I kept mine since I first opened this thread and call me crazy but.. if I tune it to max volume ever so often is there. I just use the phone with the volume 3 blocks b4 max and im okay with it. Im happy when I first started the thread that I wasn't;t the only one. I know it is not acceptable that we all dropped a good amount of money for this device..

After Apple Care sent me a replacement in the mail which arrived scratched on the screen and I immediately returned to them without setting up—therefore I couldn’t test the actual speaker, I returned my original phone to Verizon and called it a day.

The associate on the phone stated I should give it another try and convinced me to order a whole new one via a whole new order which they bumped to make available ASAP.

The third iPhone 10 arrived yesterday.

The speaker is acting the same and this one has tons of dust under the camera lens.

Being that 3 IMEIs failed on my Verizon account and they now need to credit back 3 activation fees due to defective units, it was flagged as an escalation to the manufacturer. VZW got in touch with Apple on the call I placed today to tell CS I was returning this one too—I was out on hold for nearly half an hour when they spoke to whatever rep they have at Apple that handles tech-support for Verizon during escalations. Apple *finally* stated that they have had reports of speaker issues on the 10 and that they are unsure as to where the problem comes from. As far as my finding dust under the camera lens, they explained that it is found on phones that have failed QC at the factory due to the OLED panel glitching during testing prior to packaging.

The phones in question were reopened to service or replace the screen panel altogether and therefore could at times have been exposed to dust—hence we can find some under the sapphire cover for the camera modules on certain handsets.

I am at a complete loss for words.

Half-baked product rushed into production to make up the 10th anniversary deadline and avoid having the 8’s 4-year old design the only thing to present to their customers.

This is beyond unacceptable.

Excuse my plebby ears but what exactly does the crackle sound like? Are we talking crackling like a distorted phonograph or more like a Rice Krispies kind of snap, crackle, and pop?

It sounds like somethings rattling in the speaker

Yeah, I wish I didn't sell my perfect iPhone 7 Plus to be honest.. Ugh

I'm hoping this is ironed out and i'll get a warranty replacement later on

That's why I never sell old device until I am 100% satisfied and the return date has passed.

my iphone x the same problem. I've tried 4 iphone x at the apple store in italy and everyone has the same sound. I think it's a problem for everyone.

I'm finding I'm not hearing any issues with music or youtube, but mostly with phone calls/facetime when using loudspeaker. Even calling my voicemail service I can hear the issue.

It seems like a vibration/resonance/buzz in the housing maybe? It's really hard to tell.

Anyway, I have a genius appointment booked for a few days from now. We'll see what happens.

2 phones in a row had same problem. Lets see what apple does for this. Hope they can tweak eq or volume to fix this.

i don't really use the external speakers and even if i use them i wouldn't turn up to max volume

hi Everyone, Just got my iPhone X today and soon enough i found myself googling for 'apple iphone x voice issues' and i found this thread.
I too hear this crackling sound from the speakers near the earpiece when i listen to audio or having a call over speakerphone and the volume is around 80-100 pc. I have updated to the latest version of iOS 11.1.2 but the issue is still there.

The song that i sampled was "Can we make it work" by "The Mountains". I tried listening to this song from two apps, Amazon Music and Youtube. I compared the sound with my iPhone 6s Plus on the same apps. The crackling noise is there. The first few seconds of the songs, and you'll hear it.

Contacted Apple support over chat. The first advisor asked me to perform normal stuff, such as playing the song with the bluetooth radio on and then off. Listening through headphones and such. Then he transferred me to a senior advisor.

She asked me to press both volume up and down button and the sleep/wake button for about half a second which made the phone to vibrate a bit. She said the phone is now in sysdiagnose mode. She told me to wait for ten minutes and then connect my iphone to a computer with iTunes so as to sync the phone and then send the log files over to apple, which i sent(via the link they sent me on my apple id, approx 130 MB zip).

At the end i told her that there are many of us facing the same problem and that i hope its a software issue to which she said, "That's what we are going to find out. the logs will be sent to our engineers. You will get a reply within 3 days, if not connect with us with the case number and my colleagues will be able to help".

Hopefully we'll get to know more on this soon.

I had a replacement for this exact issue on Monday and the replacement also has the crackling distorted speaker at anything above 60% volume. Compared side by side with my 7 Plus, which doesn't have the issue, and it's in all apps. Someone from Apple's senior specialist team told me they haven't heard of the exact issue I'm experiencing. They have escalated to the engineering team and I'm waiting to hear back within 2-3 days.

I've not seen a single review mention this crackle. Do they all have crap hearing or is this not really an issue?

Their testing is superficial and they focus on other stuff usually. No one mentions call quality, speaker quality, signal strength...

Yeah, why would you call your family and friends and have a great call quality instead of a rattling external speaker, when you can be on Facebook all day long or do benchmarks...

This is the shocking part of it.

I just received my iPhone X SG 256gb Verizon on Monday and noticed today the crackling issue.

Strangely I first noticed a “metallic” sound during phone calls through the earpiece, not the speakerphone. It does improve if I lower the volume during the call at least 3-4 bars. Is this part of the same issue or do I have a defective phone that needs replacement? It’s really bugging me during regular calls...

That’s what it’s about. You won’t be able to use the volume on a speakerphone call above 60% or it’ll crackle. It’s not software—it would have been otherwise addressed publicly.

I suspect Apple messed up sourcing the speaker itself or how they implemented it within the notch. I’ll bet my money the speaker grille will be wider next year to let more air out and prevent the rattle of death.

It’s a design flaw, nothing they can fix as the product has been launched. All iPhone 10 have it—people saying they don’t are either not sensitive to it, or simply don’t use the phone in a way that would make it obvious.

I am more worried about regular calls through the earpiece (without the speakerphone being on) sounding “metallic”, it’s driving me crazy but I don’t see other people complaining about the earpiece except when the speakerphone is on...

My speakerphone is acceptable if I keep it two notches below max but the earpiece during calls is random at 80% sometimes it’s “metallic” and sometimes it’s not...

So second iphone X just arrived and as you can imagine it crackles too.. Now the difference is that it doesnt do it when on calls, but as annoying as before when on speaker or music playing. These facts make me think that
1) All iphone Xs suffer from this up to a degree
2) That degree is not the same for all devices, and people who can hear it when on calls (and not on speaker) are more likely to complain more.
3) We can just start ignoring people who say that they don't have this issue, the truth is that they probably just don't notice it. Two friends told me that, on the first I could hear the crackle and on the second he changed his mind when I sent him the calvin harris - slide link.

Check my comment above, I think that while we all have the speaker issue NOT all of us have the metallic/earpiece issue

Verizon 256GB SG here, first November 3rd shipment. I am to suffering from the speaker crackle. I've read that some 8's were having a similar issue out of the ear piece speaker and Apple acknowledged it and pushed out 11.0.2 for the 8's.

Have we had an official announcement for the X's?

It's so bad, that mine will crackle even before it hits 50%.

Part of me thinks its a hardware issue / design flaw and the other thinks its a iOS problem.

Thanks for your input, I am not sure if I should wait for the next update or return/exchange the iPhone X and risk getting one with the same issues or worse...

I am starting to think it is software related because I had the metallic sound through the earpiece yesterday during a couple of calls and there seems to be a pattern to it. If the phone sits for a while unused the first received or dialed call has the metallic sound to it, in fact it happened when I called my mother and as soon as I hung up and called her back it stopped with metallic noise. Happened a second time later in the day and same thing, hung up and called back and noise is gone, WTF???
