Yea I saw this also. I would imagine this will be a lot of our reactions on November 3rd. I don't think we realize how different of an experience the X will be. Huge upgrade over anything before it.

Agreed...I’m looking forward to this release more than any other, and I’ve been on-board the annual-iPhone-upgrade-train since the first one, haha!!

The edge-to-edge screen, and more importantly the lack of a home button, definitely makes the X the most major redesign since the original iPhone. This phone actually changes the way you have to use your phone.

Well... no...
The 4 was definitely a major redesign.
The 6 and 6 Plus were also major redesigns, with their new screen sizes.
This is definitely the most radical redesign since 2007, though.

Those were big changes, but pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. Yes, the back casing/size changed, but that's really it. Removing the home button and going edge to edge is going to be really significant.

The notch really didn't bother me at first, but I've been so obsessed with the X since the keynote that it's really starting to bug me now.

Kinda like that "pretty" girl that the more you see of her the more a certain quirk she has (physical or otherwise... #dontbethatvain) starts to make you think she "isn't so pretty" after all. Also known as "marriage" ;):p:D.

Still, that notch is really starting to get to me too... I'm starting to think the crazies that jumped all over it were right all along. I really hope they ditch it with the X2.
This is why it's getting to you, it looks like this

You aren't wrong lol...

But alas, it's the "best" iPhone, so the options are either don't buy it (and go with a lesser version), or hope the notch isn't as obtrusive after some time with it.

Anyone that doesn't think the X2's first design goal isn't getting rid of the notch is kidding themselves. It was just another compromise Apple had to make when they couldn't figure out the Touch ID problem. Once they had to put a camera/dot projector/ir light/etc. front facing, they had no choice but to NOTCH UP.

Yuck!

I absolutely think it will stay. Maybe shrink some over the next several iterations but it will stay. If for no other reason than it’s absolutely an immediate identifier of an iPhone in public now. It’s almost like free advertisement.

It may out of necessity (Face ID), but it certainly isn't part of their "all screen" objective.

I have a hunch Apple dislikes it as much as most of us do, but it was necessary to get the phone to market this year.

The notch isn’t a byproduct of FaceID.

It’s a byproduct of slimming bezels and the design Apple went with. It’s obvious they wanted the screen to extend to all 4 corners of the device (something no other phone has done yet, because no one has been able to remove the bottom chin till now.)

The notch would have existed in that design choice (extending to all 4 corners) regardless, due to the fact that even without FaceID there still needs to be a place for the camera, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, ear piece and mic.

Yes and yes...Apple is removing the HOME BUTTON for goodness sake, haha!!

I remember back in 2007 how awesome it was to have a “single point of contact” to get you back to the Home Screen. Then all the functions they added over the years (app switcher, Siri, Touch ID, Apple Pay) that were still easy to invoke. Ten years of muscle memory will have to be undone, haha!! And I for one can’t wait. :D

The first time when you can actually ask why the person is using his sammy upside down when you see iphonex..

xD

This might just my wallet talking but I think I’d rather spend a grand on an iPad Pro 10.5 which has a 120Hz display rather than a first-gen FaceID/iPhone X? I don’t know, I think my iPhone 7 Plus is pretty fine as it is and that 120Hz refresh rate is something I can’t live without now that it is on the iPad. I think I’ll most probably upgrade when iPhone X has a 120Hz display or something. Browsing has never been the same with the iPad Pro!

But if you have the money to spend, iPhone X will definitely be a great buy!

I think the one 120 HZ refresh rate might make its way to the iPhone eventually. I think next year will be a bigger offering having two models of the iPhone X, which should be interesting to see the changes there.

aren't oled already 120 refresh rate? I know there is no lag with oled does refresh rate really matter with this kind of screen?

As for the iPhone X, I tried to research this and wasn't able to confirm if it has a 120 HZ refresh rate or not. As for LCD, it makes a significant difference in fluidity of the display from 60 HZ. It's nice once someone experiences it.

No, OLED displays are not automatically 120hz.

120hz refresh rate would be a boon for any touch screen display. It simply makes the entire experience of using the device much more fluid. It actually feels 1:1.

Best believe if the X featured a 120hz refresh rate (or ProMotion as Apple describes it) they would have screamed it from the rooftops.

Go research oled and refresh rates then come back.
Post your findings

'Apple dislike it'?

'Most of us'?

The notch was not part of any of the original leaks or prototypes. The notch appeared after Apple had to abandon their "all screen" goal and integrate a notch to accommodate the Face ID components.

So yes, I think it is safe to say that if Apple had a CHOICE, they would have preferred to not have a notch. Preferring not to have something is synonymous with "dislike". But you're likely one of the people that really believes they were excited about Face ID and the notch from the start, so reality may be a difficult concept, it's cool.

And based on the number of "I like the notch" threads, vs. the number of threads specifically anti-notch (right down to threads where the notch is "the" reason people won't be buying the X), it is safe to say that even if the notch isn't a deal killer, more people "dislike" it than those that find it an appealing aesthetic.

If you had a choice between an "all screen" X or an "all screen with a notch" X, you're telling me you'd honestly choose the notch? Okie dokie...

Face ID ABSOLUTELY takes up more space than a single front facing camera and proximity sensor. Between removing the home button and integrating Touch ID under the screen it was surely the goal (initially) to get as close to "all screen" as they could get.

Could they have integrated proximity under an OLED screen? I'd say yes, especially because they really believed they'd be able to integrate Touch ID. The front facing camera is a different animal, true, but it certainly wouldn't require anywhere near the real estate that the current notch takes up.

I don't get why people believe Apple wanted the notch and FaceID all along. They didn't. There was article after article about how much trouble they were having incorporating Touch ID. They failed. FaceID was the consolation prize, and with it we got the huge notch...

that's questionable.. there's other non-faceID stuff in there too

the flood illuminator appears to be coupled on the same module as the proximity sensor.. theres also the ambient light sensor, speaker, microphone, and front facing camera which would still need to be on the phone regardless of trueDepth system.

it's the dot projector and infrared camera which are solely trueDepth related.
