I went to the Apple store today to experience the iPhone X phenomenon. I must say the phone is too small. I was not impressed. I have no regrets moving to the Note 8 having been in the iPhone ecosystem since 2008. The Note 8 is a far superior phone in many respects. My decision was based on facts, not emotions.

I posted this elsewhere, but here are the facts. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

1. Note 8 has a larger screen.
2. Size wise, it's a little taller than the iPhone 6 plus I had, so the size of it does not bother me.
3. It has an micro SD card, the iPhone X doesn't.
4. It has headphone jack, the iPhone X doesn't.
5. Samsung screen has a higher resolution than the iPhone X's screen
6. The notch on the iPhone X bothers me. The phone is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. The Samsung Note 8 is beautiful and symmetrical. It reminds me of the monolith from the 2001: a Space Odyssey.
7. I use the S-pen occasionally for writing quick notes and to do lists. The iPhone X doesn't have one.
8. You can customize the Note 8. You can't with the iPhone X.
9. The Note 8 retains the virtual home button. The iPhone X did away with it.
10. Granted it is located in an awkward position, the Note 8 has a finger scanner. The iPhone doesn't.
11. Note 8 has a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, and a facial recognition system. The iPhone X only has face ID.
12. The Note 8 has 6GB of RAM.
13. Google Voice is well integrated into Note 8. I could, for example, unlock the phone with my voice. Google voice, in my opinion, is far more advanced than Apple's Siri. Bixby is far behind Google voice and Siri, I admit that.

I too am getting a little weary about iOS and the iPhone X. I’ll be most interested in the Samsung galaxy S9 when is released early next year. Apple can be so much more in providing a really fantastic hardware offering, but each and every year as I see it, though Apple produces good phones, they are not as pleasing as Samsungs galaxy for one reason or another, I don’t know, maybe just me. Even though I like the ecosystem, I may just look towards the competition a little bit more closely.

You forgot two. IP68 for the Galaxy and IP67 for Apple & with more memory the Note can have more tabs open and you won’t have any reloads. The YouTube video below shows what 3 GB memory can do on an iPhone 8+ over the Note 8 memory. Yes I know it’s the iPhone 8 Plus and not the iPhone X but they both had the same memory

I played (animoji speak) with a X yesterday. I like the design, the notch only bothers me when watching video in full screen mode. The only interface issue for me was the new Touch Gesturing required. I think some will adjust fine, some will not. Many felt uncomfortable for me. Especially having to scroll down from the top for control center. Very unnatural. However, thats just me. I don't care for OLED. Don't like the color shift, don't like the risk of Burn In. When Apple releases Micro LED in place of this display I'll look again. :apple:

Makes me really curious what screen tech will be in the lineup next year

Just OLED and this new form?

Or some LED models too

1. Note 8 has a larger screen. - Yes, and so will the X+ next year
2. Size wise, it's a little taller than the iPhone 6 plus I had, so the size of it does not bother me. - Agreed
3. It has an micro SD card, the iPhone X doesn't. - For me, makes no difference
4. It has headphone jack, the iPhone X doesn't. - Again, no difference to me
5. Samsung screen has a higher resolution than the iPhone X's screen - I've seen the Samsung Note 8 screen, it's very nice as well, but we really are splitting hairs here. Both are fantastic.
6. The notch on the iPhone X bothers me. The phone is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. The Samsung Note 8 is beautiful and symmetrical. It reminds me of the monolith from the 2001: a Space Odyssey. - I'm on the other side of this, I'm not a fan of the Note 8 design. The notch is an identifiable feature and you forget about it pretty quickly. The only time it is annoying is if you watch video in landscape mode.
7. I use the S-pen occasionally for writing quick notes and to do lists. The iPhone X doesn't have one. - I'm pretty sure there is an apple pen but i think it is for ipads. This is a fair point.
8. You can customize the Note 8. You can't with the iPhone X. - This is the classic Android vs. Apple debate, has nothing to do specificlaly with the phones themselves.
9. The Note 8 retains the virtual home button. The iPhone X did away with it. - After getting used to the gestures, I can honestly say that a home button is unnecessary.
10. Granted it is located in an awkward position, the Note 8 has a finger scanner. The iPhone doesn't. - Some people care about this, for me i hated touch ID, glad to see it go.
11. Note 8 has a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, and a facial recognition system. The iPhone X only has face ID. - Okay
12. The Note 8 has 6GB of RAM. - Good point, however will anyone really see the difference? My X is so fast I can't imagine it needing to be any faster.
13. Google Voice is well integrated into Note 8. I could, for example, unlock the phone with my voice. Google voice, in my opinion, is far more advanced than Apple's Siri. Bixby is far behind Google voice and Siri, I admit that. - I don't use Siri so I can't comment

