I said the Note 8 display is very nice...but you're not going to tell me it is sharper looking to your eye than even the 8 Plus 1080p LCD display. Sorry, it's just not. And PenTile is to blame for that.

It is sharper looking to the eye than the iphone 8 plus. I don't care if you believe it or not. Keep your false fantasies of not believing the note 8 is the sharpest display available next to the sony xperia XZ premium. Then you have the nerve enough to blame pentile when the iphone X is pentile...pentile and subpixel arrangements have made screens more sharp and clear. Even the Huawei Mate 10 uses a IPS LCD with pentile subpixels to create a more sharper and vibrant display.

You seem to have a lot of pent of anger and bitterness. I cannot imagine not owning a single current Apple product, yet still spending as much time as you do whining about them on an Apple centric forum. Tells us all we need to know really.

And you was not part of that conversation sir....and no. I was properly responding back.

Okay, this conversation is over because based on the quoted comment, you have no clue what you're talking about.

Also, if you read my post, Apple calibrates at the subpixel level for the OLED display as a sort of combatant to the PenTile subpixel issue.

Its actually over because you are in LaLa land over the iPhone X display. When the displaymate review comes out, you will get my drift.
[doublepost=1509470896][/doublepost]And here is the first evidence of what a reviewer thinks of the iPhone X screen:

Is this the best OLED screen?

This is not going to sound scientific at all, but my impression is that the iPhone X’s 5.8-inch OLED screen isn’t OLED-y enough.

What I mean by that is that the colors aren’t as saturated as what you’ll find on the Galaxy Note 8, for example. When I watch the same Wonder Woman trailer on both phones, the greens on the Note 8’s screen popped a lot more, while looking more muted on the iPhone X. (I'll be following up with comparisons with the Pixel 2 XL.)

Apple will tell you that it strived to achieve the most realistic colors possible, and that’s borne out by the iPhone X’s Delta-E reading of 0.27. (A score of 0 is perfect.) But I actually prefer the punchier hues on Samsung’s phones. The iPhone X’s panel reproduced 128.6 percent of the color gamut, compared to 204.8 percent for the Note 8. (We will retest to confirm, but that’s a big difference for two OLED panels)

The 5.8-inch display also gives you less viewing area than the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus, because the iPhone X’s screen has a narrower aspect ratio. I noticed this immediately when taking photos with both phones side by side; the iPhone 8 Plus gave me a much bigger viewfinder to preview my shots.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad Apple finally embraced OLED, and the iPhone X’s screen (2436 x 1125 pixels) is sharper than the iPhone 8 Plus (1920 x 1080). Apple also includes HDR support for delivering more colors and better contrast in movies — including flicks in iTunes. And there’s TrueTone for automatically adjusting the white balance of the screen based on ambient lighting, which can make reading easier on the eyes. But this screen doesn’t seem best in class.

In the TechCrunch review, you get a very clear shot of the screen differences. I think the X screen is way way better than the 8 Plus. I am so happy I don't have to go back. See this for an example.

That’s false. A true RGB arrangement has the best sharpness when comparing a phone with the same resolution.

CNET is saying the oled display isn't that much better than the LCD iPhones and the other reviewers are saying it's better but no one is saying it's a night and day difference which is what I see when I compare displays on Samsung phones and iPhones. I am a little worried about this because the bezelless oled is why I bought an iPhone X.

Honestly, we shouldn't expect a night and day difference in actual image quality (we should notice a considerable difference w/ HDR video content though vs non-HDR on an older iPhone). The older LCD iPhones already had fantastic displays. Areas where it should look better is contrast, HDR video and sharpness. The color will be calibrated similarly to previous iPhones.

Oh look jamesrick ruining another thread. Mods need to put him out his misery.

Doesn't like Apple products but is on a forum where you discuss them. Makes sense.

I blocked him. It’s been wonderful.

Look at the picture I posted a few up. Huge difference. No worries at all.

Are we still getting caught up in the PPI crap? PPI does not matter! At a normal viewing distance your eyes cannot distinguish the individual pixels (This was achieved way back in the iPhone 4 era.)

