I went to the Apple store today to experience the iPhone X phenomenon. I must say the phone is too small. I was not impressed. I have no regrets moving to the Note 8 having been in the iPhone ecosystem since 2008. The Note 8 is a far superior phone in many respects. My decision was based on facts, not emotions.
Great, I am glad you managed to find validation to your decision, even if it's only subjective self-validation. Good luck with your Note 8.

I would have been impressed if there had been an X Plus version but that didn’t happen.

I posted this elsewhere, but here are the facts. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

1. Note 8 has a larger screen.
2. Size wise, it's a little taller than the iPhone 6 plus I had, so the size of it does not bother me.
3. It has an micro SD card, the iPhone X doesn't.
4. It has headphone jack, the iPhone X doesn't.
5. Samsung screen has a higher resolution than the iPhone X's screen
6. The notch on the iPhone X bothers me. The phone is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. The Samsung Note 8 is beautiful and symmetrical. It reminds me of the monolith from the 2001: a Space Odyssey.
7. I use the S-pen occasionally for writing quick notes and to do lists. The iPhone X doesn't have one.
8. You can customize the Note 8. You can't with the iPhone X.
9. The Note 8 retains the virtual home button. The iPhone X did away with it.
10. Granted it is located in an awkward position, the Note 8 has a finger scanner. The iPhone doesn't.
11. Note 8 has a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, and a facial recognition system. The iPhone X only has face ID.
12. The Note 8 has 6GB of RAM.
13. Google Voice is well integrated into Note 8. I could, for example, unlock the phone with my voice. Google voice, in my opinion, is far more advanced than Apple's Siri. Bixby is far behind Google voice and Siri, I admit that.

Why stop there.

The Note 8 has a filing sydtem, the X diesn't.
You can create MS word, excel and powerpoint slides on the Note 8, try doing that on an iphone, it's almost impossible.
You can draw on the Note 8 as you can on an ipad, but not on an X.
The Note comes complete with almost a complete set of editing tools. You can cut out the shape of a picture (don't confude this with crooping) to almost pinpoint accuracy using the pen and then ilsuoerimoose the cut out on any other picture you want.
The Note 8 is a productive, creative and media consuming device. I would argue the X is limited to being just a media consuming device.
The Note 8 works as well as the X, and iszas fast. Doubting me, check out Everything Apple Pro's video.
The camera is as good as the X, if not better.
The screen can be seen in all weather conditions due to having twice as many nits as the X.
The Note comes with software which prevents oled burn. Apple's plot to prevent oled burn was Tim Cook's message to buyers after the event.
I could go on and on and on and on and farking on about how much more the Note 8 has over the X it's not even a joke.

So if you think this is a troll, or if you doubt any of this, then all I can say is check out the Note for yourself, or what a ******** of reviews. Again this is by no means a troll. Almost in every facet, the Note 8 is superior to the X. It just is. The op was on point.

Honestly the note 8 is a wonderful phone. That being said, I couldn’t handle a phone that big for everyday use. I’d love the screen if I could fold the thing in half in my pocket lol.

Anyone that is truly looking at the note 8 is going to find any iPhone just too small for their needs. Dollar for dollar I think the note 8 is the better value today. That is if you’re able to deal with the eft while stowing.

I think touch id under the screen would've been a bigger hit. No notch, no need to totally change the UI and interface. Or go all screen and have touch id on the enlarged power button.

But the reality is, Apples goal was never to have touch ID under the display initially, as they wanted Face ID to be the primary. Craig Federighi stated that touch ID under the display was always Plan B and Face ID was their true goal until they knew it would be feasible.

There’s still the earpiece speaker, ambient light sensor, camera, etc that they’d need so you’d still have a notch. It just might have been a bit smaller is all.

Face ID is awesome. Things like going to a site where you have to fill in your login details, it authenticates your face and fills it in automatically is great. No need to even do anything like touch a fingerprint sensor.

