Why are you posting on here if you don’t have an issue ? I don’t get it ?

Well I have two iPhone XS Max and two iPhone X and none of them are displaying the behavior you keep claiming to see, they each suffered other issues that apple support saw fit to replace the devices.

I asked for evidence of your claim, one video was posted, titled stuttergate, dated 5 months ago and keeps getting reposted. The video is of poor quality and does not show what you say is happening to your iPhone.

The behavior is being labeled as a stutter, a micro stutter, an animation delay, and dropped frames by different posters. However each are very different things, they aren’t the same.

There are other posters as well claiming their iPhones do not exhibit the behavior your describing and cannot see what the video is suppose to reveal, its just some creepy guy saying there is a stutter.

And from what i read it appears as though the few posters on the thread that are exhibiting said behavior, all have low post counts and have been posting predominately or entirely in this one thread.

It’s questionable to say the least.

Just for clarity: my question about groups was intended to be about me, not you. Rereading it, I can see how this wasn't entirely clear. I was trying to ask if you believed me when I said I don't experience stuttering on my phone...or if it is indeed stuttering and I just can't see it...or if I'm lying about the whole thing. I absolutely didn't mean to imply that you (nor the other people posting in this thread) are being untruthful about your experiences.

My own answer is that my phone doesn't suffer from stuttering. I've looked for this behavior, watched the videos, and recreated the actions to see if I could reproduce the effect. I still see nothing. But I'm open to the possibility that it's there - sometimes - and I haven't been able to notice it. I have no way to disprove that theory, even if I find it unlikely. In general, I've never considered myself to have low standards with respect to quality in anything I own. I've fought battles over relatively minor QA issues with TVs, cars, computers, clothing, etc. But I guess it's possible that this single facet of my phone's performance simply doesn't pop up on my radar.

If true, that means the stuttering on my device is incredibly subtle. Which implies that it's possible every phone may do it, but almost no one notices. This would also explains why the issue is receiving relatively little attention (at least, nothing relative to prior Apple controversies like antennagate or bendgate).

So - either they all stutter very subtly, or only a small percentage of devices do it. I know which possibility sounds more likely to me, but again, I have no idea how anyone proves that. Maybe I should ship you my phone so you can take a look and tell me if I'm blind.

Maybe this is a solution. Someone who has a phone that they believe has not the issue physically shows us who have the issue.

This would certainly prove that there are effected batches however not to sure about this as I’m on my third replacement and see it still on devices in stores. If I physically see one that does not have the stutter then I can make that informed Decision to rather purchase a different model or seek one abroad.

I agree that the video is crap. Not the best one I’ve seen. Especially since the software is getting better which proves this issue can be fixed. As I said before, I am looking forward to the new updates as time goes on things seem to be getting better over time.

It's more subtle in this video, but if you got the eyes for it you can notice the frame drop(s):

I had it worse though.

@I7guy:

Movie title appears to be Triple Threat (2019). Go ahead and try it (Netflix maybe?). I had the same problem on my XS, so I returned it.

It’s so subtle I couldn’t see it, i even tried slowing down the video to see and nothing, what was irritating through was him moving the camera back and forth.

Anyway thank you for posting another video.

Sure. Though I don't see how low post count means anything. I actually had an account here before but subsequently lost my credentials and made a new one. Let's not deviate from the topic.

I don't think you understand the gist of it. We bought the phones. It's clear that we want(ed) to keep them, otherwise we wouldn't be here and talk about this. We are not bashing Apple for no reason, we just find ourselves in a situation where a large sum of money has been paid and the product simply doesn't meet our expectations and more importantly, Apple's marketing prowess.

That's pretty much it. You can say whatever you want, but at the end of the day my eyes see what they see and unfortunately, they can't unsee it.

Happy for you and everyone else whose phone's intact. Hopefully a finalized fix will pop up in Software Update soon for our sake.

@I7guy - The video posted on Facebook isn't one of the trailer, but the beginning of the movie itself. Anyway, chances are that if you don't see any stutter in the trailer you won't be seeing any in the movie either. Thanks for checking it out though.

I just don’t understand how anyone can spend 1k or more on a device and not be completely satisfied, its not right.

If my phone stuttered I wouldn’t stand for it.
As I said in one of my previous post, I had both iPhone XS Max replaced through apple, one for pink shift and the other for crashing and random reboots. Apple support is a great service, quick and easy.

I wouldn’t put up with a device that wasn’t functioning right or where I would have to make constant compromises. I would have it replaced and if that didn’t fix it I would get a different device.

I don’t understand why anyone would stick with a defective device or a product that’s not working for them, especially if its an iPhone, apple usually makes things right.

I quickly created a channel on Youtube and posted video from my device. Unfortunately, the screen recording phenomenon is less annoying but visible. Praise your efforts!

Well, if you're asking me - I didn't put up with it. I returned the phone and got my money back. Actually, I really want to get another one, but won't do so before these issue have been eradicated. Can't risk spending another $1000 and finding them present in the aftermath.

@Robertoxxxl - Yikes. It's literally everywhere on your device. It was pretty much the same with my XS. Can't say that there isn't any stutter on my 7 Plus, but it's miles better than the XS was. #Lottery.

