I decided to pop into the Genius Bar today and ask them about this. Before I did, I checked out all the display models. All of them were smooth apart from one small area on one handset.

Short story short, they replaced it with a white box device which is 100% smooth all the way around. I know some wouldn't be happy with a white box device, but I've never had an issue with a "refurb" in the past, so it's not an issue for me.

At this point into the release, I highly doubt you have a re-furbished X. Apple pulls stock to use specifically for their "white box" replacements.

It’s definitely interesting to see what people notice on phones. I never noticed the calculator bug until I read about it on this forum. I’m a picky person when it comes to my purchases, I do wonder if I’d notice all the little flaws if I didn’t read about it on forums and news articles..

Exactly what I told the girl, but she insisted the are "remanufactured" using parts from other phones. I didn't argue...just accepted the device. :)

Sad isn't it. Even it it were a "re-furb" as people like to call them, anything you can touch has been replaced, the unit has been inspected more so than a production unit off the line, I wouldn't think twice about it.

I fixed mine today!

I bought this Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish at the store today to remove some scratches from a drop, as well as the scratches that have accumulated on my series 1 watch. Then decided to try to get rid of my “rough” edge too.

I put blue tape on the front and back glass, just to be safe, so only the stainless steel was exposed. Then I dabbed a tiny bit of polish onto a microfiber cloth, and used my fingernail to run the cloth back and forth along the edge of the steel (top edge right before the seal is where mine was rough). Now it is super smooth! Also worked perfectly for the scratches. I am very pleased.

My silver 256 has a similar feeling, and when I brought it to my local Apple store to demonstrate it to a sales person, they acknowledged it shouldn’t be like that. We compared it to the floor models and they were all smooth except for another silver 64 display model. None of the SG display models had this feeling to them.

At any rate, I exchanged it for a white box unit. The replacement feels smooth, but had some grubby fingerprints along the band and on the screen with a few micro scratches when held up against the light. I’ll deal with those over the weird edge feeling I was experiencing. My silver X had already accumulated some scratches on the screen and band, but hey, it’s a phone...

Did you have scratches on the stainless steel band itself? The concern I have with my 256 silver is the edge (or seam) between the stainless steal and the glass (both the backside and the front screen) is pronounced and can be felt. With my 7 Plus they were perfectly smooth. I have a genius appointment on Thursday but I'm not sure I will keep it. Other than this concern, I have no other issues, and I honestly would hate to get a replacement with any micro scratches on the screen.

Yes, on the band itself. It’s not noticeable at a glance and honestly my returned unit had accumulated more in a weeks time without a case. These things don’t typically bother me, though.

Just noticed on my new device that although the gasket is nice and smooth now, I actually have a tiny gap between the gasket and the metal frame just large enough to slot the corner of a piece of paper in, all the way along the left and top edges.

Still prefer this to the rough feeling I had on the last device, so I won’t be returning. I highly doubt it compromises the water resistance at all, as I suspect all the water resistant seals are inside, and that gasket has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I am not seeing this at all. I took off my case for the first time since I got my X and wow, I forgot how smooth the phone is. Feels amazing in the hand. I just wish my OCD would let me go caseless.

Chatted with Apple Care today. Getting a replacement in 2-3 days. They wanted to charge me $29 for express shipping, but I managed to get that waived. Was reassured that the replacement will be a brand new unit in sealed original box. Hope the replacement has smooth edges!

***UPDATE***
Getting replacement phone tomorrow! They overnighted it! :D

Don't get me wrong, I love my X, but can't help but feel the sharp edges where the stainless steel band joins the front and back glass. I didn't feel this on my Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus. It was totally smooth all around. For reference, I have the silver. Just hope I don't have a defective unit.
Yeah I just got my new iPhone X and Black and I can feel sharp edges around the stainless steel where meets the screen I feel like this is a defect since some of the other phones I felt did not have this.

Received my replacement yesterday. It's not much better. I provided feedback with Apple. Also, my replacement was sent in a thin plain white box. I was reassured twice that it would be in an original box. Not happy with Apple at the moment!

Did you send your accessories with the old iPhone ?

Found this thread via google. I bought 2 iPhone X and unpacked mine immediatelly. I noticed the sharp edges, but I figured that it has to be like this. The second phone was unpacked today and it is smooth all round. Feels much better. For this price, I think that this is a disgrace. I have an appointment in the apple store for Monday. Hope for a quick replacement!

They will replace it.

Just don’t accept a white box refurb phone if you are within your 14 day return period.

Tell them you want a new phone. Just make sure to have your box and accessories.

If they refuse, return the phone and order a new one.

I’m really just scared about the display... people on this thread don’t really know about oled problems it seems, I’ve been through 5 allle store replacements and the oled screen is always bad, I would teach you guys how to check your screen but the OCD in here is already bad.

I have the silver and I can’t tell where the edge ends and the glass begins unless I use the tips of my fingers and really try to feel for the edge. I definitely can’t discern it while holding the phone at all.

Almost every interview with Jony Ive about the iPhone X has a quote from him about the seemless integration between the stainless steel and glass. A sharp edge is definitely a manufacturing defect and should be replaced.

Do not!!! I repeat DO NOT do this with the black model.

Yeah, I wish I had read this earlier. Replaced my phone today with no problems. I just wanted to see when the replacement was made, but got disappointed when I saw the refurbished writing on there. Also, the Serial Number Checker says the iPhone has 64GB storage, when it actually has 256GB, which iTunes also shows. Weird.

Where do they get these refurbushed phones so early in the life cycle? I'm considering to ask for a refund and order a new one. Kind of disappointed by the service here. I mean, you pay a premium price and they give you a used phone? Not cool!

its not refurbished, people just say that because they become refurbished later on.

Its way too early to get a refurbished phone, those are brand new phones. Maybe January they will be refurbished. However, bad news is, once you get a warranty device you loose your 14 day return window. Thats why its better to return not exchange.

I just noticed this ever so slightly near the lighting port on my silver X since I dropped with on the floor with my Apple leather case and was checking for damage. I think I'll settle with it since I've already exchanged it from dust in lens before.

Is there any chance that this "rough edge" can be caused by a drop? I'm guessing if it was a drop damage, it would be much more severe right?

Nice! And one of my favorite car detailing products (though modern cars have very little to polish any longer ... it does a good job on my exhaust tips)

Any before and after pics? (obv. assuming you have another camera :D)