I get it that was their 1st goal, but with Face ID being 1st gen it feels a little rushed, with it being the 10th iphone it needed to have a "splash". But little things, like it not working in landscape, limited angle when lying flat, makes it feel to me like it was rushed.

I get it, Apple does things like this, but it doesn't mean it's better for everyone. Face ID is still slower than touch id, touch id can be used lying down, upside down, etc. The UI feels cluttered somewhat now, I preferred control center on the bottom for one-handed access for me, now it's a swipe from the top on a device that's taller now, with notifications now having to be done from the top of the opposite side. A swipe to me for home is still more than literally just pressing. A double press for multitasking to me is simpler than a swipe halfway and hold.

That bar on the bottom could at least be a force touch home button if you keep Face ID and the notch. Could've still kept control center at the bottom, and kept some semblance of UI uniformity across its devices. Touch ID could've at least been in the elongated power button.

My issue is more with the UI shift. I understand the notch, it is what it is, but things like moving control center to the upper right corner of a taller phone from the bottom makes no sense to me in terms of ease of access.

Thanks for sharing OP.

I am very very impressed with mine. The screen, the cameras, everything. I feels great to hold also with the glass back and stainless steel band.

Along with the iPhone 4 my favourite iPhone design so far.

Have you used one for awhile? I had most of the same complaints as you, but after using it for a few days, they are pretty much gone. FaceID is working better for me than touchID. Feels incredibly seamless. Love the locked notifications that unlock when you look at it. The swiping up also was very easy for me to get used to. Something about it combined with the feel of the phone just feels solid/right. I haven't tried to hit the home button ONCE, which I didn't anticipate.

However control center is definitely not ideal. You can use reachability to bring it down and then swipe, which makes it much easier (but adds another step). I have been realizing that I don't really need to access control center as much as I thought I did.

Not saying its perfect, and I agree that uniformity is important, but I've gotten used to it and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the phone (and I really thought it was going to). Pretty happy so far.

My buddy just got the note 8 and I was considering it. I love iPhone in and out and have owned many androids. Even though when I jump to Android I come crawling back and rather quickly. I actually hate the android and iOS comparisons because they are actually pretty different OS’s. But once I played with the X I snapped out of wanting the note. I know I will just jump to iPhone again and it will a waste of time and money. Honestly my interest for the note really stopped at the screen. Samsung does a great job with their devices but touchwiz....my oh my what a garbage skin that they need to ditch already. And getting upgrades 8 months after all other androids is frustrating. Not to mention it’s crazy how a octo core phone will start to feel rather sluggish after a couple months of use. Enjoy the note 8 man but you will deff come back to iOS in no time, trust me.

But it isn’t

Note 8 is different to the x. It’s not better. It provides different things for a certain market

If also runs touchwiz and not IOS. For many that’s a big issue

People factor in ego system, updates and support when buying phones and this is where the x is a level above the note 8

Is note 8 a great phone? Yes better than the x for most? Nope

And sales figures show that

yes i've been using one. And it's not loud, screaming complaining, but more observations about overall thought process/direction. Control center at the bottom was ideal for me, especially for one handed access. To move it to the top right, then notifications to the top left, of a taller phone just seems ill-conceived to even basic ui interface. This would be even worse on a supposed X plus if it came. Yes, people I'm sure will get used to it, but it doesn't make it ideal to me.

Again, imo the bottom bar could be a force touch home button, could've left cc where it's been, notifications where it's been, etc.

The notch is a supposed necessary compromise to apple's supposed focus on symmetry, but thinking about what they've done with the X, if competitors did some of these things, lots of Apple fans would be ridiculing a device like this.

Fair enough. At least its all software now, so it will be interesting to see how it develops in the future.

This is a great point. FaceID is more than just a different way to unlock your phone. They way it handles things like hiding details in notifications until you look at them, or filling in passwords without you needing to consciously put your finger on touchID, makes it a much nicer experience to use. And I’m sure those features will improve over time.

