Not sure if this was discussed earlier. But I have 2 reservations, and they both show up as regular price. I was freaking out because I want to do the Apple Upgrade Program. I was at the mall last night and asked a few of the different Apple workers. They told me it would not be a problem.
Once you pick it up, you can tell them you want the upgrade program. I have the same situation. No worries

I think it's become clear by now that the AUP is simply another option for those buying in-store (not those who paid full price online and chose to pick up in-store). I'm guessing they had two options for reserving (full price and AUP) on the website to try and streamline the process, so the clerk has some idea about what the customer might want. But we'll all have the full range of options (buy full price, AUP, or 24 month financing) when we come to claim the phone.

What I'm hoping to do is simply put the SIM from my current phone into my new phone. There shouldn't be an activation charge for that, as far as I understand it.

i inquired about this from AT&T and they said you will not be charged for activating the new device just by putting in the sims.

and i talked to apple rep as well. he said the phones are unlocked and most probably will not be having any sims.

That doesn't sound right to me. How can you switch carriers if the phone doesn't have a SIM included? I think the phones will be unlocked but will come with a SIM for the carrier you specified, but that doesn't mean you have to use the included SIM.

yeah may be. he was just saying with the reference that unlocked phones doesnt come with the sims. so according to him you have to use your own sim.

I think Apple would have let people know about that, because I think a lot of people will be switching carriers now that their phone purchases are decoupled from their cell service.

Unless Apple has stacks and stacks of unactivated SIMs from each carrier at all their stores, but that all seems very un-Apple to me.

Any clue how this will all work next year? Will we need to do an in store reservation again and show up? Or will we be able to buy it online and then mail in our old phone?

I assume we'll still need to go to the store. Just hoping to avoid stores again.

If ordering using the Apple Upgrade Program, will Verizon still charge the $40 upgrade fee to a current customer out of contract? I would think not since it should be considered bringing my own device, right? Just trying to manage expectations and I've not seen a definitive answer on this.

They told me they would when I asked on Saturday. But I've gotten conflicting information from their reps before. If there's a way to get around that, I'd love to know!

I keep hearing conflicting things about whether or not you can qualify for the program if you are in the middle of a contract with Verizon. It shouldn't matter but it seems like you can't.

That complicates the equation if u are paying full taxes on a $659-949 item that's spread over 24 months payment.

So u turn phone in in 12 months. And "rebuy " for 24 more months. U get hit with the same full taxes on the $649-949 phone again.

With normal car leases (with option to buy after lease). With exception of Maryland , Texas and Illinois (not many other states). U are only responsible for lease monthly tax payments.

This could end up being the catch with this program. Here in AZ, sales tax is 9.3%. On an $850-950 phone and $129 apple care, that's an extra $90-100. If I turn in the phone after 12 months, do I get 50% of that tax money refunded? As you state, doing this annually would cost you an extra $50 per year.

I'm doing this program this time regardless, but I may go back to buying phones outright if there's a loophole for Apple to double dip on sales taxes.

Just to clarify...

If you're only one year into an AT&T contract (bought the iPhone 6 last September), can you still purchase the iPhone 6s through the Apple Upgrade Program?

I think I jumped the gun and paid my early termination fee so that I'm no longer under contract, which sounds like I may have wasted $200 if you can get on the Apple Upgrade Program while still under contract with AT&T.

i will try my wife's prepaid plan if it works well and good. Otherwise i am going to use my AT&T next line!

Apple isn't double dipping it's your government. There is no difference in tax treatment here, Apple Upgrade is being treated the same as a cash purchase.

Yes you can! Purchasing the phone via the Apple Upgrade is completely separate from your carrier. Being under contract or no eligible line is irrelevant!

So many people are so caught up on how the Upgrade Program is costlier than buying a new phone each year and selling the old one on sites like eBay. For me, that misses the point. The phone I want costs about $900 (including tax). Apple is charging me about $500 to use it for a year. If I were to go the route of selling my old phone every year, I doubt I'd clear more than $500 after fees and what not. Not saying you can't do better, but I feel $500 is on average a generous estimate for a 1 year old used phone. So that means it cost me $400 for the year for the phone, which is $100 less. So in essence, I'm paying approximately $100 extra per year to use Apple's program (using generous estimates on phone resale value).

So, what do I get for my extra $100? First, AppleCare. That's nice to have and to know that breaking my phone won't mean I need to pay full price for another, or an exuberant repair fee. Second, I get convenience. I don't have to go through the process every year of selling my phone. The process from creating the initial listing to getting feedback is often several weeks. And I often find it hard to coordinate selling my old phone with getting the new one, with the goal being to avoid being without a phone. The best time to sell your phone to maximize profit is before the keynote and everyone begins selling phones, but you often have to wait several weeks to sell until the new phone is out. Third, you get a safe reliable way to upgrade every single year. There's zero hassle. When the new phone comes out, I simply go into an Apple Store and get it. Plain and simple.

For me, if all of that only costs me $100 a year extra, it's 100% worth it. Of course it's more expensive. But it has advantages. And I think the gap in price will only narrow as this slowly chips away at iPhone resale value, which won't remain this high forever. The $100 difference (max) is worth it to me for what I get. I know some will say that we all can't be so free with our money - and to that I would say, if that amount of extra money is too much for you, then maybe you should be spending your money on things other than a new cell phone every year. For some people, there are intangible things that matter outside of the raw dollars that it costs.

It doesn't change the fact that if this process is as written, you'll be paying double the tax. I see what you're saying in the sense that it's treated as a cash purchase, much like buying a new phone outright each year and then selling it after 12 months, buying a new one and so on, but without the ability to recoup some of that value in the resell market, it's less attractive if you end up paying 2 years worth of taxes on something you trade in every year.

I think this post sums it up. I can already feel the relief of being able to jump on Apple's website come pre-order time for the 7, reserving a slot at my local store, and just taking my phone in to trade.

Just wondering if anyone has read or heard what kind of condition the phone has to be in when turned in after the one year. I assume some reasonable wear is okay?

Probably store to return the phone

So, has any one been able to reserve a time slot in the last couple days, In my location it just is showing 16gb 6s, not even the 6s+ or any other size or color except silver and grey.

Is it still a good idea to check the website late night or early morning to see if they have new inventory?

It certainly can't hurt to keep an eye out but at this point I would imagine they are busy just trying to get all the launch day units built and shipped. Probably be a better gauge next week once they get closer to shipping launch day commitments.

It's probably because all the 6S plus is out of stock and no longer appears. I just checked my apple store this morning and appears that you can only reserve the 6S and not 6S Plus and probably for the reason that they don't have any stock anymore for the launch day.

It doesn't hurt to try and keep checking. From other website, I heard that Apple will be having 2 lines again. For those who made a reservation (I assume it's the reservation line for both who already paid at check out for pick up or reserved for pick up for those who reserved through iPhone UP link?), and the other line will be for those who didn't pre-order or missed the boat and wants to get one in their hand. You then have the option to reserve one if they have the one you want in stock.

While this is true, you will not be able to trade in your ATT NEXT phone and will you are still on the hook to pay off the remainder of your ATT NEXT commitment. So, you can have a second phone (with installment plan) through the Apply Upgrade Program, but you cannot replace your ATT NEXT installment contract with the Apple Upgrade Program.