This just sounds like a "Man, I should have waited... I'll make a thread on Macrumors downplaying how good the iPhone X is so I can feel better about my decision to go with a Note 8." thread.

Why would a Note 8 owner go out of their way to make a thread on a Apple fan based forum saying how unimpressed they are, when they are a Note 8 owner? If you were a iPhone 6s Plus/ 7 plus owner, it would make more sense, but this is pretty obvious. C'mon now...

I've messed around with the iPhone X 2-3 times now... it is clearly Apple's best phone, and I think it is the best one they're ever made. The notch isn't really that big of a deal, you forget its even there within a minute or two of using it (just like almost every reviewer has been saying). The black one is just... I pre-ordered one.

I'm hopeful Apple will go all Micro LED. They have made amazing progress in their Taiwan R&D Center. It's the Tools required to manufacture at scale that are the current roadblock. :apple:

There’s a lot of that going on these last few days. I agree based on the last 2 sentences.

Lol... While the Note 8 is a fantastic phone, I just got my iphone X to replace a iphone 6. It's pretty awesome and face ID is actually a huge improvement over touch id --- i love the "secret" notifications that only open up for you....

And the lack of a home button is actually unnerving at first, then after doing the swipe up from the bottom, you start to realize how much BETTER it is than clicking on a home button 🙂

The only thing I don't like is that control center is a bit harder to get to now and can only be activated from swiping from the top right of the screen -- that's a bit far away.

6 to X... what a quantum leap

So, for points # 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9... oh wait who am I kidding. This entire list of "facts" are usage and subjectivity based. Just because the N8 has a memory card slot, someone should buy it? Just because the N8 has a larger screen, someone should buy it? Just because the N8 has a virtual home button, someone should buy it? You see where I'm going with this, right?

You claim in your original post that you made your decision to go with the N8 over the iPhoneX based on facts. With the list you gave us, it looks as if you took a list of subjective "qualities" or lack thereof, and made your decision. The "fact" that the N8 has 6GB of ram, or a larger screen, or a pen isn't why you purchased the device. It's how you perceive those traits of the phone that caused you to purchase it or prefer it over the iPhoneX. You claim that these 13 points make the N8 superior over the iPhoneX, however fail to mention that superiority is completely subjective as well. Just because a phone has a finger print scanner, larger screen, sd card slot, headphone jack etc doesn't make it inherently superior. It's how you personally view that device. It's not a fact that those contention points make the phone superior.