Control Center is a git for me. I use it a lot to get to the calculator and that’s a lot more annoying now. I might actually put PCalc on the home screen and do it that way

Which "facts" was your decision based on? Id love to hear those

Btw, your fact number 1, larger screen, is ridiculous because, yes yo u guessed right, not everyone likes bigger screens, especially like mote 8 which is like carrying a piece of 2x4 in your pocket.

In a way they are the same and in a way they are different. They are the same because they both offer the same basic things you expect from a smartphone in 2017: great camera, apps, music player, several methods to communicate with the outside world, internet communicator and a few other things. They are also different because where the iphone stops being a smartphone the Note starts being a mini personal computer, the pen gives it so much more capability than any other smartphone. And I don't place too much emphasis on sales because preorders would have been high even before the device went to market, people are buying it because it's Apple and a lot would not have even heard of the Note. Apple could put its logo on a turd and it will still sell like hotcakes, however the Note line is gathering momentum with its own cult following, we are seeing it now, even on this forum several people are turning to the Note. Give it a few more years and then compare. As for the ecosystem, Samsung is developing its own however an ecosystem takes into account other devices, it's not the iphone versus the Note in isolation. And besides, if you got a Note I could argue you don't need any other device, it's a phablett and can be used as a computer if need be, unlike the iphone. The Note is better because it is far more capable and really, the difference in peformance is becoming more and more negligible every year. The Note has come along way and I can only see Samsung putting more daylight between it and the competition. I'm not sure if you're getting the point, but I'm not pro Samsung, I'm frustrated Apple, I'm an iphone user myself and am frustrated by the lack of advancement in the iphone. Something pretty special needs to come to iphone next year or even more people will be switching to the Note 9, myself included. Just the thought of the Note 9 is getting me excited because I know Samsung will add to that even more. Sad to say, but I don't expect too much from Apple next year. But I'll hold my breath on the off chance they do.

Spread your paragraphs out dude. Very hard to read and reply to your points like that

If you are somebody who wants all their major needs on your phone then yes note 8 is a great option as it’s a great productive device.

If you have the x you likely have other devices where it can do more productive tasks. So does one person need to do so much productivity on just one device? Most don’t. The s pen is great to have but stuff I would use that for I would use on my iPad for such work.

As I said though note 8 is for a certain market. It hasn’t sold well as not everybody wants that kind of device. Doesn’t mean it’s not a great device.

I’m sorry but egosystem is still below par on Samsung. Their flagship phones are what stands out but other Devices aren’t on the same level really as the iPad, MacBook Pro for example.

Samsung are only going to improve though and they have made the jump in recent years by a good distance.

You will likely see the plus version of the x next year which for many will be perfect for those not keen on the x

Just because you don't like phones with large screens doesn't dispute the fact that the note 8 screen is larger.

Anyone who ‘doesn’t like the gestures’ and yet hasn’t used the X is talking directly out of their anus, and can be safely ignored.
The home button feels like sending a fax.

You fail to mention battery life issues with the Note 8. And the fact that Samsung purposely ships them at a lower resolution by default because the highest resolution setting would drain the battery too fast. It doesn't run native at the published resolution.

Thanks for your input, I will enjoy my IPX.

On the contrary. It's people who feel defensive and insecure about their phones who have the urge to attack others because any criticism of Apple is perceived to be heretical even if it is from someone like myself who has been a long time iPhone user. I simply stated an opinion based on facts. Iphone X is gimmicky with no "wow" factor. If you are impressed by face ID, silly animated emojis, and a camera lens sticking out from the body frame, then all the power to you. All phones have flaws and limitations, including the Note 8.

The Note 8 is a great phone, but the V10 is better, as is (arguably) the Essential phone and the OnePlus. The only thing that keeps me away is Android and its fragmentation. This isn't to say I don't love my iPhone X, but I am open to new things...