Don’t you worry, You don’t need to justify your actions, your good. I wasn’t singling you out.

I know how it feels to get a defective device, and having to get it swapped or returned, extra steps that were never warranted no matter how easy the are, tedious to say the least.

all devices mentioned have the same symptoms. Replacing for a new one does not give anything. All of this you have to watch in 1080p 60fps I did it so that I could show it.

Thank you.

Ok so it’s basically the slow down in:
YouTube app
Allegro app
What’s app

Am I correct?

EVERYWHERE

I think I’m starting to see it, it’s like a judder.

I thought it was because you were moving very fast or the compression on the video, but I just checked on my iPhone, yeah it does not do that. My iPhone XS is smooth and fluid.

Edit: I think I see the dropped frame when exiting Santander app.

Yeah that sucks.
None of my devices are doing that.

My Xr is playing crazy right now. Everywhere stuttering. Apps freeze / chrash like my old Xr. The display often does not respond. It gets worse. I have no fun with my Xr. If I exchange it again I have to take off my Belkin Screenprotecor again and pay 35 €. It‘s annoying...

Ok so this was something I noticed the same night I got my IPhone XS Max. I would like to thank all of the users here and on the video thread for relentlessly documenting this for others to find.

I recently updated my phone from a iPhone 8 Plus (beautiful workmanlike speedy beast to this day). I feel the 8 got a lot of flak for not pushing innovation too much that gen but what it lacked in that it made up for in a masterful polishing of all their previous ideas. In my opinion the quintessential iPhone since the 4.

Now I have to say that I lease my phone yearly from Sprint because it just fits better economically for me right now. If I had paid the list price outright for this phone I would probably be a lonely picketer outside Apple with a big dopey look on my face.

Since I’m leasing it, I’m just fuming instead.

WHAT is the point of a $1100 phone with an upgraded screen emphasizing beauty, an all touch interface that drops even more buttons to emphasize beauty AND to promote just how confident Apple is that their gesture system works, an upgraded processor and graphics architecture to show off SPEED of all things, higher touch refresh and the good ol LTE and high speed WiFi IF THE DAMN phone negates most of that luster to constant jitters, stutters, slowdowns in the UI and scrolling which are literally the most basic features you need to have mastered in order for any of that to be worth it?

Thank you for reading the worlds longest run-on sentence that I noticed halfway through and just proceeded to finish it out to emphasize how much I’m boggled by this.

I’m getting stuttering scrolling in Facebook, Reddit, messenger, discord, a podcast app, Gmail, YouTube (admittedly garbage app one way or the other).

Oddly enough the ONE place that has scrolling that doesn’t seem to be an issue is literally 95% of Safari. This app clearly has some sort of rendering technique that is either unavailable or unknown to app developers. Probably higher resource access to the OS? I’d say a close second is scrolling in Netflix, they seem to be pretty polished.

Also in games, a fully 2D game called Empires and Puzzles will go through random 20 second seemingly halving of the frame rate which turns it into a stutters mess. Candy Crush Friends which is rendered in full 3D has stuttering but it’s less pronounced.

Here’s what I have done:

- Full factory restore from DFU mode in iTunes.
- Attempted beta 2 for 12.3. Still there. Reverted back because apps took to long to start.
- auto brightness
-recording mode
- installing and using only one app from a fresh install
- airplane mode
- accessibility settings

None of these fixed it.

I only have a few days to return to my sprint store and ask for an exchange of the same model. Should I try a different XS Max or just keep it?

Mind you Im gonna have issues exchanging the glass protector I just got and can’t find the receipt for so I don’t want to exchange it if it’s 80-90% not gonna make a damn difference.

Thoughts?

I’ve had my XS Max since launch day, I was going to return it the next day when I noticed the stutters, but couldn’t bring myself to do it because the phone was such a big upgrade from the 6s plus. I thought to myself, “the stutters will probably be fixed by an update soon” Alas, it’s been over 6 months and it’s still an issue. It still annoys me everyday, but I’m just living with it at this point. I would exchange but others have reported no difference. I would sell, but same thing, I don’t want to lose this large of an upgrade. If I were you, I’d return the phone, stick with your iPhone 8, and wait until it’s confirmed the issue is fixed and get the phone again or just wait until September and get the new iPhone then. But in the end it’s up to you, and this is only a recommendation. Good luck!

Do you experience it to the extent that I do, even in games?

I do as well. On third replacement XS at the moment. Must admit the new update beta 2 improved the stuttering and is a massive step forward. I hope the next one is better as well.

I am having the same issue with empires and puzzles. Playing this game on my iPad Air 2 is smooth as silk so don’t play it on the XS anymore.

Hopefully if you get a replacement it may be better but not convinced that only few models are affected. If the software can improve all the stuttering then it can be fixed but at a compromise where we may find battery performance degrade. I would prefer smooth UI over battery performance and I am sure others would as well.

At the moment with this beta 2 no stuttering problem, for me it seems to have been fixed. I wait for feedback with the beta 3

I’d easily give up half my battery life to have a flawless UI. Obviously that’s wishful thinking, but I want to put into perspective how annoying these stutters are for people that are impacted by them. I see a lot of stutters in fortnite and critical ops, basically shooting games that require precise aiming, which is impossible with the panning issues.