1. Note 8 has a larger screen. - True.. so do many other phones. The iPhone X wasn't marketed as a 'plus' size phone...
2. Size wise, it's a little taller than the iPhone 6 plus I had, so the size of it does not bother me. - Agreed
3. It has an micro SD card, the iPhone X doesn't. - Never had a need for this.
4. It has headphone jack, the iPhone X doesn't. - I never really used it on my 6s after getting wireless headphones
5. Samsung screen has a higher resolution than the iPhone X's screen - I'd say this is a barely noticeable difference in day to day use, but if it makes you feel better that's fine.
6. The notch on the iPhone X bothers me. The phone is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. The Samsung Note 8 is beautiful and symmetrical. It reminds me of the monolith from the 2001: a Space Odyssey. - Looks alone aren't that important. I played with the iPhone X in store and quickly got passed the notch, but I agree it will turn some people off.
7. I use the S-pen occasionally for writing quick notes and to do lists. The iPhone X doesn't have one. - I really don't see how the S-pen is all that useful, but maybe that's because I don't have one?
8. You can customize the Note 8. You can't with the iPhone X. - Not really a Note 8 / iPhone X issue - more of an Android / iOS issue. If this is a deal breaker for you than you're not going to be buying an iPhone any time soon.
9. The Note 8 retains the virtual home button. The iPhone X did away with it. - I think the gesture control of the iPhone X will take a bit of getting used to, but i'd imagine, it'l quickly become second nature and a home button will become a forgotten relic of the passed that many other manufactures will adopt in the future. Let's be honest, if you can remove the home button for more screen... why not?
10. Granted it is located in an awkward position, the Note 8 has a finger scanner. The iPhone doesn't. - Yeah I guess... but if you have a superior system why do you need this at all?
11. Note 8 has a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, and a facial recognition system. The iPhone X only has face ID. - Sometimes doing one thing great is better and less confusing than doing many things okay. I think we'll see a shift away from fingerprint recognition in the next few years with all flagship phones trying to replicate the ease of use and accuracy that FaceID has brought to the table.
12. The Note 8 has 6GB of RAM. - But this doesn't really matter with Apple's well optimized software you'll see little to no difference in performance.
13. Google Voice is well integrated into Note 8. I could, for example, unlock the phone with my voice. Google voice, in my opinion, is far more advanced than Apple's Siri. Bixby is far behind Google voice and Siri, I admit that. - I'd say all AI are infants right now, but yeah it is a play for the future. Not sure who will win, but at this moment it's not a big reason to buy any system.

I clicked into this thread to agree with the OP. Four pages later I want to find a Samsung to drop kick. Why do people always go to Samsung when trying to talk down on the iPhone? I've tried so many Galaxys over the years and it literally takes hours for me to realize how superior iOS is to Android and Touchwiz.

I recall a time when I was stuck out of town for a week after deciding I'd put my iPhone 5 away and try a Galaxy S3. The only thing that kept me from smashing it and throwing it in the lake was the idea that I'd get my money back when I got home. And before you spout off about how much better it's gotten since then I also bought the S5 and returned it and was given an S7 by Samsung as a testdrive unit. Neither lasted even close to a week.

Their hardware is great and I have no problem admitting that. If people wanna bash iPhones by comparing to superior integrated hardware/software experiences, talk about the Pixel.

As for the X, sure it's nice. It runs iOS 11. It's got a certain novelty to it with the gesture-based interface but in the end it's still an iPhone and does exactly what my old iPhone does.

My Responses (although I'm sure nobody wants them):

1. Note 8 has a larger screen - Yes it does, but I don't want a huge phone in my pocket.

2. Size wise, it's a little taller than the iPhone 6 plus I had, so the size of it does not bother me. - I had a 7 plus, and got sick of the bulk in my pocket.

3. It has an micro SD card, the iPhone X doesn't. - I have absolutely no use for this. What do you use this for?

4. It has headphone jack, the iPhone X doesn't. - I haven't used wired headphones since my iPhone 5. I hear everyone on the sound quality aspect, but if you get a good pair of bluetooth buds, the wireless freedom far outweighs the sound quality, imho.

5. Samsung screen has a higher resolution than the iPhone X's screen - Sure, but can you really see the difference when holding the phones at arms length?

6. The notch on the iPhone X bothers me. The phone is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. The Samsung Note 8 is beautiful and symmetrical. It reminds me of the monolith from the 2001: a Space Odyssey. - This is entirely subjective, but I find the top and bottom bezels on the note (and other S8 models) to be ugly, while the frame of the iPhone X is a really premium touch.

