Says credit card only on term and conditions page

Hmm, just got my new visa debit card( other one expired at the end of this month) and a I was reading in the card transactions section of the debit card agreement and disclosure statement:
3.1.3 Purchases/Authorizations: You can use your card to purchase goods and services from merchants honoring Visa. You may also use your Card to authorize others to place a hold on you Authorization Limit to assure future payment.

I pre-ordered through Apple.

I guess the problem would be the delay in getting an Apple Upgrade phone versus my ATT phone?

If there's any availability left at local stores, you can make a reservation at an Apple Store for the phone you want and then cancel your ATT NEXT preorder. That's exactly what I did.

Why would there be a delay? Once it's delivered to you just go to apple. I'd try contacting them now to find out if it's possible.

I'm pretty sure that because the phone will be activated when he receives it, it won't be possible to take it to an Apple Store, cancel the Next agreement, get a refund of taxes paid and then have that same phone transferred to Apple's program.

If your debit card says Debit on it I bet Apple won't use for the upgrade program.

From Apple's site:

  • Credit Card. To enroll in the iPhone Upgrade Program you will need a valid and eligible U.S.-issued personal credit card as designated for inclusion in the iPhone Upgrade Program. Debit, corporate, and prepaid cards are not accepted.

Agreed, but he seemed to be asking about Next. Or, I could have misunderstood.

I'm checking with AT&T now to determine if Next payoffs are instantaneous for making a new upgrade available.

No I was talking about iPhone upgrade program. So can I cancel the plan?

I'm pretty sure they are referring to debit-only cards. If you have a Visa/Mastercard logo on it, you should be fine.

I don't think you can cancel an installment plan, AT&T Next or Apple, keep the phone and expect to continue making monthly payments. What is it you're trying to do? Be more clear.

This is my concern as well since it's a "ATT" phone is my understanding.

I guess my only option is to pay off the phone early, own it, and then do the apple program next iPhone version.

I disagree. Even if it has the MC or Visa logo and says Debit I don't think it will work.

There are certain "debit" cards that don't have a credit card logo. I believe those are the ones with the problem. The ones with "Mastercard or Visa" on them are processed as credit cards. I think these should be ok.

Thankfully I have both if needed. But I do plan on using my debit card, first.

Frankly, I hope you are correct.

Any debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo can be run as debit or credit. As long as the logo is there, it should work. It's all the same in their system. I'd be VERY surprised if anyone was turned away from participating in the program because they only have a debit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo.

As do I, but I'm not going to assume that the debit card will work, simply because they could be processed as credit cards. But I surmise this:

We know that the Apple Update Program is 0% interest for the financing for the phone. We know that interest is not applicable to debit card transactions. However, IIRC (and I'll be happy to say I'm wrong if it can be corrected), running your debit card as a credit card does bring in some transaction as part of interest, or at least a certain amount goes to the credit card processor for that type of transaction. So while the funds may come from the same location, there might be applicable interest applied towards the transaction.

One may want to read up on the terms/conditions of your ATM/Debit/Check card for the details on that.

Luckily, the two cards I opened up in the past 2 months are 0% interest for 24 months, so either way, I'm covered.

Okay let me write it all over again.

I have reserved an iPhone on iPhone upgrade program. I see it has to be activated on the big four carriers. So can I open up an account with any of the big four carrier, activate the phone, bring the phone home, insert my other SIM card and cancel the account with the carrier and keep paying Apple the monthly fee for iPhone upgrade program? Does this make sense?

Makes sense. And the way it's being advertised it should work. I don't think you'll know until you do it though.

Let me ask this: Is it safe to assume that your carrier isn't one of the big four? And no, I don't mean Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, or Megadeth. :p

Lol my carrier is At&t but my wife uses prepaid so I am keeping all my options open. If they let me activate the new iPhone on her prepaid well and good. Otherwise I will use my postpaid line(which is on my brothers account) I hope I will not be charged extra as I will be activating the phone and giving it to her. And third option is get a new line there and then.

Got it. With more context, now we understand your question.

What I would suggest doing is getting the phone on the upgrade program, add a line to your existing account, wait a day or two, drop the line, then swap the sims. That should get you what you're looking for. You'll get prorated for the day or two that the line was active, but after that, you should be in the clear.

As long as you do this through the Upgrade program and not through NEXT, you should be okay.

Feel free to disagree, but at this point none of us know for sure. Asking the Apple reps is pointless since they are pretty much clueless as to what is going to happen on launch day. We will have to wait and see.

I'm sorry for asking questions that I know have been asked before. I am violating a rule that I always try to abide by (search first), but I don't have time right now.

1. Does my reservation basically guarantee that the model I chose will be there for me when I arrive? Or am I still leaving it up to chance?

2. What exactly does "approval" mean? I get the credit check but what other approval do you have to go through? (I have AT&T)

3. Cancelling a full price pre-order shouldn't affect my eligibility in any way right?

Thank you!
