Anyone else think they delayed the XR just to encourage people who can't wait to buy the higher-margin XS?
From the start they've planned/known for the XR to outsell the Max by about 3 to 1 and even moreso over the XS, which they're apparently having a hard time selling. Analysts predict the XR will make up 50 percent of phone sales while the Max will make up 20-30 percent with the rest of the phones taking up the rest. That's a ton of XRs to make, so they no doubt wanted to be ready for the demand.

Many people think that, but I don't think that's true. We had rumours many moons ago indicating there were LCD yield issues that would probably delay its release.

Plus, if that's the way Apple thinks, then last year they wouldn't have released the iPhone 8/8+ before the iPhone X.

Agree.

Well it seems like a few people on this thread are trying to justify buying the cheaper XR model. No, it’s not better than the XS or XS Max.
IMO, the XS Max is better than the XR hands down, but at a high price. I'm not interested in the XS at all though. It seems I'm not the only one. Initial supply chain analyses suggest the XS Max is outselling the XS by a very wide margin.

For the people who want better antenna gain and battery life, XR is the clear winner.

No, because few consumers are likely willing to spend 33% or 50% more for the XS or XS Max, respectively.

If Apple thought XR would cannibalize XS or XS Max, they would simply raise the price of XR.

We knew a long time ago the XR development schedule was behind the XS. When Apple decided to add DSDS, it further delayed the XR. Today's FCC approval schedule supports those claims. If Apple were sitting on the XR, it would have received FCC approval last month.

Dual-SIM dual-standby delayed it too? What's the timeline?

The supply chain analysts are suggesting the XS sales are underwhelming, easily bested by the Max several fold, but yet come November, the XR should outsell the Max 2.5 to 1.

Yeah, even Apple apparently is projecting that the XR will comprise 50% of iPhone sales. That's a lot of confidence in one model.

There’s a few posts here that come off as trying to justify some idea that the iPhone XR is better for this and that... even more so, they come off as attacks towards the premium Xs model simply because it’s more expensive.

Not being able to afford something isn’t a reason to make jabs at a premium product. You can still get affordable and high quality Apple products from either them or other 3rd party sources without having to get into debt for it. The reasons some people put are not even constructive and instead are just bitterness.

That may be true for a few posts, but the way I see it is some people are saying the XS and XS Max are just better just because OLED, etc. I personally don't think that's the case, and as mentioned before, I think the XR has some distinct advantages over the XS.

In my personal view, the two most interesting phones for us are the XR and the XS Max.

Also, it's not necessarily about affordability, but value for money spent. Remember, to get get a XS Max with more than 64 GB costs a whopping 56% more than an XR with more than 64 GB. That ought to give a lot of people pause. (Many well-to-do people are well-to-do partially because they know how to manage their finances.)

When it comes to the XS, yes it has several advantages over the XR, but it also has several disadvantages, yet still has a higher price. The XS is a premium product with premium parts, but it also has some significant compromises as well.

As someone who owns an OLED TV (which is awesome BTW), I just don't think it should be defining feature for a phone. Personally I'd be very happy with a high pixel density LCD as well. I look to other features as well to make my decision.

The XR is the little LCD brother to the XS Max. Right now the XS has no real little brother. 2019 may bring that little LCD brother, at 5.5" and 326 ppi.
Indeed, my one regret about the XR is that there's no "XR Mini" - not so much to be cheaper, but just to be smaller, sized more like the 6/7/8 (or even a bit smaller with roughly the same screen area).

Dual-SIM dual-standby delayed it too? What's the timeline?

January 2018: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/01/23/kgi-6-1-inch-lcd-iphone-details/

"Development schedule of new 6.1" LCD iPhone slightly behind 6.5" and 5.8" OLED models, but it may enjoy extended longevity into 1H19F [...]"

April 2018: https://www.macrumors.com/2018/04/18/kuo-6-1-inch-iphone-dual-sim-option/

"Kuo believes that mass production on the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will start three to five weeks later than the two OLED models because of the recent decision to add a DSDS model."

I honestly think this phone will fail hard. I hear nobody talking about it and it's a cheapo 720p lcd screen for 750 dollars?

50 percent of all iPhone sales projected? Doubtful

Nobody is talking about it because reviewers haven't received sample devices.

Most iPhone buyers are not spec buyers.

For $250 more the XS vs XR in a nutshell gives:

1. OLED
2. Gigabit LTE
3. Better rear camera (addition of dedicated telephoto)
4. Smaller size

Folks need to ask themselves if that is worth it to them.

For me ... I keep my phones for 2+ years ... so for 30 cents a day ... the above is worth it to me.

Having an OLED TV ... getting another a LCD phone for the next 2 years or OLED for the next 2 years. Sign me up for the XS - easy choice.

But also, the XS has a smaller screen with less info on-screen, and shorter battery life, compared to the XR.

IMO, the real choice is XR vs XS Max. The XS is in a different size class.

The XS Max is the big phone of the "big" size class.
The XR is the small phone of the "big" size class.
The XS is the big phone of the "small" size class.
There is no small phone of the "small" size class. <-- This is the phone I'm thinking could possibly see a 2019 intro.

I'm sure I'm pretty unique in this...but I just upgraded my iPhone 5 to a brand new, top of the line iPhone 7 which arrived yesterday. At a third to half the cost of the new crop of iPhones, coming from such an ancient model (the 5), I am stunned by how great this new (to me) phone is. Four years from now I'll probably buy a new XR and be suitably stunned with it's speed etc. But for me and the way I use my phone, the 7 is just amazing. My checkbook has similar feelings of joy too!

I am coming from an iPhone 7 to an XS ... there is no "shorter battery life" in my case :)