7. I use the S-pen occasionally for writing quick notes and to do lists. The iPhone X doesn't have one. - I would never use this. The pen takes up space in the body of the phone - I'd prefer that they get rid of it and use that space to make the phone thinner/smaller.

8. You can customize the Note 8. You can't with the iPhone X. - This is an Android vs. iOS issue, not an iPhone X vs Note 8 issue.

9. The Note 8 retains the virtual home button. The iPhone X did away with it. - False - you can actually add a virtual home button through accessibility - and you can even customize it.

10. Granted it is located in an awkward position, the Note 8 has a finger scanner. The iPhone doesn't. - Touch ID is a hair faster than Face ID, no doubt. That said, Touch ID failed on me in more daily situations than Face ID (at least so far). If having to choose just one, I'd choose Face ID. Including both would likely have added bulk. I'd prefer less bulk.

11. Note 8 has a fingerprint scanner, an iris scanner, and a facial recognition system. The iPhone X only has face ID. - I recall hearing that the facial recognition scanner on the Note 8 could be fooled by photos - I also recall hearing that this was corrected in an update. Even still, that concerns me. Again, including all three of these scanners likely adds more bulk.

12. The Note 8 has 6GB of RAM. - Don't you think this is irrelevant when the iPhone X and 8 CRUSH the entire galaxy lineup in benchmarking scores?

13. Google Voice is well integrated into Note 8. I could, for example, unlock the phone with my voice. Google voice, in my opinion, is far more advanced than Apple's Siri. Bixby is far behind Google voice and Siri, I admit that. - I won't act like I love Siri. It has it's issues for sure. I'm not as familiar with Google voice but have heard good things. This may be the one advantage to an android phone that I agree with.

Good points. I would have chosen the iPhone X had it not been for the notch, which is noticeable when you watch videos. A stylus and a bigger screen would have swayed me to the X. Instead, Apple's selling point has been Face ID. Nothing revolutionary about that, especially when many critics are raising concerns about privacy issues.

Of course superiority of one phone over another is subjective. But facts are facts. The fact that the Note 8 has a larger screen is a fact, but because you don't value a larger screen, doesn't make it less of a fact. It is a fact that Note 8 has a headphone jack and the iPhone doesn't, but your preference for a wireless headphone jack over a wired one, doesn't dispute the fact I stated.

Again, I am not trying to convince you to think otherwise. You are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

The issue is Apple and Samsung upgrade their phones every year adding new features and making us believe that they have introduced a superior product. I had the iPhone 6 plus for three years. When the 7 came out, I was not impressed to spend $800 for a new phone. When the iPhone X was introduced, I was even less impressed. Instead of waiting for iPhone X plus or iPhone XI, I opted for Note 8.

  1. Sync with an Apple Watch. Yes the Android options are getting better, but in my opinion the Apple Watch is still the best smartwatch on the market. Besides, I already own one.
No, they are not getting better. I thought that when Android Wear 2 was released and I got rid of my Apple Watch and iPhone to enjoy the "freedom" of my new LG Watch Sport with LTE. I quickly found out Android Wear is one of Google's ugly step children (along with Android TV, etc.), that gets little love. It killed the one feature I use most on a smartwatch: adding to lists (Grocery, Trip, House Stuff, etc.) via voice. No longer can Android Wear add items to various lists in Google Keep. In fact Google Keep was ripped away from Android Wear and replaced with a single list: Google Assistant Shopping List. Shop at more than one store? Sorry, can't do that. But you CAN order overpriced crap from Google Express Shopping. I will never own another Android Wear anything.

The notch is only visible if you zoom the video, which also crops it. If you watch videos in their native aspect ratio, as they should be viewed, then the notch is not visible. Of course a lot of folks will zoom anyway because they want bigger, and the notch may drive them crazy. Personally I don't like watching video on a small screen. I'd rather watch on my iPad or on the television. For those who want to watch video on smartphones I'm sure the Note 8 makes for a very nice experience.

