iPhone X Should Push Apple Ahead of Samsung as World's Largest Smartphone Maker

One is specifically targeting one company (Samsung specifically targeting Apple), the other is a very broad target of a whole platform (Apple targeting the entire PC platform and not any one specific company)

There’s a difference.

In the same respect Apple and iOS are the competing platform

As someone who sees non of the massive profits Apple pockets, I could care less. Having said that, I'm enjoying my iPhone X.

That's really all it comes down to. Is the consumer satisfaction with the product that they're purchasing. Given the price points are not inexpensive, it's about the product that Apple puts out that lasts and is well-made.

Putting them side by side in this picture does kinda show the S8 is the better looking phone, purely because it doesn't have that idiotic notch at the top. Renders the screen next to it pretty much useless.
That *is* the point the notch gives extra screen rather than takes away. The galaxy has full on bezels top and bottom

Samsung's flagships don't sell well anymore. They also don't leave them in the market for three plus years like Apple does. The fall of Samsung's mobile division started way before Note7 fiasco.

Samsung peaked about 2013 with the Galaxy S4 which sold the most for them. Then by 2014, the Chinese like Huawei/Honor, OPPO/OnePlus, and Xiaomi started to undercut them.

This is Samsung's top seller now.

J2 Prime is not a flagship. Samsung had over a 30% marketshare back in 2013. It now has dipped below 20%. Actually, Samsung's bigger moneymaker will come from the iPhone X. They should be rooting for X to succeed. It will make more money for Samsung than their S8 line.

At least Samsung is diversifying. They are aware the mobile industry may not last forever. I would love to fly in a Samsung rocket ship. I got nothing but love for the South Koreans. I just feel sorry for companies like LG, Motorola, and HTC that never gets respect or don't market properly.

Apple and Samsung have a duopoly in the United States. 45% + 30% but I see it more like 90% wherever I go. At Best Buy, Apple and Samsung have their own table. Essential, KeyOne, Xperia XA, G6, they are left fighting for table scraps and bread crumbs.

From what I see in SoCal -
iPhone - 70%. As high as 90%.
Galaxy - 25%
Other - 5%

iPhone users dominate and dominate. I go to Best Buy and most of their male employees surprise me when most tell me they use Android.

it's rather funny what people call "dated" i.e. outdated when it was fine 2 years ago.

Well yea, things change over time. I actually thought the 7 Plus I bought last year looked dated, but it was my best option when it came to iOS. Now that there are more modern designs out there, it's makes it even more obvious.

Oh my. If you find Sammy's chins outdated, I'd hate to know what you think of Apple's chins on the iPhone 8.:)

Both look outdated to me. My old 7 Plus looked outdated when I bought it.

Exactly.

Apple obviously needs hardware at the top of the screen for the earpiece, camera and FaceID sensors.

But instead of wasting space across the entire top of the phone... they put everything in the middle and flanked it with two extra screen areas for info. You're right... your clock and battery icon don't have to invade your app area anymore.

Samsung, on the other hand, has a bezel at the top that stretches ALL the way across... thus pushing your clock, battery and notifications into the main screen area.

Oh... and they have a second bezel at the bottom of the phone... that actually does nothing! It's blank!

Samsung Galaxy S8! Two bezels! Top and bottom!

How come no one ever talks about that? :p

Because its a moot point maybe? My status bar does not invade my app area at all

See my unedited screen grabs, on Android you have an immersive mode available, swipe down from top or up from bottom and the status and nav bars appear, open app or browse and they vanish leaving me with the full 6.3 inches of screen real estate to look at my apps with and totally reduces any possibility of burn in, and the bezels to be fair are tiny top and bottom so the phone is not much taller

Choice is really a wonderful thing isn't it.Screenshot_20171109-173949.jpg Screenshot_20171109-174136.jpg

And before any one goes on the assault, i actually think the iphone x is one cracking looking phone

Good for Apple, not so good for customers. It means they're going to continue selling expensive phones since X is a success.
This year we have 8 and 8+ at the usual price points, while X is a more expensive model. But what if they sell their "base" new model at $999 in the future?
They’ll always have a “lower end” (read: least years) model for people who can’t afford the latest. Cutting edge comes at a price, and if the supply demand matches up then that’s the “right” way to do it for Apple.

