I think you hit the nail on the head there, and that's how I feel too, it really is fiscally irresponsible to upgrade every year now at a minimum of 1K a time. Regardless of your financial status that is just literally a complete waste of money.
$1,000/year is a lot of money, but do you just throw your old iPhone in a drawer? If you sell it for $850-900 at the end of 12 months it’s actually a lot better deal than when the carriers used to add $20/month to cover the subsidy that let you “buy” a cellphone for $199.

Now if you buy a $1,000 Samsung, and three or four months later it’s selling everywhere for $700 new, you’ll be lucky to get $400-500 for it after a year. Congratulations, you just spent 3-4 times more on your Galaxy than you would have on an XS.

Wow, Apple wants Chinese business so bad they named the phone after their President.

No, they didn’t—at least not yet, and they likely never will.

Like I’ve said before, I think the new iPhones will be 11, 11R and 11 Max. Some people already pronounce the “ten” as “eks”; XI would be “eks eye” to them. Makes no sense to continue with Roman numerals. And yeah, they wouldn’t want to name it after the secretary/President/chairman.

Morgan Stanley says iPhone market share is recovering in China; Apple announces their latest quarterly earnings on Tuesday so we’ll likely know more then.

Indian blog CashKaro has collaborated with OnLeaks to share new renders of the so-called "iPhone XI" and "iPhone XI Max," providing a side-by-side comparison of the expected successors to the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

iPhone-XI-vs-iPhone-XI-Max-1-800x450.jpg

Both new iPhones are expected to stick with the same 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, but the thickness of each device is said to increase to 8.1mm and 7.8mm respectively as previously reported. Both the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are 7.7mm thick.

Apple's depth measurement does not include the camera bump, so with the slight reduction in size expected there, the change in overall thickness between 2018 iPhones and 2019 iPhones may be negligible.

As widely rumored by now, the new iPhones are expected to feature a triple-lens rear camera system in a triangular arrangement. While the camera bump has a larger square-shaped design, it appears to be less protruding, as the rear panel of each device is said to be formed out of a "single piece of glass."

The renders also suggest that 2019 versions of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will feature a redesigned circular-shaped mute switch within a pill-shaped cutout, similar to the one on older-generation iPads.

Beyond that, the renders suggest that 2019 iPhones will be similar to 2018 iPhones in many ways, complete with the same notch, bezels, stainless steel frame, Lightning connector, speaker grilles, and volume buttons. This would be more or less the same design as Apple has used since the iPhone X in 2017.

In addition to the static images, CashKaro and OnLeaks teamed up to create a 360-degree video of the renders:

Apple should unveil its next-generation iPhone lineup in September as usual alongside Apple Watch Series 5 models and other announcements. While not shown here, a new iPhone XR is also widely expected with a dual-lens rear camera system, up from a single lens on the current model.

I share the exact sentiments as the two of you.

Count me out. These designs if true are truly ugly imo. Long live my iPhone 8, bezels and all.

I don’t have a problem with the black back version at all, but the silver mock-up is not good. That mock-up should have an all-black camera bump (which still wouldn’t be as appealing to me as the all-black back however) and the Apple logo is obviously too high in both renders.

All I really want is even better stereo speakers, better battery life and a slightly smaller notch so I can see my battery percentage.

USB-C will literally change the direction I go in my next iPhone purchase. It's THAT important.

Same here, no USB-C? No purchase. I have been buying iphone every year since iphone 3GS. I guess this is the year I will actually consider to wait for the next round if they don't come with USB-C.

Why? Apple had all their **** using USB-C, macbook, ipad pro, iMac..etc. I don't want ANOTHER cable just for iphone anymore.

I don't see why they would redesign the mute switch. It's perfect as is, no need to change. I'm afraid that in a vertical orientation, the mute switch could much easier be accidentally switched when moving the phone into or out of the pocket, as this is also a vertical motion.

But if the new iPhone looks anything like in those pictures, I wouldn't buy it anyway.

Anyone else think this is all misdirection from Apple in that while they have a square cutout for cases, the back is actually completely flush with no camera bump?

Apple is NOT going to put USB-C on the iPhone until the USB-C Authentication Program that supports a type of "DRM" is implemented. Apple is not going to allow users to simply attach ANY USB-C cable to their iPhone... only those cables that accessory makers have paid a license to Apple for. The Authentication Program allows companies to control which USB-C cables have been "authenticated".

I've said it before and it needs to be said again, the incorporation of USB-C into Apple products is more of a "format shift" than it is any kind of increasing functionality.

Why? You have WiFi, Bluetooth and in 2020 5G cellular? Why do you need to hardwire connect a smartphone to a computer?

If not for that, what do you need the USB-C connector?

Everything is moving towards wireless. Why do you feel that a USB-C connector is so important?

This board always blows up with complaints about rumored design changes; whether it was the 4, 5, 6 or 8, it was the ugliest iPhone ever designed according to MR posters.

I’m sure it’ll look great. What I want to know is how big of an impact will these changes have? Or could they have achieved similar results with computational photography?

That’s one area where Apple could stand to improve a lot. For example, you’d think they would have perfected portrait mode by now, but all too often the subject is still blurry around the edges; sometimes even distorted.

I was really hoping they reduce the weight! I held a Samsung Galaxy S10+ recently and it felt fantastic. So sleek and light. I want to get the Max version for my next phone, but the heavy weight keeps me away.

That’s actually the one thing that keeps me away from many other devices, especially Samsung. I like the heavy weight and material used. Feels premium imo. Hoping the note 10 has some heft to it.

Iphone's UI isn't mindblowing but it's just right, which is an amazing accomplishment in design.

But until the X the bodies looked like higher end plastic toys, glorified ipods. Same with the early ipads, imacs, macbooks.

That's good because they weren't intended to look like technical gadgets. Can't argue with success.

An unthreatening iphone 8.

The X and XI should have stuck with the circle for the rear camera.

One of the most hideous things I've ever seen. Are the advantages of three lenses so great that it would justify buying that monstrosity (and likely spending $1500 to do it)?

Not a chance. Out of 1.1+ billion devices, almost all are Lightning, and there are well under 50 million USB-C only Macs. There are 3+ billion USB-A cables and chargers. On iPhone, USB-C brings nothing to the table for most, and would be a worse physical connector for all. Tons of downside with almost no up.

How is USB-C worse than lightning?
