How minor of drops? If you have a skin, as long as it covers the corners (that's important!) you will protect against scratches. depending on the drop, you may still get damage. the last couple of years i've used glass screen protectors. i've had to change them a couple of times during the year of owning the phone because of drops that caused cracks (but the screen itself was fine!)

for several years prior to last year i just used a skin and the worst thing that happed to my phone was the corner skin got messed up... the phone itself was fine!

if you are rougher on your phone you are going to want a thin case... unfortunately (or fortunately) there are a LOT of choices for thin cases...

as far as skins, bestskinsever (best skins ever) .com was a good company to deal with. stay away from slick wraps! they have a ton of sales, but then they claim they get busy and you may get the skin in a few months...

i've used phantonskinz in the past, too. great company but i switched from them strictly based on their corners (they may have changed... i haven't looked yet this year!

Thanks for the info! I don't think a skin will do it for me sadly, as I do expect that drops from 1m/3ft on various surfaces will be unavoidable.. if you have info on thin cases that wrap nicely to a matching screen protector, I'm all ears! (or eyes, as it were).

Update from my end: I ended up ordering the iCarez 3D screen protector (same for X & XS) and the Totallee clear soft case (new for XS). Will keep this thread posted as to how they fit together when I received them (and the phone!) next week.

has anyone who used the install tray for the icarez 3d ended up with micromarring/scratching of the stainless (especially on silver) from the tray itself?

Interested to see photos & whether the black borders cover the screen at all & how it handles the case (lifting & gap).

Anybody else order a zagg from Best Buy and now they are like "oh yeah this isn't going to be here in time...we will cancel it if it's not here by October 20th".

Now what to do?!

UPDATE: I received my iPhone XS (regular size, not Max) this morning.
The first I did was install the iCarez 3D screen protector, which was a breeze with the installation tray, then add the Totallee clear case.

RESULTS: they fit very well together indeed! The case would probably rise slightly above the phone without the screen protector, but with the iCarez installed they are basically flush.
The screen protector actually sits a tad bit higher, so the swipe motions at the side and bottom edges feel very smooth - not 100% smooth like the bare phone, but very close such that the case doesn't bother me at all - it's almost like there is no protection, but I am reassured there is in case I drop the phone.
Only weird thing is that the iCarez screen protector's speaker opening sits a little higher than the phone's speaker opening (which could be because it was designed for iPhone X and the XS has a slightly different opening, who knows) - but so far no issues hearing phone calls through it.

Anyway, enough text from me - here are there photos you've been waiting for!

Ok cool. Thanks for the pics. Looks nice & sleek.

Looks like you've lost the lay on the table feature of the case - I just kept it, only because my case' corners bulge out slightly more than the Belkin Screen Protector I have.

How are the black borders on yours - check out the sides & let us know if the Screen Protector's black borders encroach the screen at all? From one photo, it looks they're fine, at least along the sides?

Also, with your misaligned speaker hole - I think I may know what's happened...with mine, I followed the instructions, but it looks as if the screen wasn't perfectly set/taped in the box & as a result, my screen was placed slightly lower than it should've been....Yours, through no fault of your own, may've been pushed up a bit - you can verify this by checking the lower edge to see if it's higher than it should be (it may be encroaching the low edge of the screen).
Or
You may be right if this is an "X" Screen Protector you've purchased, then it may be slightly different to the XS. Either way, if it doesn't bother you, then all good.

iCarez 3D protector. Installed it Friday, phone fell in between my seat in my car and somehow cracked... I emailed them maybe I’ll get another one in the mail. Doesn’t seem like its much protection. Wasn’t like I dropped it hard or anything.
They are not the greatest. I bought one for my iPad a year ago and it cracked easily.

The black borders don’t seem to be encroaching the screen - but then again this is my first edge-to-edge phone (previous one was iPhone 8) so I’m not 100% sure I’m losing any pixels.. how could one tell whether it’s encroaching at all?

As for the earpiece opening misalignment, the screen protector has the same flush on both top and bottom edges of the phone, so I don’t think I installed it too high - must be an issue with this specific screen protector.. oh well, as long as all the functions still work! It’s also barely noticeable so no worries.

Does this solution feel like it adds “bulk” to the phone? Most cases are driving me nuts because the XS as it is feels perfect in my hand... but then feels too big and bulky when putting a case on it.

Here are a couple of ways -

Open up YouTube in Portrait mode. Pause video (let ad finish), then push the red timestamp dot to both the extreme left & right edges & check to see if portions of the dot are lost under the black border of the screen protector.

Another way is to download a wallpaper that contains a thin outline of the X screen...

& temporarily set it as both Lock/Home screen, then check to see if all of the outline is visible.

I also found the Music App 'Now Playing' Tab's left & right edges stretch wider than most Apps & is more obvious be seen to be covered by the border.

Felt the same with the Apple Silicon case. Great protection, but added too much width.

So replaced it with an ultra-minimalist side-free case with allows better grip around the back & reachability across the screen for one-handed use. + you get to admire the side bezels & use the actual buttons of the phone.

The top & bottom are both covered though. & you get lay on the table design for back & front, although a glass Screen Protector needs to be thin (0.33mm max) for the front to retain lay on table design.

Do you feel like the phone would be protected now with this solution should you happen to drop it?

Unless I'd be unlucky enough for it to fall side-first onto a bump, then I feel it's good enough.

The extra grip you gain reduces your chances of dropping it, as you can wrap your fingers right around the phone & the soft (almost rubber-like) corners also give your hands something to cling to. Corners are also soft, & appear capable of absorbing some shock should the phone land on them.

Did you notice any light scratches on the stainless steel sides after using the installation tray?
This seems to be my big worry now. I have the space grey and as much as I love the XS Max, I’m really unsure about how easy the sides are going to be prone to scratching
[doublepost=1537676881][/doublepost]Would be great if we could get a list of cases and screen protectors that best work together. Remember the odd issue of cases forcing the edges up on screen protectors in the past

Well, my Belkin lasted 2 days. My phone slipped 2 feet onto carpet and the top corner is now cracked. It has already begun to spider web down the side.

I guess I will be out today getting a new screen protector. I think my local t-mobile should has the pure gear one. I would get another welkin but the closest apple store is 40 minutes away from me
