As long as the Max battery holds out and Apple is not offering much more than a 3 lenses camera in the iPhone 11 and a
Qualcomm modem upgrading becomes questionable
Keep in mind that in 2020 the iPhone will most likely have 5G and perhaps a different design. So this would be a minor upgrade in 2019 as far as we know
There’s no right answer. To ‘should I upgrade or not’. The best answer is whatever makes you happy

Doubt I will get the iPhone that comes out this year

I might just upgrade from my X and get an XS if I can get it at a good price, or even a used XS if in good condition / warranty etc

Purely because
1. 64GB is a struggle for me - 256GB will be my next size
2. I fancy a change and getting the white iPhone as bored of the Space Grey colour I have had for the last 4 years now

Will only get the 11 if there are features which really pull me in, and right now I don’t see anything coming that will entice me to get the new iPhone

Love my Xs and keeping it for at least another cycle. The loss of 3D Touch is what concerns me the most and no matter how how good the camera or extra battery capacity I don’t plan to upgrade. I’m more excited for the 2020 model.

fast forward September 2019:

about 80% of people in this topic will still upgrade to one of the new iPhones after seeing the iPhone Keynote.

This happens about every single year.

Rinse.And.Repeat.

;)

I doubt the percentage is anywhere near that high. There’s been a big shift here on MR in recent years and it’s a stark change to a few years ago where everybody was buzzing for the new iPhone. Phones have gotten too good to be throwaway after a year these days.

I previously posted that it just depended on some things but now I’m leaning more toward no.

I really don’t want to feel ripped off spending a bunch of money on a new iPhone and the only difference i can tell in daily use is if I turn it around and look at the camera, albeit pretty darn hideous according to the renders.

But of course we shall see. Might be totally new. Something grand. Some ridiculous feature that I badly want.

Can’t really underestimate Apple.

Unless the XI has the best camera ever put on a phone there's no reason to upgrade to it from a X. No 3D Touch is another reason. It's even less compelling than the Xs and XS Max.

Given Apples trajectory with camera upgrades, I would be slated to say that the ‘triple lens camera’ will probably be the best camera they’ve ever offered on any iPhone, simply because of the technological advancements it will offer and of course Apples will claim it will be the best camera they have ever offered in any iPhone.

If you have an X you have a Qualcomm if you have an XS you have intel.

The settlement with QUALCOMM just happened with Apple so for the 2019 phone it’s too late and still be going with Intel for 11.

The ATT/T-Mobile have Intel basebands. The Verizon/Sprint/SIM Free have Qualcomm basebands.

Paying in full ATT/T-Mobile iPhone just got you an unlocked Intel based iPhone.

I had the X for 18 months before upgrading to the XS Max in March. I still have my X and still love it except for the smaller screen. I’m happy with my XS Max, and won’t upgrade until 2020, when Qualcomm is back in the iPhone and I plan on switching from T-Mobile to Verizon for the bigger work discount.

T-Mobile will not match your work discount up to $30.

Not enough innovation to upgrade...we’ve reached point of saturation. Used to upgrade yearly.

Now my second phones the pixel 3, which is great for pictures and different. I like both.

Future will be foldable phons though it hasn’t gotten a good start.

They just take $15 dollars off. Verizon will take 25% off my bill.

$15 if single line. $30 if more than one line.

I just e-chatted with Verizon today for kicks and giggles, and they said they are no longer doing discounts on the Above, Beyond, Go Unlimited plans. Only "shared" plans.

Unless you are into photography big time, seems like it would be overwhelmingly better to wait for the 2020s (or unless you update every year anyway)? Only real mooted improvement seems to be the triple camera, whereas next year you will get that anyway, as well as a full redesign (smaller notch?), under screen Touch ID, laser focused 3D camera, 5G, an all OLED lineup/ new sizes (if you value those). Quite a big leap there!

Even if you are into photography, the X is still such a great camera. Yes, maybe night shots are not as good, but man if you have a good eye, play around w some apps to edit photo, you can make them look really good.

My X was new in fall 2018.

I bought and returned 2 Maxes due to very poor connectivity on cellular, Bluetooth and WiFi.

I was able to buy a new X at Best Buy and went to a perfectly working phone again.

I cannot say for sure that the Intel modems in the Maxes were the problem. But everything else was the same - same carrier, same iOS and same SIM card.

My X has the Qualcomm modem and works the way it’s supposed to.

I will likely sit out 2019 and wait until 2020. And when I do get a new phone, it won’t be on launch day. Too much of a pain in the butt dealing with Apple acting like there was no problem with the Maxes that weren’t working properly.

I wish I’d returned my XS during the return window. I’ve lived with less than good connectivity and “get by” 70% of the time. Never see less than 2 bars signal on VZW but have frequent data loss issues. I’m 20 miles outside Atlanta. We have reasonably good tower coverage. This antenna design is just not good. Or maybe the modem. I’ll be hopeful next iPhone is better and sell this one or downgrade to an X. Or maybe bust outta the ecosystem and go android for awhile.
