I couldn't agree more. A grand is a ridiculous price when you consider the competition can do it for so much less. Although I'm due for an upgrade next Spring, I'll pass. No phone is worth a grand.

Not at all. I'm glad you can't or won't afford it. No iPhone X for peasants! ✌️

Good catch. It isn't worded the same way it is for a restart. This makes me wonder, then, why it needed the passcode in order to enable Face ID. Clearly, he did not attempt it multiple times — just once. It should've said "try again" like it does for Touch ID. It's only after several failed attempts that the phone disables Touch ID and then directs you to enter the passcode in order to enable it once again. Obviously something didn't go as planned but I don't necessarily believe it was because the phone failed to recognize his face.

There could be bugs in the software. I bet they will try to fix all the bugs.

It's actually surgical grade Stainless Steel not an Aluminum casing. #edit?

That ought to come in handy while in the operating room.

Interesting how someone with common sense is called a peasant. What do you call people who can't actually afford the phone but finance it for 3 plus years?

Yep. And another thing I noticed is that the iPhone was already prompting him to "swipe up to unlock" before he even had the opportunity to point it at his face. This would lead me to believe that Face ID hadn't been enabled yet as opposed to a failed attempt issue.

I'm still in the TouchID > FaceID camp.

Don't worry, it is normal.
First it was password/pin vs touch iID
Then 3.5mm jack vs wireless
then Face ID vs Touch ID.
This is Macrumors you know...... where everything is met with skepticism. .

But one thing is for sure. You won't be on that camp for too long (unless you switch platform)

Again, everyone wanted it to look like this:

about privacy and face id .. now anyone can take your phone put it in front of your face and unlock your phone .. police will love this!

Didn't you fallow the keynoe? You got to look at it to unlock it.Meaning looking at the camera.
Anyway, why do people come up with silly idiotic stuff? How often have you seen people to grab a phone and forcibly try to unlock it with it's owners fingers?

Rightfully deserved price with the Note 8...that's for sure. Samsung packs more into its device including a bigger display, 6 gb ram and a S pen so I can see where there pricing structure goes to. I can't say the same for Apple.

Jesus! Never heard one person shill a product so much in one sentence. You should be a salesman.

I don't understand. Don't most of us stick our iphones in cases so as to protect these expensive devices from drops? So what's the big deal about the design when we cover it all up.
A case for the iPhone X will either need cutouts for the "ears," which would therefore not cover up the design, or it wouldn't have cutouts, which would obscure the status bar. This isn't like hiding the camera bump.

I don't know, maybe all the leaks spoiled it for me. But other than the gorgeous new design, I don't see anything here that's truly "revolutionary." That justifies spending almost $1,400. I say $1,400 because I'm assuming the 256 GB model will be $1,100 plus $250 for AppleCare and taxes. And the iPhone 8 looks exactly the same as the 7. Kind of disappointed in the iPhone line up.

In Europe (converted from Euro to US dollar) the iPhone X 64GB is approx $1400 and 256GB $1600 without AppleCare but with taxes included. What I find very strange is the fact that Samsung Galaxy S8+ is approximately $950. Apparently Galaxy S8+ has better screen and that's hardly surprising since they manufacture both Galaxy S8 and iPhone X screens. So, why on earth is iPhone X $450-650 more expensive than a Samsung S8+ which apparently has better hardware? I accept the higher price of iPhone 8 but that should have been iPhone X and Apple should have just skipped the iPhone 8 altogether.

Still not tempted by iPhone "Notch" @ parity with USA $999 = UK £999 with exchange rate currently at £1.00 = $1.33
price should be £752.44p NOT £999.00

A grand for a phone, you've gotta be kidding.

Don't forget VAT. So £752 + VAT = £903.

The Fanboyism here is garishly disturbing. The FACE ID failed in the demo and yet everyone is applauding it.

This will not be easy to use in the car while driving at all. Nobody is even mentioning that.

Thank you for the first reason to actually like Face ID. Then again, idiots will try to use the phone while driving regardless, possibly just ending up dead faster. Let's just hope there's not too many innocents taken to grave with them.

Apple just officially announced the iPhone X, its all-new, drastically redesigned, tenth anniversary iPhone. Right after the keynote where it debuted, reporters were treated to the hands-on demo room within the Steve Jobs Theater where they got to be among the first people in the world to hold an iPhone X. Below we'll round up some of the first impressions on the device, which many publications are describing as "beautiful," "striking," and a "sensational-looking" iPhone.

SlashGear called the iPhone X "familiar, and yet so very different," alluding to the aluminum casing of the new iPhone that matches the original iPhone's design, while also commenting on the "striking" OLED display. While other smartphones have had OLED screens, SlashGear said the iPhone X "takes it to another level," with text and graphics that look "embedded into the toughened glass" of the display.

Although the top "notch" of the screen looked intrusive in viewing some photos and videos, the site largely said that it shouldn't get in the way much elsewhere.
The Verge said that the "star of the show" for the iPhone X is its 5.8-inch OLED screen, which goes to great lengths in proving that an iPhone without a Home Button can actually work. Furthermore, the site said Face ID "actually works," with a nearby Apple demo assistant repeatedly showing off the biometric security feature, which "worked every time" even under the bright and erratic conditions of the demo area.

