 4/5: Go for it. When Apple refreshes the SE with e.g. an iPhone 8 small this will cost at least 550 bucks. It will come without the 3,5mm port and probably without a flush camera. And it won't be available before October 2017. At least until then the SE is a great deal. Most likely even beyond the iPhone 8...

Honestly, not a big deal. A refreshed 4" device is nice, but at the same time, the SE will be relevant for 2 years or so. The A9 can blow by most processors. 2GB RAM is more than enough as well. 3D Touch is nice, but it's not going to break the iOS experience. Not to mention, the camera is pretty good as well. I recommend the SE to people who don't care about a big screen phone and prefer to have a fast device with no frills.

I'm curious as to the customer satisfaction numbers for the SE. Of all the people I know who own an SE, none of them are lukewarm about it... they are all absolutely thrilled.

Realistically speaking, it's kinda hard to nitpick on the SE besides no 3D Touch, smaller screen size with the same PPI as the 5S, smaller battery capacity, older Touch ID sensor, or a few caveats. For $350-$400 USD, you're getting a faster processor than any Snapdragon out on the market, a great 4K camera, no frill software, tons of updates and security updates, great app support, 2GB of RAM, a premium built phone, etc. If I didn't despise small phone sizes, I would've boughten a SE to use it because it sure as hell beats owning most Androids.

I love my SE. I wouldn't *mind* an upgrade, but it doesn't really need one.

It was an absurdly good value when it came out, priced at the low end but better specced than the mid range (iPhone 6). Now it's low end price with low end specs, but that's basically what I would've expected from the start. I still consider it one of the best values in all of apple's product lineup.

Now if they continue selling it as is in fall 2017, when iPhone 8 is the high end and iPhone 7 is mid range... Then we might have an issue.

Apple's great engineers and creative minds must hate being under the direction of Tim, Jony, Schiller, cue, federighi and these bunch of greedy, visionless, careless narcissists

Definitely not. The SE comes with 2GB RAM (which is a lot for iOS devices) and the A9 chip -which was the fastest chip until September. Even now, the A10 is "only" ~40% faster. When it comes to graphics the SE is probably on 1st place: Since the same GPU powers the 6S+ you can imagine that it easily handles the iPhone SE screen resolution. That said, I could imagine the SE will probably have better FPS than the iPhone 7+ in games.

Who even makes a flagship 4" nowdays! You guys seen to be stuck in the past! Smartphones are all about big glorious display nowdays. Miniature displays seem to attract minority.

Right ... cause phablets are the future?

Let me be more specific. The SE has the lowest end specs of any iPhone still for sale. Same processor, ram, and camera as the 6s but worse FaceTime camera, no 3D Touch, no barometer, no dual domain pixel screen, etc.

Compared to the broader smartphone market, neither the specs nor the price are low end. But both are at the lowest end of apple's current offerings. That's what I meant.

Hand pain?! Do you have a case that is lined with spikes or poison ivy? It's a fuggin phone not a piece of torture equipment. If you're in pain from holding a phone, you should go see a doctor.
yeah hand pain from stretching finger to a phone that is too large for my hand. Is that so difficult to understand? What a dumb comment.

It's the version of Touch ID (Touch ID 2?) that was introduced with the iPhone 6 (or 6s; I forget which). Same basic thing as the older version, but faster. I think the iPad Pros also have it.
TouchID 2 came out with the 6s. TouchID 1 came out on the iPhone 6, and was later also put into the iPhone SE.
There is reportedly a speed increase with Touch ID 2, but all I know is when I use Apple Pay with my iPhone SE, the transaction is complete before I even finish moving the phone up to the pay terminal. DING!

Didn't the 5S have Touch ID?

Mona Lisa is also "dated", so what? ;-) If you develop something close to perfection, there's not much to change. Of course, you can do changes for the sake of changes, or pretend to build "new stuff" by changing irrelevant details, or make a big change and go further from, rather than closer to, that perfection.

Why would I need a thinner phone? Should a phone bend / break if you sit on it in your pocket? Or you want to use it to cut cheese if you forget your knife? I prefer more battery life if the rest of electronics frees some space due to miniaturization. As far as ceramics is concerned, yeah, looks hipster enough, but it is also very practical in case you happen to drop the phone ;-)
Apple should have a four inch iPhone that is at least as thin as the thinnest iPhone 6/6s/7.

If you think SE is close to perfection, you are very misguided. ;-)

When you drop SE and all iPhones for that matter they break. Ceramic isn't hipster. Ceramic glass is actually used in iPhone 4/4s and parts of 5/5s/SE.

iPhone 6/6s/7 are too big. SE is a complete rehash of the past. iPhone 8 needs to come in three sizes: 4 inch, 4.7, and 5.5.

Get some consistency back in to that damn awful iPhone line up Apple is trying to sell but in reality is losing sales.

Ok, so what's the price of this phone then? $399 or $649?

Like I stated earlier, 89% of smartphones shipped in the last qtr were android. Now you are going to remove the most economical iPhone there is?

Maybe, seeing as Apple turned their backs on the lowest end of the price spectrum, With the ridiculous price increases and unasked for tool bar for the MBP.

The iPhone 7 sticks around, lower price. Or maybe they keep the SE around another year. The iPod touch hasn't been updated in years. It serves a niche and some people still buy it.

I bought the iPhone SE to replace a 2-year-old iPhone 5S .... the latter was dropping calls regularly (the carrier I use was better than the one before, who had terrible reception in my neighborhood), so I thought the SE would be an improvement.

Wrong. Not only are calls dropping more than regularly (the phone rings once or twice, then "Missed Call" appears) and voicemails appear one or two hours after they were sent. Is it the carrier? (I haven't changed carriers.) But at the best,. I get one or two bars for signal strength with the SE.

Turns out I'm not paranoid. Of all the smartphones out there, the 2016 SE has the worst antenna of them all.
