No no it’s not sharp as in getting cut. But it certainly isn’t smooth. Especially not how it was described in the keynote as seamless etc etc. definitely there is a ridge like feeling “sharp” define it however you want between the glass and the steel band. Even if I ran my nail from the glass to the band it would certainly stop and feel the resistance. 1000 phone this is... It should be consistent with what people feel across the board not some have smooth and some don’t. Also don’t even get me started on the screen lol which I’ve commented on other threads. As I type this on my iPhone X the keyboard has blue tint while the top half has yellow tint.

edges don’t have the same buffering as the 7 or 7+. It’s not really a big deal. It’s more of an oversight by Apple

Definitely minimal. Even for those who do notice it outside of a tech forum, it's likely something they put off as an afterthought.

Space Gray and i do have it. What bother me is that it catches my beard ...

I'll wait a few more weeks and check the problem with the warranty service :)

Some of the ones in the Apple store had a bit of a different feel to them but couldn't detect any visible difference

I started a thread a couple of days ago that I think describes this phenomenon. There's a subtle unevenness between the steel band and glass back. For me, it's more on one side than the other. My girlfriend's X has a smooth transition between glass and steel. But manufacturing variances are to be expected.

Don't get me wrong, I love my X, but can't help but feel the sharp edges where the stainless steel band joins the front and back glass. I didn't feel this on my Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus. It was totally smooth all around. For reference, I have the silver. Just hope I don't have a defective unit.

The silver. Models in the store I played with, were sharp.

My space grey is quite smooth.

My recommendation is get a case. Or going naked, get the SG.

I have had the iPhone X silver since launch day and didn’t notice this, but today I took it out of the case to clean and the light caught the left side and I noticed it looked rough compared to the right. Sure enough sliding my nail down it it’s rough and catches. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. I’m debating on going to the Apple store and returning but not sure I want to go through replacing and buying another $40 screen protector. I tried to take a picture to show Apple but it won’t show.

All my phones since the 6 style has had these. Some more pronounced than others. Man I thought I was picky. I get made fun of for pointing out stuff like this, but this group makes me feel normal. lol

It is amazing to think about the most minuscule little features that will be pointed out on a tech forum, as to where someone wouldn't even notice some of these indicators outside this website or even address it. But I also understand Apple devices have a different level of expectation for some, especially given the price point for what we pay.

Same here, I can see it on the left side, and feel it (as it’s right where my thumb is if I hold my phone in my left hand, right below the volume buttons). It’s like the steel didn’t get fully polished/smoothed out along the top edge in that spot. I checked a display model at Best Buy yesterday and it felt much smoother than mine.

Haven’t decided if it’s worth exchanging or not. I mean on one hand, I feel like I’m being too picky. But on the other hand, it’s a $1,150 phone...

I noticed on day one that the edge isn’t as smooth in some places as it is in others.

I’m not even thinking of returning it, as it’s only very slight, and everything else is great with the device. However, I did break out the macro lens just out of interest after reading other complaints.

It looks to me like the problem lies (at least for me) with the gasket between the glass and the metal. In some places it has a rough edge at the top.

The first picture shows a nice smooth edge to the gasket, but the rest show some rough edges.

Described visually what I couldn't actually see when I felt some differences at the Apple Store

I noticed the difference immediately between the X I got on launch day and my previous jet black 7 Plus. Just thought it was a characteristic of the stainless steal band until now reading this tread. I hate switching phones and making a big deal out of something so that’s insignificant, so not sure what I’ll do. Unfortunately now that I know it’s not an issue on every phone, it will wear on me.

The pictures I posted were all from the same side of the device. On that side, the gasket is smooth at the top of the device, and rough at the bottom. The other sides also have smooth and rough sections.

My guess is, that devices that are 100% smooth all the way round will be the minority, but most people who buy the X either won’t notice, or won’t care.

My hand is in a lot of pain when I use my X for extended periods of time! Anyone else? I'm really surprised that for a $1000+ device, they'd not do a better job of having one continuous smooth surface.

I have the same issue on the left side and top/bottom of my space grey X. Other examples from friends and at the store (both colors) are less pronounced compared to mine. I went back and checked my 7 and 6s and they actually have the same issue, although also less pronounced, and of course only on the front which doesn't rest on my hands much when I use the phone so I don't feel anything.

It's pretty annoying and it takes away from the quality feel of the device, especially since it's not even all the way around. My guess is that the metal band wasn't rounded / polished enough in some areas. The fit seems pretty even though, so I'm not sure.

Anyway, it bugs me but I don't think I'd get a significantly better one as a replacement so I will probably keep it. This is the first iPhone I have had in years that has a good / uniform screen, so I also don't want to get back into that lottery.

I have sharp edges only at the edge of the bottom of the screen where the lightning port is. The other edges are smooth-ish just a pity the sharp edge lies right where my fingers rest.

So not fair! Lol

You returned or exchanged? Did you stay with silver or go with space gray?
i returned it. went back to my white iPhone 7. the space gray might solve that problem, or a different silver one might, i don't know...but i just wasn't happy enough with the phone to justify the cost, and that was only one of the things i didn't like. i'm thrilled with my decision so far, which is not at all how i expected to feel.

I decided to pop into the Genius Bar today and ask them about this. Before I did, I checked out all the display models. All of them were smooth apart from one small area on one handset.

Short story short, they replaced it with a white box device which is 100% smooth all the way around. I know some wouldn't be happy with a white box device, but I've never had an issue with a "refurb" in the past, so it's not an issue for me.