I think you missed the point a little bit. Your status bar doesn't invade your screen, but your bezels do. For any given size phone, having the notch vs a full bezel offers a little more screen space. It's not grounds for an argument or anything, this is not an assault. Just pointing out that the notch is simply a partial bezel- it allows MORE screen than would've been available without it. Just like your 6.3" screen if it traded one of the full bezels for a notch with some screen area left on the sides. (I noticed you showed a screenshot but not a picture of your phone so I can't see what kind of phone you have).

"Meanwhile, market research firm Canalys estimates the iPhone 8 Plus outpaced the iPhone 8 last quarter with shipments of 6.3 million units and 5.4 million units respectively. Canalys said the iPhone 8 Plus is the first Plus-sized iPhone to out-ship its smaller 4.7-inch sibling in a single quarter."

Please Apple, release a X (plus)... as I wrap up my X "rental" for a return this weekend. The skinny iPhone 5esque X screen is a deal breaker for many... Going back to a true plus sized phone...
I’m getting my X tomorrow. Hope I don’t want to ship it back but if you’re looking for a big screen phone I’ve been using an LG V30 for a month and I love it. The screen is 6 inches if that’s plus enough.

Nope, i deffo got the point, i understand what he said about the bezel providing the area for the icons which is a clever use of space, however it was stated that on a samsung due to the tiny bezel this pushed the status bar down eating into the avaliable screen estate which in fact it does not if you choose to use immersive mode which i appreciate not all do. The phone is a note 8, but i have done this on all the phones ive owned, and no before its asked root is not needed to do this.

And as stated i do like the look of the X and if i was not so into tinkering i would buy one, but alas i am so i wont.

I posted my 8 & 8+ estimates a few days ago (& up on Twitter) ... their total of 11.7M units is just-below my 12.1M unit estimate ... also, they don't mention the 34.5M iPhone 7 units that Apple sold in Sept, starting Sept 12th !

Lol, well I think he was counting a couple of beans when Apple didn’t include a fast charger in with the X. ;) But at least the lightning headphones are in the box. I was pretty ticked off when all us Pixel 2 purchasers got was a usb-c dongle! :p Now that’s counting beans!
I don’t think it’s just Apple being cheap when they only include the 5W charger; the vast majority of users only charge overnight, since they end the day at 20%-60% or whatever. So whether it takes a half hour or two hours to recharge, it’s irrelevant. When they wake up it’s at 100%.

For the 10 or 20% who charge during the day, it’s nice to have fast charging options, but why make everyone pay extra for it? And what waste of resources, to manufacture 150-175 million 12W or 29W or whatever chargers for people who won’t benefit from the faster charging at all. Plus, slow charging is better for the battery.

And Apple, which yes, uses iOS, doesn’t target Samsung. But Samsung does target Apple.

You really can’t see the difference?

In any case, Apple doesn’t give a rats what Samsung does, while Samsung is obsessed with Apple.

The A11 processor, the most advanced mobile processor on the planet. By a mile.

Or the fact the display is calibrated and supported by an OS with color management, making it even better than the same screen in a Samsung Phone.

You are still missing the point. It does not matter how powerful your phone is, if you don't have a good display, it's worthless. I understand the display was designed and optimized by Apple. But for a second, stop and think. Why did Apple go to Samsung to make the display? Aren't they working with LG to build their display. Why not LG, why Samsung.

That should bring up a bigger question. What's Apple's bread and butters, is not the bread and butter for Samsung. Apple makes iPhone. Samsung also makes smartphones. That's the basic difference. Looking at Samsung's history, you would be surprised how resilient Samsung can be. If Apple's iPhone sales decline 2 quarters, you know where the Apple stock will be. Same thing can't say about Samsung. Ask Sony, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag.. what Samsung did to them.

