If Dual Sim is the killer feature then this is the end of an era. But I disagree, watching presentation it was clearly the addition of Gold colour that was the new standout feature.

yeah, and did I get this right that China gets real dual SIM, and the rest of the world get's a 1 physical SIM and one eSIM?, … WTF! Now we need to import it form China?

If it was notable, Apple would have mentioned it. Historically, they've loved a good curved graph showing how each new iPhone is 2-3x faster than the last one.

They talked about how much faster the new CPU's are, and the increases are pretty in line with what they've been for the past few years (which is to say, relatively small).

You know this is basically what happens every "S" year, right? Refinements and improvements on the previous year's features. This is how Apple has done it for a long time, with few exceptions.

I don't understand how so many people are surprised or upset about the lack of new features.
I’m not surprised in the least.

I'm not sure how. It weighs more than the 8 plus which weighs more than the 7 plus.

Someone is a little desperate to be invited to the next event.

iPhone XS Max
6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 in
208 grams

iPhone 8 Plus
6.28 x 3.07 x 0.32 in
202 grams

(sorry about the mix of imperial and metric ...)

So the Verge wrote this:

It feels much better than any “Plus” iPhone ever has. I always found the Plus-sized iPhones to be ungainly, but the Max seems to be a little more ergonomic in subtle ways. If you’ve wanted a Plus before but were put off by the size, I’d at least try to hold the new Max size before making your decision.

Huh?

Granted, with handheld devices, small differences can make an impact, but the difference is:

0.08 x 0.02 x 0.02

So only 0.5mm width and thickness difference, and the most notable difference is the length, at about 2mm shorter (which kind of doesn't affect the in hand ergonomics ...[?])

I mean, I _suppose_ the overall experience is pretty different, but it sounded like the comment was mostly about the form factor.

It is like this every time they come out with a "S" model. The reviewers are hemming and hawing about "minor" feature upgrades.

I don't want to buy a new phone every year. I am still using a 7 Plus so people like me going to the XS Max this will be a huge improvement. If you have a 8 or X maybe wait till next year unless you really need or want some of these new features.

Personally the 7 Plus is still a fine phone for what I do/need. I could even see myself holding out for another year.

Shockingly light?

iPhone Xs Max - 7.34oz, 208g

iPhone 8 Plus - 7.13oz, 202g

iPhone 7 Plus - 6.63oz, 188g

I think the euphoria over shiny new iPhones has clouded people's senses. Let's see what they think of the weight after they've spent a week with the device.
Compared to carrying around a brick, it is a lot lighter. If that isn't a selling point, what is? :D

Apple iPhone Xs Max
Display: 6.5-inch

Dimensions: 6.20 x 3.05 x 0.30 inches

Weight: 208 grams

Apple iPhone Xs
Display: 5.8-inch

Dimensions: 5.65 c 2.79 x 0.30 inches

Weight: 177 grams

The Max doesn’t seem much bigger than my 6S+.

Will the depth of field slider be available on the iPhone X? Anyone figure that out? Does it only work on new A12 phones? I'm thinking about the Xr, but if the original X gets this feature via an update, I can just get the X now. Would prefer a slightly smaller phone anyway.

EDIT: Confirmed on Apple, no depth of field for iPhone X, and no Smart HDR either. Xr has both. Well then...

If you can get past the dismal 1792x828 resolution with a mere 326 PPI. For reference, iPhone 4 had the same PPI.

Well that's a creative way of making it sounds as bad as possible. It's also the same PPI as the iPhone 8 (not the plus).

I'm on a 6s plus and I'm still not tempted to upgrade. Main reason is my camera is broken on the 6s but at the money they want for new phones I think id rather buy a Sony A7 III

And the iPhone 4 had a tiny 3.5" screen...

The question is, who cares about ppi? Does the screen look good? iPhone 8 had a 326 ppi and it looked great. At some point, your eyes can't see the difference at a normal distance anyway.

If you want spec bragging rights, get an Android.

No, iPhone 4S featured Siri, which the 4 lacked. iPhone 5S featured Touch ID. There have generally been substantial new features on S years.

There are some decent improvements in the mix - notably the capacity, the louder speakers and the more colorful screen - but beyond that, many will likely be torn between last year’s iPhone X that will now be cheaper and having the latest iPhone as we can’t say the upgrades we saw were many and overpowering. The iPhone XR seems more of an impressive feat from Apple, to be honest.
Um the original iPhone X is no longer being sold. And I’d love to ask who ever wrote this what upgrades exactly they were expecting. Tech writers complain about boring but then never say what wouldn’t be boring. Even if Apple upped the resolution to 4K these tech writers would still be complaining. Sheesh.

I think all the other S versions had bigger upgrades though. I believe Touch ID, Hey Siri, 3D Touch were all S versions. There is always a big processor jump and this was no exception. But the A chip is already so powerful for a device that is mainly given only light low intensity work, that speed seems unnecessary.

4S, 5S and 6S all used to have major new features, or at the very least the performance upgrades were quite significant (Siri, Touch ID, 3D touch). Plus performance from the 4 to 4S was also night and day, 5S was the first to move to the 64 bit architecture, while the 6S again was a huge upgrade performance wise from the 6 (especially the plus). This one doesn't have any of that. Of course performance with iOS 12 is already quite fast but still, nothing on this phones to make you really itch to have them.

In my opinion the S models were the more exiting ones. Due to lack of design change we were getting milstone fautures, Apple could focus on technology rather than looks. At the moment I can’t see any feauture that will convince me to change my X to Xs. Especially it’s not even year since I bought it as they start selling them November.

I’m curious what feature people wanted that isn’t there. The smartphone is a mature product. Aside from chip technology and camera improvements what else is there really. 4K on a small screen like this is just spec whoring and foldable screens seem like a gimmick.

Boring people are easily bored. Leave them be.
