Does the upgrade program apply only to those who have postpaid accounts? Or can T-mobile prepaid users join too?
There are conflicting reports. One chat with an Apple store rep said yes you can be a prepaid or MVNO customer, while the bare terms seem to say no.

My assumption is this...if you ordered the phone online and already paid full price...it's too late to sign up for the apple upgrade program.

If you clicked 'buy in store' and simply made a reservation to buy on the 25th, in which case you haven't ordered or paid for anything yet, I don't see why it would matter how you choose to purchase once you arrive. There is absolutely no reason why it would matter. All you have done is reserved a time and a phone, not made a purchase. The ONLY difference is the email you received to confirm your reservation has a different pricing structure. As no purchase has been made, I'm not concerned that they wont let me switch.

Considering this is some new big thing they're touting as the best way to buy an iPhone...they did a really horrible job advertising it to customers. It should have been much clearer and more prominent in the buying process for those who want to sign up.

So I'm currently on Cricket (but also interested in T-Mobile's $30 prepaid plan). Would I even be able to go the iPhone Upgrade Plan route? I don't see why not considering the phone is being financed through Apple (by Citizens One), but I'm still unsure if I'm going to be forced into setting up an account with one of the major 4 carriers. Kinda seems like it's tied to post paid, which is lame considering it has nothing to do with the carriers, as the phones come unlocked when purchased this way.

i am planning to get it on AT&T gophone sim card which i currently use in 5s.

Well I made a reservation through my Apple ID since my parents don't have one. My dad is the AT&T account holder. I'm gonna have him go in and just pick up the phone. Hope it works out

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but if you have to use a CC for payment, wouldn't you be paying interest on it from your CC, that is if you don't pay it in full each month? I heard they don't accept debit cards. Is that true?

We've heard mixed info. I bet a debit will be fine. They just need a method of payment for your monthly charge, just like your service provider does.

Does your debit card double as a credit card also, or is it limited to funds in your account? That may make a difference.

It's a Visa Debit card, but funds come directly out of the checking account

they have clearly said on FAQ pages that they dont accept debit card.

yes technically if you dont pay the amount you pay interest but if you pay the amount then you are good to go.

If it's a debit card linked to a visa account, then technically its not just a debit card, you can make charges on it exceeding available funds and it will be accepted.

yes but you have ask them about this.

Posted in the other Apple Upgrade program thread. My question that I still have is if you have to have an active upgrade available on your account. I ordered two 6s+ from AT&T with Next. I would much rather do the iPhone upgrade program. Do I have to cancel my two AT&T phones to restore my upgrade before I can purchase the phone from Apple?

Yes, but make sure the store has the ones you want in stock before you cancel ;)

Well I reserved two phones at the Apple store for the upgrade program when I noticed the delayed delivery time from AT&T. So, I guess I should be okay. I may just cancel with AT&T...

I don't see how upgrade status would matter. You're buying a phone from Apple that's not tied to any existing contract or upgrade requirements.

PIN debit and debit-as-Visa are different things. They could just mean they don't accept PIN debit because I don't think you can have recurring charges on PIN debit.

I figured as much, but I can't understand why the program requires a wireless account from the big four and for the account holder be present.

I don't really understand either...I'd guess the bank issuing the loans requires it as proof that the phone is being used as intended by the lien holder only. Technically they own the phone, not you.

If not, you could buy the phone through this program with no interest and nothing down, sell it at a profit, and have a 24 month interest free loan from them. Requiring the purchaser to activate it discourages that.

The carriers demanded their cut and Apple caved. Why I'm not sure, because in many cases the carrier has no right to demand a fee when the customer changes phones because the sim isn't locked to the phone. The carriers are going to make millions in imo fraudulent fees from gullible customers who don't know better. I don't have a direct account either (as many MVNO and reseller customers do) so we'll see what happens when I show up to buy.

Makes sense to use it as a deterrent. If you look at any of the promotional information, the email I received when I reserved, or the T&C page it says nothing about checking upgrade eligibility.
