I think we can all agree on that it is not acceptable that an upgrade destroys all pictures. But hell, this seems to be part of the 'modern' world that this happens (not trying to defend Apple, but **** happens).

It is also not acceptable for any user to do updates like this without making a backup (especially for x.0.0 updates).

I have
- TimeMachine Backup
- before every 'big' install/update I make a Disk Clone

Luckily I had no problems with iLife 11 and I'm fairly happy with it (even though the whole iLife 11 is somewhat underwhelming)

APPLE: please do better QA on your products - to much went wrong in too little time

USERS: when will you learn and do backups? Harddrives can fail, upgrades can fail, ... so many things can fail. Backups are a MUST.

OK, I've installed it: it feels like an app that wasn't ready for release, but which had to meet a deadline.

Apple is trying to convince us that it still cares for mac and yet the media event very much felt like here's a bit of this and a touch of that. Unfortunately we haven't had time to get anything useful done as we have been focusing on iOS.

iPhoto is slow to the point of being ridiculous. Apple appears to be copying ideas or evolving ideas that users like as a last minute thought.

I have been using macs since the second coming of Jobs and I can honestly say that when ipod and iphone passed mac as the main revenue stream, everything mac related has become less and less impressive. I am really at the point where I think to myself that a custom install of windows would be as good as what I have on a mac.

Been using it for the last 5 days, no issues, no crashes, no slow downs. I don't know where you're getting these idea's from.

Slow? It's slightly faster when switching albums, even importing 300 pictures I took over the weekend.

I'm having no problems with iPhoto '11 and the old Apple TV, I just synced some new photos and there they are on my TV.

Didn't lose any photos either...but I've got them all backed so it wouldn't have been an issue if I did.

Holy freaking crap, way to screw all your loyal customers that actually bought your original apple tv in the arse

I upgraded to iLife 11 today.

I have had no issue at all with iPhoto, well except that the scrolling seemed a tad unresponsive at first, but apart from that it is all fine.

You might not be experiencing the issues that the other poster is, but I can definitely attest to iPhoto being slow. My machine well-exceeds the system requirements, but iPhoto runs like an absolute dog on a relatively small library--around 900 or so photos. I'm going to try a few things on my own before submitting a bug report to Apple, but please know--the issue of iPhoto running slowly is a real issue for some.

No issues with my 2 iMacs, 2 MacBook Pros, and 2 MacBooks. All are backed-up to 2Tb Time Capsule, but none lost a library.

Time Machine, to get the previous iPhoto library from the Pictures folder.

Done.

Lemon after lemon

Apple should change their logo to a Lemon because Apple of late just seems to be producing lemon after lemon. Perhaps they want us to make Lemonade. Aperture 3 caused similar problems. What has happened to my favorite computer company? They have completely lost perspective. How can they not know have strict control over software on their own platform. It just doesn't make sense.

Aside from all this I'm really disappointed that there is no pinch-to-zoom feature...I mean they sell all these multi-touch enabled devices but it's barely implemented in anything. iPhoto seems like a no-brainer to incorporate pinch-zoom as it works like that on the iPhone and iPad. :( :( :(

Are you sure? That feature is present even in iPhoto '08.

Same problem here. If I remember rightly, in '09 pinch to zoom only worked in full screen.

Now, in '11 it only work when the edit pane is up. Weird.

Way to read the thread, macrumor users are all reporting compatibility with original appletv

Reset it. Then it works fine.

9 to 5 Mac points out that a growing number of users are reporting problems upgrading their iPhoto installations to the newest version included in the new iLife '11. According to the report, users are finding some or all of their photos disappearing following the upgrade process.Suggested steps to take for those affect by the problem include repairing permissions and rebuilding iPhoto libraries. Of course, backing up the existing iPhoto library before upgrading is the most reliable method for ensuring that photos are not lost.

Here's an idea. Try reporting on something AFTER 72 hours of good troubleshooting. 9 to 5 Mac? Try 9 to 5 Masturbation.....

I have not noticed losing any photos. At least I am happy to have Time Machine if I indeed lost something.
The issue I have is I have thousands of photos. How do I know if I lost something?

Uhh.. I haven't had a single problem yet. :D

My 18 GB Library with thousands of photos converted without a single hick up.

The only bug I have noticed so far is that when you edit a photo sometimes the resulting picture isn't created it stays a blurred image forever. Workaround is to go into Edit mode again, do something, undo it, leave edit mode and it's fixed...

I like the new UI and many things have been improved a lot. The old interface was totally overloaded. A lot of people are hopelessly exaggerating here again, as usual...

One thing I also noticed is that iPhoto is a lot faster in some areas. Importing Photos for example, managing Events, etc... It is very slow on finishing up an Edit though but I suspect there is a bug in there somewhere...

This has happened with every single iLife update since 2003

Question

How can I back up my iPhoto?
Will it save all of the faces and places information?

If you have the space required just go into Finder -> Pictures and Alt + Drag the iPhoto Library. This will duplicate it. Then proceed with the update and if it went all wrong delete the iPhoto Library and rename your duplicate back to "iPhoto Library" and you have restored it to the original.

Upgrading...

Oh crap! Should I upgrade now? I have Time Machine just incase though. Then again, most issues that are talked about with Apple software or hardware I never have.

123GB library upgraded in minutes w/ zero issues from iLife '09. NOT saying other people didn't have a problem, only that it's not a universal problem.

Losing photos is heartbreaking so I guess the question is why don't people backup their "priceless" gems? It's not like they don't know to backup b/c companies like Mozy and Carbonite advertise everywhere. Users also have Time Machine available to them in SL (which is a requirement for iLife 11). All they had to do was plug in a $99 ext. hard drive.

I confess, I use to not back up and then one day my HD went down and lost everything. Learned my lesson. Tragically, sometimes that is what it takes b/c people think it's never going to happen to them -- but it will.

Also wondering if the iPhoto library is being corrupted but the actual JPEGs are still intact.

I don't think its a widespread issue. If you have a backup you have nothing to worry about...
