Im sorry but I have to say it.... It's a phone. A phone! People will be paying monthly payments on this thing for YEARS! and then upgrade to another phone and make more payments for YEARS! You look at Facebook and make phone calls, or even text someone. I do not understand why someone would pay a grand or more for an edge to edge screen, or facial recognition that may or may not work reliably. It's a phone. It makes sense if an OLED screen extends battery life, but otherwise why? How many pixels do we need in order to watch a movie on a 6 inch screen? How much better does Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook have to look? Enough is enough. I have to say I have fallen off the edge here. I used to stand in line like so many others when the early iPhones were released. Nowadays, it's just hype and not worth the time. Nothing more.

You should compare the S8 with X since both are 5.8in and have about same specs.
S8: $500-600 X: $999-1199

You can't compare Note 8 which has higher specs incl. bigger 6.3in screen and pen.
With all the bundled assessories for Note 8, the effective price is quite a bit cheaper than X too.
well in the UK the iphone X is still a £130 more expensive than the note 8 and the 256GB is £280 more expensive which is crazy really.

This is the perfect example of where the notch is really, really bad if there is no setting to get around this. I can easily see games where that is the exact and only area where you need to click, and you can't because of the notch.
You think developers are going to put apps on the App Store that have UI elements where the camera notch is? Seriously?

Verizon is charging $756 retail for the S8. While it is still less than the $999 for the X, it is closer than the $500-600 you quoted.

Ohh really?! You mean Samsungs phone has an A11 chip with speed and performance breakthroughs that have yet to make it into any Samsung product? You mean Samsung is giving you in store help even if you don't have Apple Care. Unlimited returns within he return window. They are at least several generations behind. Or perhaps you mean the facial recognition that scans your face with a gazillion pixels and has security flaws. That pen isn't worth anything on the phone like it is the tablet. Low to no resale value on Samsung products. Android which is a malware magnet.

Apple devices have always been priced higher than galaxy products and have always lasted longer than galaxy products. What Galaxy product do you know that is getting 4years of hardware and software support?

It won’t be like that. There’s already a video for developers telling them what and how to design for the new iPhone X. All controls will be placed inside the safe area. If the app uses standard iOS controls then it’ll happen automatically. Don’t panic.

Is this really strong glass strong enough to go without a case?
The glass back is going to be a finger and palm-print magnet. But you'll have it in a case, right? :D
In real life usage glass is more scratch resistant than painted metal. iPhone 4 after years of use looks better than iPhone 6. Both were used without cases.

Iphone x will be faster most likely but it won't be light years better. Samsung least has given people options for unlocking the device. Hopefully face ID works great but right now it remains to be seen how great it will be.

Never heard of any android device getting any kind of malware. Think thats clearly a myth that people like to make up about android devices.

Software support is great sure but how often do people keep their phones for 4 years? hell even 2 years is a push for many people these days

Iphone X is going to be a great device but £130 better..that will see.

I'm happy with it. Sad there wasn't a whole lot of things we hadn't already seen in leaks. The Face ID thing is pretty sweet. The tech involved with doing realtime facial scanning and animating the Animoji's and such is pretty incredible in a phone. The notch really doesn't bother me all that much. Seems like a lot of worry over nothing. And I kind of like the little cutouts at the top on each side for the signal icons and such. Also a good way to separate the two pull-down menus.

I'm going to order one. Compared to what I pay for my current iPhone 7 plus every month on the replacement plan, this will only increase my payments about $10 per month. For me, not that big a deal.

It seems concerning that when Craig Federighi first attempted to demo the new iPhone X the Face ID feature did not work right away. He tried twice with the first iPhone X he picked up and couldn't get it to work. He then switched to a backup iPhone X on the stand and it opened up immediately.

Has Apple explained what happened? At least one site (The Verge) that got a hands-on demo reported that there were issues getting the Face ID to work reliably.

As I said, concerning.

Mark

Or as Phil stated, if you don't want the phone to unlock, look away or close your eyes and it won't unlock.

But seriously, let's see how quick people figure out ways to unlock phones with facebook pictures just like they did with Samsung's phone.
How about the time it takes your finger to get to the Touch ID button

I'm still in the TouchID > FaceID camp.

Did you try FaceID yet?

about privacy and face id .. now anyone can take your phone put it in front of your face and unlock your phone .. police will love this!

Only if you look at the phone :)

Also - you can press the power button 5 times in a row or something and force the iPhone into a password authentication that way

Wasn't an error. The phone rebooted. Same as needing passcode for touch ID when this happens. It's all over Twitter about this.

Hmmmm, the current on specifically states that the code is required "after a restart". The message on Craig's screen looked like the one you see after a few failed attempts.

That's the thing, tho. There was no error. The phone was prompting him to enter the passcode to enable Face ID, no different than when you have to enter it for Touch ID after restarting the phone. Apparently they had restarted the phone but not done the initial unlock. See for yourself:

That is the same error message you would expect from a failed attempt. After a restart the phone specifically mentions code is "required after a restart". Mine certainly does.

Facebook looks AMAZING... I can see pictures of other people's food with such clarity. My texts are breathtakingly clear. My email text just jumps out at me. It's... Striking. So glad the screen is so striking. I could not get by without it. I am going to make monthly payments for the next three years just to have these features.

apparently it doesn't look at the post above yours .. i was thinking the same but thank god no notch while playing movies :)
If you go to the 1:35 mark of the keynote, you'll see where Craig is showing off pictures and videos and the the image wraps around the notch.

Since the iPhone X doesn't have a 19:1 ratio perhaps there's the option for letterboxing like there was on the earlier iPhones, which would hide the notch.

Does anyone with any industry knowledge know if there was an unavoidable reason that they had to raise the price of the X? Is there a specific component of Nthe iPhone X that's really that much more expensive than the 8??? Because am I correct in thinking that competitors with edge-to-edge displays didn't have to raise their prices to achieve this feature?? Part of me honestly thinks that Tim ****ed up by not getting enough OLED production capacity, but he knew they had to bring out some sort of edge-to-edge product otherwise people would be mad.. so he had to either make a limited more expensive OLED iPhone and make the 8 cheaper or make the X more expensive.. and the he chose the latter to avoid cannibalising profits..

Yes, I have that knowledge.

In order to keep profit margins close to 40% the price had to be what it is.

The reasons have to do with components and/or NRE's I'd say. That covers it.

Good catch. It isn't worded the same way it is for a restart. This makes me wonder, then, why it needed the passcode in order to enable Face ID. Clearly, he did not attempt it multiple times — just once. It should've said "try again" like it does for Touch ID. It's only after several failed attempts that the phone disables Touch ID and then directs you to enter the passcode in order to enable it once again. Obviously something didn't go as planned but I don't necessarily believe it was because the phone failed to recognize his face.

The Fanboyism here is garishly disturbing. The FACE ID failed in the demo and yet everyone is applauding it.

This will not be easy to use in the car while driving at all. Nobody is even mentioning that.

Good. You're driving a 4 ton death machine, please keep your eyes on the road.

And FaceID didn't fail, the password has to be entered before it can be used the first time, just like with TouchID.
