So I couldn't wait anymore and "obtained" 2.0 through non-official sources. In case I have to go back to 1.1.4, where would I be able to download that? I couldn't find anything on Apple's pages ...

All previous software installs that you have done should be stored on your computer in the folder:

~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates

You can always downgrade by opt-restore and choose the file from this folder.

Well, this is simply infuriating. When I click the link to 'buy the software update' I am told that the iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable, however I can access the rest of the store.

That's even easier than downloading... thanks!

This might not happen to everyone. But when I was trying to downgrade from 2.0 back to 1.1.4 i got an error saying this ipod cannot be restored.
I unplugged the ipod and plugged it back in. itunes then tells me this ipod is in the middle of a restore and is stuck in recovery mode. it then prompted me to install 1.1.4 again which it then downloads from the actual itunes server.

This is the final version, nothing different from what Itunes will give you.

and even if it wasn't all you people who seem to care what other people do with a publicly available file - shut up. its none of your business. no one needs your opinion on whether they should wait. people know full well that if the package they are getting doesn't work they can just roll to another version. its not a crisis if its the wrong one. and if you think apple doesn't know that people are downloading that file, you're naive.

Hi Guys,

Please don't flame me for this.

There's an awful lot going on today. I have an Ipod Touch but still downloaded the firmware yesterday that Arn marked as iPhone only.

Has anyone upgraded their Touch with a non official v2.0 firmware? If so can they post / repost the steps.

Cheers.

Well it wasn't completely trouble free, several of the apps wouldn't sync due to an error. I searched around a bit and it's caused by "hacking" your ipod/iphone, I guess I'll just restore to 1.1.4 and re-update to 1.2 when things calm down. I will just play around with the apps that did sync for now.

OK rite heres the deal.
I can't downgrade my ipod. I end up in the endless restore/download 1.1.4 cycle in itunes

Any one else had this problem

Have you tried putting the ipod into DFU mode and then restoring it to 1.1.4?

you have to put it into one of those modes, its out there google it. i forget what they are, dfu, etc.

iTunes Store Temporarily Unavailable

Ditto, here. I've been trying to update my Touch for nearly 7 hours now with no success. Although the past couple minutes I noticed it's now saying "your network connection has been reset" when I click on the link on Apple's site to buy the firmware update.

well then its all coming together now! :)

Stupid question
I have a copy of the 5a345 file on my desktop.
But its acting as a folder

I tried renaming it to have .ipsw but this didn't make a difference.

Any idea?

So is it just high traffic that is causing all of this? Has Apple said a thing about when it will be back up?

My iTunes says that 1.1.4 is now the current version, after recently saying that 2.0 was available? I guess they took it down.

Well, in :apple:'s defense, Mozilla had a 20MB file and didn't have to worry about secure access.

The firmware is 223 MB and should be done with secure payments and the link when it all gets working.

Don't mistake me, I'm not excusing them...they had plenty of time to prepare. However, the scenarios are a bit different (I did think of that point earlier today).

I'm sure there were a bunch of akamai servers taking up the slack at some point, too. This isn't just a matter of streaming 20MB down. There's purchasing, authentication and apparently several other weird dependencies. This is a huge rollout. Not only are we looking at the iPhone and iPod touch, they're also trying to get Mobile.Me out the door and replacing .Mac at the same time.

You can plan all you like, but it never really works out the way that you plan. :/

I *am* gonna give Apple a pass on this. If it's this bad next time, then I'll complain. Apple seems to learn from its mistakes, though. I suspect they just won't have such a complicated rollout nexttime. :)

Touch firmware availability

My iTunes says that 1.1.4 is now the current version, after recently saying that 2.0 was available? I guess they took it down.

There is no rhyme or reason to it. You can disconnect your iPod and re-connect or quit and restart iTunes and sometimes it will say 2.0 is available and sometimes it will say you have the latest version already.

Attribute it all to overloaded server weirdness. My last error message said "we could not process your iTunes request due to current weather conditions in your area."

Kidding.

I have the same problem. All I know is that you have to zip the file (by right click, compress) and I did that already but I'm still stuck.

Anyone know what to do next?

howd ya put it into dfu mode

1. Turn on your iPod (in my case it would only get as far as displaying the Apple logo
2. Hold the power and home buttons down (the iPod will power off after 10 seconds, but keep holding those buttons down)
3. After the iPod powers off, release the power button (but keep holding the home button down)
4. After a couple more seconds, you should hear that magical “ding dong” that means the iPod is coming back alive, and that Windows has detected it. You may even see a little “New hardware” popup in Windows. It is now safe to release the home button, and your iPod is in DFU mode.
5. Now iTunes will see it as a DFU’ed iPod and should ask you to automatically restore its firmware.
6. iTunes has to download the new firmware, and it takes a while, so go make a sandwich.

From a Google Search, come on people. This is windows im sure a million mac guides are out there.