Again, I am not blatant fan of one or the either. My house has all Apple products. I did get burnt once with Motorola Atrix phone. But this time, I took a chance with Galaxy S8. And I have not been disappointed a day yet.

This was in relation to the Mac/PC ads it was said they were targeting the other platform not the companies.. iOS and Apple are the other platform

Fine.

Apple didn’t target Samsung in the I’m a Mac/I’m a PC ad campaign.

Samsung does target Apple in their advertising campaigns.

So now you understand how they’re different, despite how some try to draw a false equivalence.

How are your iPhone X holding up so far? A couple of my friends have one and they already look beat up and they are very careful with their phones..I've seen many reviews that mention this as well..Kinda scary for such an expensive device
I'm happy with mine; I received it on launch day -- though I didn't actually get to open it until after I got home from work. (I actually watched it arrive on my Ring doorbell camera... much to the amusement of my office-mates.)

Upon opening it, it went straight from the box into an Apple case, which had arrived on Tuesday prior to launch... and yes, I've dropped it once already. Hardwood floor in the kitchen from about waist height: no damage -- other than the few minutes that panicking over it took off of my own life expectancy.

The two hardware factors which I think will leave the most lasting impression, are specifically the contrast ratio of that amazing OLED screen, and the blazing fast processor. Those are clearly the areas of improvement that competitors are going to need to focus on.

One non-hardware factor which I think may have the potential to leave an even larger impact on the market as a whole: that price. If Apple really does succeed with this new price bracket for their flagship phone -- as most analysts seem to think they will -- than you can bet that other flagship phones are going to follow suit, and ratchet up their price tags as well.

So regardless of whether you're Team Apple or Team Samsung... you'd better start saving up your pennies.

Not sure how you're turning "Apple might outsell Samsung this quarter, wow, nice job Apple" into "Samsung is doomed and is going out of business! Lulz!". I think the commenters on this site, appreciating Apple's products and the iPhone X, are pleased it's successful because they want continued great products from Apple. I don't think anyone thinks or is saying Samsung is in imminent danger. Also, Samsung's current ads that portray Apple device owners as stupid aren't exactly going to win them sympathy if they miss sales numbers.

Apple is catching up to the competition, and the competition is catching up to Apple. It's been that way for 10 years (in smartphones). Not new info. Apple can't put in every possible new feature every year and competitors can't put in every feature Apple has every year.

You haven't seen people on here bashing Apple competitors or being happy when they have a problem? How long have you been on here?

Your last paragraph I completely agree with. And I would add that I hope Samsung doesn't "put in" every new Apple "feature"... such as the feature where they removed the headphone jack and FPS.

You bought a Note 8? I’m curious, are you happy having to wait until sometime in 2018 to get Oreo? Or that Android P will be the last update you ever get? For a phone that’s close to $1,000 US? It amazes me people will put up with paying flagship prices for a device with a 2 year lifespan and inferior support.

It doesn't bother me to wait for Oreo to 2018, because what I have now does more productive things for me than the iPhone I replaced. And I don't want to go through a half dozen updates like Apple seems to do now to get it right. Many of the iPhone updates over the last few years have focused on silly things I could care less about... like games in messaging, animated poop emojis, etc.. so no great advantage to them. As for how long they will provide updates, they are still providing updates for the Note 4. I'm good with that. I rarely keep a phone past 2 years, and I doubt 90% of the people on here do either. I also didn't pay close to $1000 for the Note 8... no where near it.

That *is* the point the notch gives extra screen rather than takes away. The galaxy has full on bezels top and bottom

Definitely looking at it as the glass is half full with that notch. Anyway you want to spin it... the S8, S8+, and Note 8 have a higher screen to size ratio than the X. And I personally like symmetry. We should be seeing the S9 in a few months and since it took Apple about 4 years to get to the X design, its probably more appropriate to compare the S9 to the X for the next several years.

I’m sure it’s frustrating to be an also-ran in the flagship market segment, but if I were Samsung I’d be a lot more concerned with the Chinese manufacturers than I would be Apple.

They’re fiddling while Rome burns.