The Verge continued by noting a few of the iPhone X's control gestures will likely take some time to get used to, including swiping up to go home, but over time the site predicted it'll become just as natural as current UI controls on iOS 10. Like many sites, The Verge noted the $999 price tag for the starting model of the iPhone X, but said that for most users it'll feel "worth it."
TechRadar called the iPhone X "easily, easily the best-looking phone Apple's ever made," with rear glass that feels "solid and secure" in the hand and the rounded edges and light form factor make it "pleasant to hold," although fingerprints will be a problem. Despite being slightly smaller than an iPhone 7 Plus, TechRadar noted that some iPhone X gestures will still require two hands, and pointed out that "you can't reach the top right-hand corner as easily" for bringing up the new control center.

Unlike The Verge's experience, TechRadar described a questionable demo experience with Face ID, where the demo worker had to keep turning the display off and on to active the facial recognition system. Still, it noted that daily testing will be required to truly see the potential of Face ID -- as well as all of the iPhone X's new features -- and came away largely impressed by the smartphone, particularly the display.
According to iMore's Rene Ritchie, the Face ID feature in the iPhone X will store just one face at a time, so only one person will be able to unlock a given device. To switch faces, the Face ID feature will need to be reset.

The iPhone X will officially be up for pre-order on October 27, and then go on sale November 3, starting at $999 for the 64GB version and rising to $1,149 for the 256GB version. Apple revealed the iPhone X earlier today, alongside the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple TV 4K.

[doublepost=1505284075][/doublepost]No no no no no.
Techradar was completely taken out of context in their quote. Firstly, by "demo" they were talking about the main presentation. And this has already been discussed EVERYWHERE. Face ID wasn't at fault, the phone was requesting a PIN after 1) being turned off/on 2) for not being used for a long period.
Secondly, Techradar WAS NOT able to actually demo the phone. As per their article "We've not been able to try it out in the demo area, but this is certainly something we want to test to see if it's a worthy replacement for Touch ID."

That entire quote should be removed, they didn't even get to demo the phone themselves and there was nothing wrong with Face ID during the presentation if anything, we got a good sense of what security looks like on the platform...

Don't forget VAT. So £752 + VAT = £903.

Okay but its still £100.00 more than advertised. Also a 12 month Warranty? for £1000 phone, Samsung UK offer 24 months.

Apple put your money where your mouth is and offer 24 months. And lower the price to £799 to £899 (max).

I’m getting 2 iPhone Xs regardless of criticisms. Most likely the 256GB versions too. The big reason is that it IS a value proposition. The phone is something that we use every day. Over 356 days per year that means the price of a 256GB iPhone X (USD$1149)is about $3.30 per day which is less than a Starbucks Latte. The stainless steel band and the all glass design that harkens back to iPhone 4 days (my absolute favorite iPhone launch) basically means that you get a great iPhone for the year. The potential issues like the switch to OLED, FaceID, Qi inductive charging, and the new welding method I think will pan out in the end. The most controversial feature of the iPhone X is most likely going to be FaceID but for a first gen try for Apple, it looks to be better than the Samsung counterpart due to its dot spatial awareness method. Even if it takes me 4 months to get my hands on one, to me, it’s already an integral part of my life. It enables me to get more done and to enjoy life more. That said, the price could have been higher and I still would have paid it. What is it worth to you?

Thats because you should NEVER use your phone in the car while driving. It's the number one reason for young people to die. Glad they introduce Do Not Disturb While Driving in iOS 11.

If you plan to only use it only as a phone, it would be a giant waste of money. But the whole point of it is that it does so much more.

Yes, exactly! You can also do animated emojis with it! OMG! Just take my money!

In real life, it offers nothing to justify the price.

Don’t shoot the messenger guys. But the big rumor floating around the internet is Tim Cook has somehow “managed” to get his hands on an iPhone X. Despite the fact that there is a supply side problem. And get this, he has one in each color.

about privacy and face id .. now anyone can take your phone put it in front of your face and unlock your phone .. police will love this!

And they couldn't put your finger on the Touch sensor???

I cried a little when FaceId failed during the demo.

Just to be clear, since I’ve seen multiple posts about this. FaceID didn’t fail. The phone was locked until you put it your password after turning on the phone for security measures.

You can just close your eyes and it won't unlock. I assume that the police can't force your eyes open just as they can't force your hand with the current touch-ID.

If I recall correctly, this is actually how it looked during the demo when they had the Music app open. Makes me wonder if they couldn't decide which way to go themselves.

That said, the real sin is that the notch covers up video in landscape mode.

No, sadly the app had square corners in the demo, not rounded like the mockup. This could be changed by a software update though. I hope it does. I think it looks dumb with smooth rounded corners in the bottom of the app and sharp rectangular corners in the top.

We will find out sooner or later. I would fully expect a few glitches here and there and an occasional "failed attempt". After all, it is a series 1 phone. What would worry me more is the fact, that the (working) unlocking seemed slow. Kdarling wrote in another post that he thinks the FaceID was Apple's backup plan because the technology for TouchID embedded in the screen wasn't ready. I also fully believe that was the case.
