1. Yes it guarantees that the model you reserved will be available.

2. I assume approval just means a credit check. I don't think will be a loan that's difficult to be approved for.

3. It shouldn't affect your eligibility at all. In fact, I also canceled my preorder in favor of getting my phone via reservation at the Apple Store on launch day.

Thanks a bunch. Awesome man!

Got it. With more context, now we understand your question.

What I would suggest doing is getting the phone on the upgrade program, add a line to your existing account, wait a day or two, drop the line, then swap the sims. That should get you what you're looking for. You'll get prorated for the day or two that the line was active, but after that, you should be in the clear.

As long as you do this through the Upgrade program and not through NEXT, you should be okay.

BL.

Yeah. Not going to Next this time. Sticking to iPhone upgrade program. Thanks

So can I open up an account with any of the big four carrier, activate the phone, bring the phone home, insert my other SIM card and cancel the account with the carrier and keep paying Apple the monthly fee for iPhone upgrade program? Does this make sense?
Yes you can do that but presumably you'd be out a substantial activation fee plus a credit check plus whatever of the first month's fee you can't recover.

On the 25 do the Iphone upgrade on your line. They'll probably take your old sim from your phone, as long as it a nano sim, and put it in the new phone. Go home take your sim back out of the phone and put back in your old phone and give the Iphone to your wife. done. No activation charges.

You don't trade in your current one. However when you get the 6S/6S+ using the iPhone UP, you trade that one in when you use the iPhone UP for the 7/7+

You don't have to trade in your current phone as you are paying full price for the new phone (over 24 months). Everyone is so eager to give up their phones. Your contract should not have any effect on doing the upgrade program through Apple.
If you want to order your new phone from Verizon then they may have options where you can trade in your existing phone depending on what type of plan you are on.

Exactly. Many seem to be confused by this. If you want to own 2 phones you can have 2 phones.

One important thing: do not port your wife's number to the second line!! That would definitely complicate things, so when you activate this second line, make sure it is a different number than your wife's or yours. Then when it's canceled, your wife's number would still be active with your prepaid carrier.

I'm just curious on how much our how strong will credit affect picking up the phone and financing it through the upgrade program. I'm in the process of building my credit back up so it's not in the greatest state right now. Anyone have a speculation?

I don't think it would be too strenuous. Have you had any big ticket items that you are making the positive effort to pay off? Car payment, house payment, or similar? If it is something where you're showing a good positive effort, I would think it should be okay, let alone at least indicating that you have the money to make payments. Other than that, we won't know until the 25th.

From what I understand activation is tied with the POS sale of the phone, when the new device is scanned to be sold the register will force a carrier touch.

In my experience that does not simply mean a 'SIM-swap' nor does Apple really have the capability to discern different carriers requirements. They use a computer program that takes the user's account information and pings the carrier's APIs in order to either allow or disallow the purchase.

This means opportunities for activation fees PLUS a possible contract sign-up/extension (most carrier's systems auto trigger this at some stage). They will be taking your SS number, address, etc for a full carrier 'touch' and acknowledgement of a new phone (so that corresponding fees for 6s can trigger on their side as well). I also hear this precludes work/corporate accounts and prepaid accounts.

I'll still be there on the 25th but there is no way I am chancing a new contract. I'm keeping my pre-order and going to decide at the store. It would be nice to return a unopened 128 GB 6s and use it as credit towards the first payment of the upgrade plan. :p

Yes. I would certainly make sure of this. Waiting for 25th now. Thanks

I know some people here stated that in order for you to qualify you only need about 3 months worth on payments on your credit card, but I just came across this link. Explains in a little more detail how apple works with Citizens one. It seems like there is a credit check and it is based on your credit history. But then again, this is not specific to the apple upgrade program.

Can you no longer order a 'regular' account upgrade (with 2 year commitment) for At&t on the Apple site...?

If that means a hard pull then I'll probably stick with T-Mobile Jump Program then.

That's my plan. I didn't pre order so I'm going to try my luck at T mobile stores on the 25th. Worst case I have my appt set for 11am for a reservation for the 6S Plus at my local Apple store.

If it's a hard pull and the decision is based on credit score I'll likely have to go the AT&T Next route.
I don't understand why some of you are so freaked out about having your credit checked. A single credit check will not significantly affect your credit score. It may go down 5 points or so temporarily. Unless you have had credit checks run several times recently, I wouldn't think it would be worth worrying about.

I'm not "freaked out" out having my credit checked. I'm merely stating that I'm not sure my credit/score will pass muster and I will have to go with AT&T Next instead of the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program.

OK, sorry about the "freaked out" comment. I just had a recent discussion with a few on reddit.com in a thread about the upgrade program where some were definitely "freaked out", thinking that it would torpedo their home loan they were in the process of getting if they had a credit check done or sink their credit score. I would think if your score is above 620 and especially if it's closer to 680, you should be ok.