The stylus and bigger screen are choices that matter to you, but not to me. As for FaceID: The dot projector technology itself is much bigger than unlocking your phone or emoting through animoji, but of course it will take a couple of years before the potential is realized in a way that turns it into a feature used by many devices, but new technology often starts with proof of concept basic use cases. The obvious usage is for 3D scanning of any object for use in 3D modeling or printing applications, but a rear facing dot projector would be more useful for that. Sure there are privacy issues, but the same can be said for so much of the technology we embrace. Remember that the Note 8 offers facial recognition as well, and you can bet many will use it. I rely on Google for a ton of services, but I have more faith in Apple when it comes to more sensitive data or privacy concerns.

Spread your paragraphs out dude. Very hard to read and reply to your points like that

If you are somebody who wants all their major needs on your phone then yes note 8 is a great option as it’s a great productive device.

If you have the x you likely have other devices where it can do more productive tasks. So does one person need to do so much productivity on just one device? Most don’t. The s pen is great to have but stuff I would use that for I would use on my iPad for such work.

As I said though note 8 is for a certain market. It hasn’t sold well as not everybody wants that kind of device. Doesn’t mean it’s not a great device.

I’m sorry but egosystem is still below par on Samsung. Their flagship phones are what stands out but other Devices aren’t on the same level really as the iPad, MacBook Pro for example.

Samsung are only going to improve though and they have made the jump in recent years by a good distance.

You will likely see the plus version of the x next year which for many will be perfect for those not keen on the x

But you see there lies most of the problem.

Samsung is giving you a device which enables you to do whatever you want with it. They are saying here you go, go do as you please, you now have all the tools you could ever want in the one device.

You want to use it to consume media? No problem, just use it. You want it to be creative? No problem, just use it? You want it to be productive? No problem just use it.

Apple on the other hand is telling you how you should you should use your device, and to a certain extent, live your life.

You want to consume basic media? No problem get yourself an iphone. That will be $800-$1000. Cha ching. You'll also need these wireless air pods because you will no longer be listening to wired pods from now on because we said so. $70 please. Cha ching. You want it to be creative? Well you then need an ipad pro. That will be $1,500. Cha ching. Oh and you will need the Apple Pencil for the creativite bit. That will be $150. Cha ching. You want to be productive? Well you need to get a Mac, take your pic, minumum starting price is $3,000, please. Cha ching.

The Note 8 can pretty much do what the iPhone X, the iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and a Mac can do?

No wonder people don't want to leave the Apple ecosystem, they have spent a fortune getting themselves into it.

Bottom line, if anyone thinks that the Note 8 is not a far more superior device to the iphone X, then I don't know what to say to them. It just is.

You’re kind of missing the point. MOST people don’t not want to do everything on one device. The screen for one is not big enough to do real productive things on it. People do not want to be doing real productive tasks on a 6.4 inch device. People want far larger screens than that to do most tasks.

People don’t buy air pods because they are being forced to. People buy them because they are a great product that do exactly what people want and that’s not needing to use wired headphones.

People don’t leave the ecosystem because the other products apple provide are great products. Which is something Samsung can not provide to go with the note 8. The phone is great sure but are other products they do at the same level of what apple provides? No

Not sure how you can say the note 8 is more superior to the iphone x. It’s a a different device and a different OS. How can you say it’s more superior when it runs an OS that to me isn’t that great. There’s a reason they are struggling to sell a million of these phones as they aren’t to everybody’s tastes. This isn’t comparing sports teams here. There’s no way to say whats for sure is better than the other. It depends on the type of device you want and what software you want to use.

The note 8 hasn't sold 1 million units yet? Wow

Whyd you feel the need to tell us? Or were you just looking to validate your purchase with other people on the Apple forum. Im sure there are Android forums for this. Just curious.
