Well, if had my phone stolen in this way and had the information the OP has, I would have gone straight to the police. I would have asked that the phone be returned and charges places against thief. I would have also asked whether her Facebook friends could be charged for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, or even contributing to the delinquency of a minor. But that's just me - my middle name is 'hang-em-high'....

What a shameless thief!

The screenshot shows bookmarks for Brown University. Maybe she's applying to go there. Emailing a copy of the screenshot to Brown's admissions department might "help" her application.

EDIT: Also, respect to the OP for wanting to do the right thing by giving her the chance to right her wrongs without involving the police/ruining her life. Just don't get walked on, dude.
That's the OP's desktop and Safari. He took a screenshot.

If this had been me I would not have contacted her about the phone. Seriously. She STOLE his phone and TOLD PEOPLE ABOUT IT on Facebook. What I'm asking myself here: If it had been some scumbag dude would OP have contacted him?

It's like having your TV stolen and then seeing some guy carry it around the block and going up and asking him: "Hey can I have my TV back, please?" Come on.

Police. Get that girl arrested and your phone back. That'll teach her a lesson.

I'm on the OP's side here. I hope you get your phone back ok.

Email Jobs to see if you borrow the Apple Police to send after that bitch.

Whats the hold up here anyways? Call the cops.

This thread is starting to fail

OP have you given all of this information to the police yet? I know you said you were waiting on a response but it doesn't seem like she will cooperate. With everything you have been "given" if an arrest or return of your iPhone does not happen then this is an epic fail on your part. Anyone would be so lucky to have a thief hand over this much information and evidence. If you never get your phone back or nothing ever comes of this then you only have yourself and your inaction to blame. Good luck and I hope you get your iPhone back, and then some.

He said he did already.

Don't expect the cops to do much guys. The only reason they finally arrested that girl in the Sidekick story was because of all the media attn it got. It was in the NY Times ffs.

Hope I'm wrong, but usually the police can't be bothered with things like stolen wallets and phones. Even cars.

ETA: OP if you give me her last name I bet I can find her address. LOL. I'm good at stuff like that.

I seriously hope you go all the way and make an example of her.

1. She stole a phone, knew that was wrong - but then decided to brag about it to everyone publicly? If that isn't stupidity on the highest level, then I don't know what is.

2. You contacted her to return the phone, she ignored you and is clearly trying to not only avoid the whole issue but she obviously doesn't intend to return it.

As far as I am concerned, if you were decent enough to contact her and try to fix this privately and she ignored you - thats just asking for trouble. You can be sure she probably deleted the wall postings about the theft. Take her down and make an example of her. Even if you don't get the phone back at least you will be well compensated to get a new one.

Also an episode of Judge Judy will be the icing on the cake! Would love to see her dumbass in court with all the "LOL WUT YEAAH" coming out of her mouth. THE CASES ARE REAL!!! THE PEOPLE ARE REAL!!! THE RULINGS ARE FINAL!!! THIS IS JUDGE JUDY!!

I'd forward the story to a few tech blogs if you wanted the cops to do something about it. Media coverage helps a lot

1. You're foolish in contacting her. All that did was spook her and force her to throw your phone in a dumpster.

2. Even if you did print out all the FB conversations she had about it, there's no phone and no proof that particular phone was yours.

You should have laid low and let the cops move in on her without her knowing she was caught red handed.

No offense, but there really isn't much you can do. You're a smart fella (fellow Ivy leaguer ;)), you know that the police aren't going to waste their time running down people based on facebook transcripts.

What do you have going for you is/was the ridiculousness of the thief, and I do suggest trying to rally some public support. Submitting the info to engadget and such is a good idea - who knows, maybe a good samaritan in the Houston area will decide to be proactive and right some wrongs.

Best of luck but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Yep, I woulda set a nice bait and trap for her.

I called again today and gave them every bit of information I knew about the girl. The woman on the phone told me that a detective had been assigned to my case, and that I should hear from him/her within one to seven days. I've had stuff stolen from me before and the police weren't much help, but I'm hoping that they can do something this time. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Good luck hope you get it back.

You probably got added when she went to her Facebook page and the dumbass clicked on add friends from phonebook (contacts) if you check with some of your friends that were in your contacts they probably had friend requests from the idiot too.

This is easy.

Go visit the girl in person - with the press in tow.

Don't give an exclusive, but line-up at least one TV station to be there for sure, and give them "front of line" privileges. Send out invitations to the rest of the press.

And then one more special invitation - this one goes to the public relations contact for the local police department.

I would go to her house. Call their local police while you're on your way there and tell them she has stolen property and that you would like them there to help you reclaim it. Chances are very high you'd get some police help then.

The proof of purchase will show $199/$299 (unless they bought at reduced or non-commitment price) so that's what will probably be considered.

Here in NJ it goes by the MSRP value not what you paid when it comes to stolen items. The police like to make it the highest amount possible
