I'm gonna say that I agree with Apple on this one. I've gotta say, seeing the real deal now, to me the phone is way more striking when you see the content go edge to edge, and actually see the corner radius along the entire perimeter of the phone. When I see mock ups try to hide the notch, the effect is far less striking to me. There is something actually impressive about seeing such defined curves following the perimeter. When you hide the notch, you lose that effect entirely.

Jony is that you? :)

And everyone will forget about the notch once they get their iPhone, just like they did with the camera bump, regardless of placement.

Would you forget about a big notch in your TV every time you watch a movie? It's difficult when a bit of content is missing . I do spend no time looking at the back of my phone so comparing this to the camera bump, is not appropriate , as a case fixes the issue. Nothing fixes this notch

What if I said if it bothers you that much you can .. i dunno... not buy it?

Dunno..... it comes with animoji and bragging rights..... what's a little notch ....

The more people that complain, the more likely I will be able to pick up an iPhone X on day one! :D

Nope. No correlation between whinging Apple fans....who will pre-order anyway and supply on day one :p

This confirms my concerns.

I have a 6s I bought at its original release, and I will not buy a new iPhone this cycle. I bought a new iPhone annually up through the 6s, on release, btw.

I can't stand the notch. :p The mockup of how it should have been designed would have been much preferable. And I don't see any real reason to go from 6s to the 8.

Blech.
I'm an original 6s owner as well. I can't decide between a new 6s or an SE. What a time to be alive...

The iPhone X aspect ratio is 2.165:1, so it is obvious that 16:9 video (and 1.85:1 movies) can be pillarboxed. That hides the notch.

But what about 2.35:1 widescreen movies? I guess, the letterboxing mode is not going to hide the notch?

Given the iPhone X's design was leaked months before it was unveiled, many people wondered how Apple would choose to approach the notch housing the device's new TrueDepth front camera and facial recognition system.

Now that the iPhone X is official, we know the answer. Apple's new human interface guidelines for the device advise developers to embrace the notch by ensuring the layout of their apps fill the entire screen. In fewer words, Apple doesn't want developers to hide the notch or swipe indicator by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen.

I actually like the one on the left where they don't use the space on either side of the notch, but also expand the display to the very bottom.

But I mean jesus who is Apple to dictate how developers design their apps for the phone when all of their stock apps have so much freaking empty white space, gigantic UI elements, and no customizability.

Can anyone post or point me to a post comparing what a standard app will look like that's not optimized for the ears and when it is? I heard we are moving back to black boxes if the app is not optimized for the ears. So about 95% of the apps on the store will have black boxes on launch of iPhone x I'm assuming?

The time looks off-center. I want to move it to the left by a mm or so.

Yup, I completely agree. The volume indicator or pause button on the lock screen when music is playing on iOS 11 GM looks a bit off center too.

What does the notch bring to the table? The time and other symbols could have been moved below and made it straight across with no loss in useable screen. Plenty of space above the mail icon and the camera icon to put the time and stuff.

Purely for marketing reasons. It makes it easy to identify that it is an iPhone. Otherwise it would look too similar to LG and Samsung devices.

I, for one, find the notch charming. Part of it also has to do with the curved screen as well. By embracing the notch, you get a unique device design that was formed with function in mind.

I'm guessing that in a year or two they'll be able to put all those sensors under the display. It'll be touted (fairly) as an amazing innovation and they'll pair it up with going to a straight edged design--truly eliminating the bezel.

But for now, it's ugly as sin.

The missing battery %? Will a software update squeeze it in?
Maybe like pressing the time to get the carrier info, you'll be able to get the battery percentage by tapping the battery icon? If not, maybe Apple could add that because I don't think there's enough room for both alongside the wifi and signal bars.

Wait - surely we can get rid of the swipe indicator during videos and games?! Personally I might like to get rid of it all the time.

How is it controversial? Why would they cut the notch out and not utilize it? They would be morons to do that.

I see all this BS marketing by other companies about "bezel-less" edge to edge phones and Apple comes out and actually does it. This is the first phone with as little bezels as possible. Every other phone has wasted space. The only bezels on the iPhone X are absolutely necessary as it's not possible to put cameras through a display.

Actually S8/note8 have less bezel than the iphone Screen body ratio... so thats not a valid point

They should just have put stuff like wifi bar, time, bluetooth, .. in there on a black (OLED!) background.
Now it simply looks retarted AND is disfunctional for landscape apps