So unless you’re going to use your phone a centimetre away from your face I wouldn’t worry about the PPI of the screen. OLED offers deep blacks and better colour replication. The PPI of 458 is more than acceptable, you will not see any pixels even close up. The most important thing is that it is a quality panel. Resolution and PPI don’t matter as much as the quality of the panel. This is as bad as the camera Megapixel debate. It’s all about the quality of the optics.

The bottom line is this is the phone that Apple has produced, for better or worse. No amount of reviews/complaints are going to change the notch, the oled screen, the bezels etc etc etc. I'm with everyone in that the money spent and the first redesign in 3 years, I want this thing to be amazing and completely new and perfect. It may work out like that and it may not, the fact remains we're stuck with this or the SE/7/8/+'s. Not bashing anyone or anything like that and I get we're here to have a discussion. I myself will be departing and waiting for Friday like a lot of you, only to return next year to join in on the preorder fun. Hope you guys enjoy the phones!

iPhone x has the same brightness as previous iPhones (625 cd/m2).

This is the only thing that disappoints me while viewing the specs of the screen. I hoped it'd be brighter than the 7/8 series. The Note 8 is double the brightness of the 7/8/X.

It won’t be a true PPI of 458 because of the pentile display. So it could look slightly softer than the 8 plus.

I understand the notion of not really caring about the little details, and usually I'd fully agree. The only reason why I'd nitpick at all is just how resistance apple has been towards OLED and the price point of the phone. I was hoping for crazy sharpness and cutting edge OLED tech. I know its going to be a great screen, but when I'm spending that much on a phone I like knowing that I'm getting the best of the best. Not a deal breaker at all, just a minor disappointment. Still excited to try it out on Friday and see how it compares overall to my 7+, but at the end of the day there are other phones with better screens on the market right now.

Just because a screen is over saturated doesn’t mean it’s better.
Look how Sony does the processing on their oled tv this year with a LG panel. Colors are different and more “Sony”.
It’s the same thing here. Apple could of chose to copy the overly bright colors of Samsung but it chose a more natural look which they've always done.
Doesn’t make it worse or better. It’s an opinion on what you like more...

PPI is actually fairly irrelevant. SPPI (sub pixels per inch) is far more important.

That's utter nonsense. There's no such thing as "not OLED-y enough." If you calibrate an OLED correctly, you won't end up with Samsung's ridiculously over-saturated display. Even my home LG 65" 2017 OLED looks nothing like Samsung's out-of-the-box phone displays - thank goodness. OLED is designed for better viewing angles, better pixel response times, and much better contrast - than LCD. That's it.

Have you read the reviews? The panel is not off-the-shelf but has been manufactured to Apple‘s very specific demands and beyond that Apple does a ton of custom optimizations. Everyone who has seen it says it‘s fantastic. You‘ll get the best of the best, just as you wanted.

i own both the Note 8 and iPhone 8 plus. The Note 8 looks sharp with great color saturation. It POPs over the iPhone screen. However, when you look VERY close to the screen, you can see the DOTS on the Note 8 while the iPhone 8 plus screen you can't. I remember when I tried the (forget what it's called off hand that you put the phone in and put it over your eyes), with my S7 Edge. Those dots made it look really nasty.

I've always, always preferred iPhone displays no matter if others tell me Samsung is better. I had OLED since the Nexus One and Samsung Focus and never understood the big deal with them. Artificial, oversaturated colors. All hype to me.

But I believe the X's dispay is going to be its biggest selling point and most owners' favorite feature. iOS already had a cartoony-looking UI but things will just pop out even better. For me, I could rank it...

Display, 9/10
Gesture Control, 9/10
Cameras, 8.5/10
Face ID, 8/10
Design, 8/10 (front), 5/10 (back)
Animoji, 7/10

Overall, 8.5/10. Initially, it will be a 9 or 10 for many here but that's with honeymoon phase, prisoner of the moment intoxication.

Even the current phones I have, I rarely give them a 9/10 score from the start. Takes time to understand their strengths and weaknesses. You won't figure it all out in 1-2 weeks. It's like courting a female. Takes time.

Which display mode do you use with your Note 8?
