Hi guys

I bought Xs Max Friday. Had an X before.

Installed 12.2 from scratch with ITunes restore.

Haven’t seen any stuttering problem since having the phone.

Explain rouge app please?. Do we have to delete apps until our phones are smooth without stuttering and jitters when using the UI ?
I’ve already disabled the majority of settings on this phone so I am not too warmed up to the feeling of finding an app that’s affecting the stuttering. Besides I am on a third replacement and still no resolve. Will wait until the so called revolutionary IOS 13 and see but after that, I am afraid this will seriously hinder my loyalty to any further apple products. The A12 chip is in my view the cause of this problem were we as a customer have to compromise smooth UI over battery performance. As a result we have stuttering android like phones. Funny that Apples chief engineer forbthe apple phone chips including the A12 has just left apple. Anyways I am shocked that this jitter/stutter is the norm in new phones and people are accepting it. Only motivated, highly acute personnel with high attention to detail will not tolerate this stuttering mess.

Also since updating to 12.3 my IPad now also stutters (IPad Air 2) was brilliant before. Really doubting to upgrade as I am also seeing all models with the A12 chip in the shops with the stuttering messy UI. Could not play games on the XS nor video without frame rate drops. My good old IPad Air 2 was perfect for this with no issues but after the last update it is almost as if everything has gone corrupt.

As for me, investing in the most expensive version of the device to get rid of the problem is stupid. That's how APPLE works. They have passed the standards to the point, do you want the device to work smoothly? buy a new model, unfortunately for the first update. Their financial problems are dictated by the lack of any innovation in the sakura that shows the conspiracy. Their tremendous asset, which is the smoothness of the system's operation, will fall apart with everything, and each day of ignorance will cause that the Titanic will float on the bottom of the ocean, Tim will jump out of his office faster than he would shoot in the head.

Good luck. Been in that boat three times before. Always is smooth the first few days.

Won't happen.

So basically this is some software issue for some (based on some criteria that seems to start the issue and then can't be undone), which is the good news.

I made some videos trying to show how my iPhone Xs sutters/jitters as it scrolls. This occurs throughout the entire system, but I've noticed that is particularly apparent in the YouTube app. The first is a video made directly using the screen recording feature in iOS. While that drastically reduces the effect, I still managed to capture a couple of instances of where the scrolling is jittery. It's as if while scrolling in a particular direction, the content momentarily jerks in the opposite direction. You will need to watch these full-screen.

The second video is just a recording of the phone's screen. It's a little bit harder observe, but the content jitters constantly while scrolling. It's not a consequence of recording, as it's observable in person and is even more apparent. I choose YouTube because the effect is much worse, particularly when playing video, but jittery scrolling happens everywhere, throughout the entire system. It sometimes even hurts my eyes as they naturally try to track the content's motion as it constantly jerks around.

I have both true tone and auto-brightness turned off, as well as any other accessibility feature.

@Eso - I experience this on my 7 Plus as well. Talking about YouTube specifically. I've actually had that on all of my iPhones thus far. I believe it's from the app itself.

But the video playback & inactivity stutter/choppiness? That's a different animal on the 2018 models.

I’m able to duplicate in Youtube. However unable to duplicate in safari or other apps.

Looks like a problem with the YouTube app.

I just purchased an iPad mini 5 and can confirm that the stutters are there as well. On this device, the easiest way to see it is to use multitasking and slide an app off and back on the screen (over another app). The stuttering is very noticeable. The funny thing is that the iPad mini 4, with a processor 4 generations older, does this operation perfectly smoothly.

It seems that there are problems with all A12 based devices.

Yeah it seems there are problems with SOME a12 devices. There quite a difference in replacing the word “all” with “some”.

So the culprit lies in some of the A12 chips, allegedly. Nasty. Major screw up if true. Much worse than a software issue. Well, on the flipside, maybe the A13 chips won't exhibit those problems.. hopefully. Still a bummer for (some of) those who bought last year's models though. Interesting.

Is it proven it’s the A12 chip itself? Allegedly? Do you have a citation for this?

I didn’t say it is the a12 chip itself. There are problems with every device which uses it, though. It could be the software routines which handle screen updates, etc. I heard today that the new iPad pros also are having stuttering issues.

There appear to be some problems with some devices on the a12. Yes it could be software, configuration, etc

How do you know if it’s only some? Seems to me that a lot of devices have this issue and I see it in all the new devices I’ve come across. If it is software then why is it taking so long to fix despite so many motivated people complaining. Don’t see why we should expect this stuttering issue to be normal in the new phones. If it’s not fixed now then we can be sure that all future releases will be the same and this appears to be the case with the new IPad Mini.
I am looking to upgrade my iPad but as I said before, all the new ones in the store stutter as well so I am basically not sure what to do but hold out for a bit hoping for a fix.
I am on my third replacement XS and they all have the issue! Do I just keep going until I am lucky and get one that is supposed to be perfect like some people have.

I told you all very clearly. Do not let it bother you to buy other Apple devices until they fix it. This is the number 1 problem.

I hate to play the semantics game, but here goes. My max is not having the “stuttering” issue. If my max isn’t having the issue that means not “all” a12 devices are having that issue, which means some a12 devices are having the issue. If you want to parse a lot vs some please feel free.

In that context, are you able to capture a video of your Max via another device, going through the steps necessary to recreate the issues mentioned in this thread? Nothing personal. I just want to see it with my own eyes, if possible.

Maybe you should think about what your max differs from our devices. Resolution means that the entire interface scales differently. maybe it's about something trivial. Perhaps Max as the most expensive option is in some aspects more refined. I do not know myself anymore. I just want to tell you that it is not important that a friend is lucky and his device is free from defects, in my opinion most devices have this problem, it is only about human consciousness and to put pressure on Apple to adequately address this situation.

Sure I’ll try to capture it with my 5s. That’s my spare phone.
