Talk to Steve Jobs on a regular basis do you? Can you show me a quote ANYWHERE where he said he required simultaneous voice & data? The marketing department simply found every possible advantage they could find for AT&T over Verizon and ran with it. It's that simple. And just becuase YOU require doesn't mean that I do.

And just because I'm requesting a phone I'm heavily invested in to be on a carrier that works better for me doesn't mean that I'm asking for Apple to stop carrying it with AT&T. AT&T works for you, then you should continue using AT&T. I'm not suggesting otherwise I'm not even bashing AT&T. So what's your issue?? Why are you being such a jerk?

Exactly! Why do these threads turn into heated arguments every time? Why is it a bad thing to have a cellphone on more then one carrier, its just about having more options on the table.

If someone is happy with AT&T then they stick with AT&T. If someone wants Verizon, then they can have Verizon. You don't loose anything by having the phone join up with a second carrier. Its like buying a car, you can choose between red, black, silver, white, etc...

This and many other threads prove that fan boys can become very dangerous when they don't think before they type...

We all love :apple: here, we are just asking for more options on the table. Back on topic, macrumors posted on their homepage an analysts view on the Verizon iphone (https://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/24/analyst-17-of-verizon-customers-waiting-for-iphone/) and that up to 17% of Verizon customers may be waiting for the iphone. If that is true then that agrees with my rough musings of a few days ago and hopefully this is what is actually going on and we will indeed soon see a Verizon iPhone. Im still one of the strongest skeptics out there, but this one piece of the puzzle doesn't add up and makes me think that it might be coming out.

If the next iphone is on Verizon...

...Do you think there will still be a version on AT&T, or will Apple totally dump AT&T? Will they provide phones for both Verizon & AT&T?

OK, though generally reluctant to weigh in on these Verizon/ATT/whatever carrier iPhone questions, some general observations.
First of all, my gf has Verizon. I have an iPhone which, in the US means I am on ATT.
There are times when we can be sitting within 6 inches of one another and I will get a signal and calls and she won't. There are other times when it is exactly the opposite of that.
ATT generally, GENERALLY works just fine for me. If it doesn't for you where you are or where you travel, then there is your answer about the network issue.
As for whether there will be a VZW or Sprint or whatever other carrier version of the iPhone, hard as I have tried to channel Steve, or discuss it with his barber or his barista, the reality is that we don't know for sure and won't till he pulls aside the curtain this summer, in September in December, in 2011, or sometime deeply into the future.
We can probably infer that, at some point in the future, there will be multiple carriers of the iPhone in the US simply because that seems to be the model Apple has moved to in other countries.
But who knows for sure? Only Steve and the inner circle.
But the reality is that Apple:apple: has a very closed corporate culture and the number of people who have actual answers to these questions is likely to be relatively small. And they aren't posting here...
Maybe there are 10 million iPhones that will work on the same network that VZW uses here in the US. Are they for this market or elsewhere?
We don't know.
But I look at this in the same way that I look at buying any new piece of equipment- if it has features that I want and I want to buy it, even though I know the NEXT generation will likely be better, faster, etc etc, if I want it now, I'll buy it.
If on balance you want an iPhone now, in the US at least, you are going to be on ATT. Maybe not next month or next year, but for now, there is your answer.
If you want to wait to see if it comes out on VZW, well, there are plenty of people who populate this site that have been waiting a LONG time! Take a number...
And I am reminded that when the iPad was about to be released, there was a LOT of chatter that it would be multi carrier. Some even looked at the color combinations of the iPad promotional materials and saw the Verizon red, the ATT blue and orange, etc and that "confirmed" it! :D
Sorry for the long post, but just trying to inject a bit of reality to the discussion.

No one is saying it is a bad thing to have the iPhone on more than one network. What irritates me is when people repeat rumors like it is the gospel truth about the iPhone coming to Verizon. The original post asks what should we believe?, right now, I don't believe any of the rumors.

It makes your posts difficult to read.

I would LOVE it if the Iphone also came out on Verizon. Tons of people flocking to Verizon just means AT&T will have to do something to compete, and even better, it'll mean a lot fewer people on AT&T!

It's annoying as the reader will probably laugh at how idiotic the poster is and at how (s)he posts every single sentence in a different line. It also retracts the readers attention and maybe you won't get an efficient response or answer to your querie(s). And by the way, -aggie- asked why you posted every sentence on a separate line, those were words :)

I like the way there are numerous carriers in the UK. It works seamlessly. I'm not entirely sure on what this CDMA stuff is but it sounds confusing.

Will Verizon really be any better/cheaper than ATT?

With all the jabber about Verizon I went into my local Verizon "showcase store" where they have phones, TVs, cable, etc. . .(kind of a gaudy Apple Store). Anyways, was looking at their phones and plans and they seem to as or more expensive than ATT. They have add-ons for things like visual voice mail $2.99/month, etc. I see people posting about legacy contracts ("I pay $5 a month for unlimited everything. . ".).

So I don't think it will be cheaper. Will service really be any better once a few million IPhones jump on their system?

Adam

It would be extremely close to the same. But for someone like me who is on a family plan it's much cheaper than me jumping to AT&T by myself. And the actual cellular service on Verizon is much better in my area. And with things like visual voicemail add on. I think apple will say it's mandatory and might make Verizon drop the small extra free...

But this is all if it comes out... Though I have a feeling we will see nothing at wwdc but will have a fall announcement and a holiday release.

IMHO

It'll be nice because if Verizon gets the iPhone it'll mean more competition. Competition usually means lower data/phone prices and more plans to try to sign more customers. Also, the # of people who would move to Verizon would make AT&T's towers a lot less congested. Win-win(-win?:))

Nobody said it would be cheaper, unless AT&T & Verizon actually compete by lowering prices, which historically I don't think they push each other....Sprint pushes them both.

For some people the service will be the same or worse. And for some the service will be better.

So for those of us that would benefit from improved service, it would be nice.

In Canada all of our major carriers have the iPhone and the competition is pretty much non-existent 95% of the time, so I wouldn't count on it. The plans are eerily similar for the most part.

Though I should mention that in Canada our carriers screw us any chance they get, but I figure it's the same in the USA.

However, there are already many other smart phones with data plans and usage plans, adding the Iphone to Verizon won't change the nature of competition with anything as the plans are already in use. Also, I doubt either carrier would do much to the actual price of the phone itself.
