Verizon definitely does not charge you simply for throwing your old SIM in a new device. It's when you activate a new SIM with them that you get charged, even if that new SIM is on an existing line.

sorry i didnt know about this that they have stated. Can you please give me a link for that? Thanks

http://www.theverge.com/2015/7/21/9011255/att-raising-activation-fees-august-1

"Starting on (August) 1st, AT&T will charge all new Next customers a $15 activation fee whenever they get a new phone. That same $15 rate applies if you bring your own smartphone compatible with AT&T's network and start a new, contract-free line of service with the carrier. In a statement to The Verge, the company was quick to note that existing Next customers — and those who sign up before August 1st — won't be subject to the fees "at this time."

Let me remove the confusion for everyone. Forget about what the reps have told you. AT&T Reps are the dumbest in the industry.

New AT&T Customers = $15 Fee
AT&T customers who upgrade to Next or purchase a new Next plan = $15

BYOD for existing AT&T customer = $0
Existing AT&T customers purchasing via Apple’s upgrade promo (aka BYOD) = $0

Next is a program provided by AT&T
Apple’s upgrade program is provided by Apple.

Showing my ignorance again. How does one replace a SIM on a Verizon phone? And if I'm looking to sell that phone, is it then...SIMless?

edited: my understanding was that Verizon phones (which my 5 is) don't have SIM cards.

Apparently Apple has been putting that message on orders, even if you don't owe the fee. Just watch your next couple of AT&T bills and make sure you don't get charged.

If that's true, I don't think it was Apple's mistake - the fee message was clearly being fed from the AT&T side.

Well, I think they are quoting script on upgrades through AT&T. I would very specifically say you are using Apple's Upgrade Program and financing is through them, there is no subsidy through AT&T. They are not processing anything. Everything happens on Apple's side. I honestly think this is the problem, the reps don't understand Apple's Upgrade Program and may not even know what it is. Poor training, unfortunately.

Right but they are also saying this to people who aren't using the Upgrade Program.

I don't why you guys keep asking these online tech support people that have no clue, when AT&T has already stated their new policy in simple terms...current lines will not pay upgrade fees with NEXT or BYOD.

Where have they stated this?

First, that's not AT&T stating anything. That's The Verge writing an article.

This only pertains to customers on "Next" plans and/or ordering new lines of service. What I was talking about is that the fee is apparently being charged to customers who buy a 6S outright to use on an existing line. So in cases where there's no subsidy, no new SIM, no new line, nothing - AT&T (apparently) believes it is entitled to $15. That's something new.

Agree. I sold my iphone 6 plus august 20th. Went to att store to get micro sim so I can use my spare lg g3 for the next month. No bogus $15 charge.

People just getting confused with this $15 charge. Its for next customers.

However one thing that needs to be clarified is new line of activation. Usually it's been $40 to start a new line. When att had next promo. They said they would waived new line next activations. We are talking brand new lines. But that was only with promo. Or else people would start and cancel lines at will.

Are you a new or existing customer? AT&T has made it very clear...new customers will pay a $15 activation fee regardless of where the device is purchased....existing customers will not.

EDIT: Just read your further post. So you wont be charged. Good.

This guy's right we do charge $15 for next or BYOD upgrades/activations....

If it's a next upgrade and you have an existing or have had a next on your line then we won't charge the $15 fee (for now). It's determined on a per line bases.

So if you activate a new line on next or byod then it will be subject to new rules regardless of the status of other lines on same account. ie... new fees

It's $45 for 2 year upgrade or activations.

So if I'm reading this right..

If I use the AUP to get 2 iPhones and they are treated as BYOD to two already existing ATT lines, I should be charged $30, correct?

How can you guys be charged an upgrade fee from A$&$ when you are purchasing this from apple and it’s being financed by apple? This program has nothing to do with the carrier.
AT&T still has to do work when you buy a new phone - change the EIN associated with number, change the billing to new phone etc. Not saying it is worth (although $15 isn't bad) but even when you buy phone elsewhere they do have to do work. And they do lose profit on the phone sale.

If they do charge for BYOD activations, the loophole might be using your old SIM card (which means nothing is activated)

They don't have to change anything with billing. I don't know what EIN stands for in this context. ICCIDs, IMEIs, etc would all be automate.d

Depending.. doesn't the 5 and newer use a microSIM? If so, that kills anyone coming up from something older (read: 4S).
