Actually, the notch was deliberate and required a lot more engineering effort... they had to make sure the display worked in that irregular shape and had to rework the UI as well.

I honestly don't get the notch hate. It can easily be hidden via software with a faux bezel. Apple could have been lazy about it and added physical bezels like every other unimaginative Android vendor but they decided to go the extra mile to create something cool, new and distinctive which they've accomplished with the X IMO.

I would really like to understand how is the notch cool. I am not trying to be rude but the notch and lack of Touch ID even if it was at the back are two main reasons for me not buying the iPhone X. I know it will definitely help in AR but that notch is right on the screen. Apple themselves have rules for app developers to not mask the notch so I am not sure they would ever do it in the future. If the phone is used in landscape mode with the notch on the left it will definitely block some text unless it’s fixed through the software.

At this point if I go to pre-order my phone at 12:45AM MDT on the 27th and there's more than a week wait I will just line my ass up along with everybody else at 7pm the night before it's on sale.

Apple does a pretty good job of sending enough product to their retail stores to make sure the first 100-200 line waiters walk out with the latest sexy thing they've built.

I'm running a 3+ year old iPhone 6 that has gotten painfully slow... primarily due to only having 1GB of RAM. I definitely need a new phone. I want a bigger screen that does better outside than the form factor of the iPhone 8 but don't want a monster 8+ in my pocket, so iPhone X for me.

Meanwhile Cook is traveling the world posing for PR photos, and talking about how perfect Apple products are. Another major disconnect.

If they have a million ready at launch-thats 2000 for each Apple store world wide

Possible. They won't allocate 100% of their day-1 inventory to stores. I would predict that at a minimum they will have 100 of each of the four configurations available at their stores. Their flagship stores in LA, NYC, Chicago, Sydney, etc., would have substantially more product.

I disagree. IMO, Apple is doing everything possible to stop the huge lines outside the Brick and Mortars on a launch. Way too much sinister behavior goes on, and inhibits actual customer access. :apple:

The headline should read:

iPhone X Ebay Prices Revised Up 20% Again as TrueDepth System Still Face Production Issues

What is your prediction? I say we will see $3,000? :apple:

Apple didn't violate anything, and last year I was able to upgrade to any model. This year I could have upgraded to an 8. Technically it's a bank loan Apple sets up for you, after 12 payments I can turn in the phone, or I can keep paying and own the phone after 24 months. In this case it's a turn-in after 13 months, so it cost me an extra payment to wait for the X.
Thanks - I do wonder what's going to happen next year - assuming all models come on time in September, will they allow folks that buy October/Nov to upgrade early? Since this is a bank loan that requires 12 payments sound they will likely not.

This kind of thing would lead me to not be surprised if the X has a number of issues once released.

From the ridiculous notch, to the fail at the apple event and production issues this device seems half baked in my opinion. That said, I'd never buy the first iteration of any tech device. Let the early adopters be the beta testers.

I don't think that was a "fail" at the Apple event as much as it was a failure in preparation by the presenter. I say this because I am almost sure that it was a case where, after starting an iPhone, the first attempt at unlocking it requires the passcode, and on subsequent unlocks you can do it with TouchID (in this case, FaceID). I just restarted my iPhone 6s, and it says: "Touch ID requires your passcode when iPhone restarts.".

This happens frequently with my iPhones, so I think that is what actually happened at the event. I wish the presenter would have just stopped and explained that. But, instead he just moved on.

Better yet, he should have entered passcode before beginning his presentation so that the phone would have been "FaceID unlock ready" at that point in the presentation. Not sure what I would have done if I were in his shoes considering the pressure of such a large world-wide live event.

If that was true Apple would be decreasing stocks at stores for launches but if anything we've seen the opposite.

Apple also seems to love the publicity of hundreds waiting in line, it always makes the news.

You do realize the phone is supposed to be in consumers hands in 22 days? They're supposed to manufacture 36M phones in 22 days and they haven't even perfected the TD camera and 3D facial recognition? Seems "clear" to me there will be compromises in the first round of phones.

I don't think they aim to have all 36 million units ready by launch day. But I have read that they are targeting 400,000 units per week, which means they'll probably have several million, maybe 10 million, ready by launch day, and they just keep producing and distributing in the weeks/months to come.

Doesn't matter. MacRumors members made it very clear as soon as the phone was announced that it's far too high priced to ever sell and no one will want to buy it. With no demand for it, supply shouldn't be an issue.
This may be the greatest comment left on the forums ever!

I’m not giving them credit for the notch as if it’s something desirable or clever. There is no good reason to push content up into the ears. They’re doing it so they can claim edge to edge display which is pure marketing drivel. Nobody was clamoring for a notch, yet Apple is cramming it down the throats of the users and developers and trying to pretend like it isn’t a silly design compromise.

I’ve no problem if you don’t like the look of the notch. In fact, great designs usually spark some sort of controversy and debate. But like I said, faux bezels will take care of any visual anomalies, so I don’t see why it should be a big deal or a reason to hate it.

Part of the reason for the notch is technical and part of it is marketing, absolutely. While users may not have been clamoring for a notch, they’ve certainly been clamoring for a beautiful, new, distinctive design.

Personally, I think they’ve achieved that... to me, the X looks both stunning and distinctive.

I like the notch/ears whatever you call it. There are a lot of similar-looking Android phones out there and I like my phone looking different and distinct.

Does anyone remember when Apple didn't ship a product unless it was ready? Clearly the X is compromise after compromise.
This is unfortunately what happens when your CEO is more focused on stock price than innovation. Apple sh*t the bed, plain and simple. They saw their stock price rising, got complacent, and didn't see a rush to innovate. They dragged their feet when it came to implementing TouchID under the display, and now that most of their competitors offer near bezel-less displays, Apple is forced to make compromises on the X or risk a hit to sales with a phone that has stayed relatively unchanged for four years.

Maybe it’s because he knows all the analyst reports are all ******** and is laughing at their stupidity and come launch day there will be sufficient stock?

He clearly doesn’t seem to be worried and if these reports are true then he would be stupid not to worry because his job depends on it. So if he’s not worried, why should everyone else be?

I am probably gonna upgrade in spring to an iPhone 8 Plus just for the size, battery life and improved camera features like Portrait Mode and Lighting, 4K support are starting to look attractive. I was gonna hold out until the iPhone X Plus, but it looks like it might take a few revisions before the True Dept Camera System is truly reliable. We are basically experiencing the iPhone 6 all over again with the iPhone X and the iPhone X Plus is gonna be like a 1.2 update.

So, if you really wanna be guaranteed a great revision of this phone, I would wait until at least the iPhone Xs (2019) or whatever comes after that.

There is no way in hell they are making 36M units for launch day. That's 36M units for the year! For the last few years, iPhones have released with a supply of between 11M and 15M units available on launch day, with supply increasing every year (and still not meeting demand). Apple would realistically need to make between 18M and 20M units to meet launch day demand, but there will be no where near that. In my opinion we'll be lucky to fight over 5M units come the 27th...

Clearly it isn’t being shipped until it’s ready. That’s why it still hasn’t been shipped. The 8 was ready, and it’s been shipped. The X? Not ready, not shipped. No compromise in evidence.

I'm guessing it will be a hot seller.

Ming-Chi Kuo reported early on that the X would have a glass back, wireless charging and a stainless steel casing. He later reported that they would be ridding the X of TouchID and that it would be released after a few weeks after the 8. Ming-Chi Kuo has a proven track record of almost always being right when it comes to Apple predictions, so when he predicts that the iPhone X supply is going to be limited come launch day, you better f*cking believe I'm gonna take his word. This phone will NOT have "sufficient stock" come launch day. I'm sorry to burst your bubble.

Also, if Tim Cook was doing such a great job at being CEO, the X wouldn't have been delayed to begin with. Get your products in order and then you can do your photo ops, Tim!

I don’t understand how people who are not getting the X, are fuming at the mouth at people who are willing to wait?
