Interesting.. It's showing the 2.0 update again, but it won't actually let me go to the store. Guess it's borked.

I presume that Apple took the Update completely off their system as part of the preparation for 2.0.

i think its actually cuz their server is all *beeped up* thats why it doesnt ask u to pay when u try the firmware link and why youtube didnt work. I guess it just couldnt check if u bought the january pack bc the server didnt response

That actually makes sense. You're probably right. Although, the problem was happening yesterday, when the servers weren't quite as bogged (or were they?).

I'm pretty sure 1.1.4 is not the same thing as the January Update. The January Update is just an add-on to 1.1.4.

Also, here's exactly what happened with the January Update: Apple pulled it off iTunes on June 9, when 2.0 was announced, presumably for the reasons you stated above. However, after that, people who had bought it previously and subsequently restored their iPods would still have the Update. This changed yesterday (or the day before) when people who restored their iPods could not get the Update back. I presume that Apple took the Update completely off their system as part of the preparation for 2.0.

Edit: Some people are saying today that they can get the Update back after a restore, which was the case before late this week.

Wrong. The 5 applications are actually in the 1.1.4 firmware, but buying the £12.99 update had the 'key' to unlock it. When you bought it, it transferred a small file to the iPod with a key in to unlock the features. The file then stay's on your computer with your iPod's serial number in, and when restoring it returns. I restored my iPod yesterday and my January Update showed up. It's a bit of a on-off case, just keep pressing check for update and sync and such and it will re-appear :)

Is anyone having trouble running some of the Apps like WHERE. It says it's compatible with the iPod Touch, but then it searches for your location. How did Apple approve such an App. I thought they would at least give you a box to input your location.

It uses the WiFi locate me feature that is built in on Maps. Although if you are not in an area that supports the locate me feature, then it does you no good.

Oh, okay. Thanks. I'll have to try restoring again when I get home.

This is what i did. I am not sure if it will work with your itouch

January Update NOT Restoring

The January Update does NOT always automatically restore, as I found out last week. And if all I needed after my restore was a little code from iTunes, I suspect they could have given it to me, but they couldn't. My understanding is that the software itself is stored in a different place on the HD than much of your iTunes stuff (at least in XP), and that had been wiped out when my HD died.

Oh, well. Once 2.0 is up, it won't matter anyway, will it?

I downloaded the 2.0 software for iPod, but Safari extracted it and now it's just a folder... if I add .ipsw to the end it stays a folder and if i compress it, then uncompress it it still doesn't work, it only works if i compress it and remove .zip and add .ipsw but then it's still compressed so iTunes can't read it. Help?

I guess I'll find out soon enough, but I'll through the question out anyway.

There are 3 iPod touches in my household. Will one $9.99 upgrade work for all three iPods?

Random question

I was just wondering if international iphones, like those in China, show China when Google Maps is opened or if all of them show the United States first. Anyone know?

Oh My God...
I think my iPod is screwed...

I was trying to downgrade from 2.0 to 1.1.4, DFU mode, iTunes 7.7.

And guess what! Unknown error (30)

I really need help.

Just got off the phone with tech support.

The guy told me that It's probably going to be until monday when the server finally clears up and we will be able to download the software.

He says it's working fine, and the download link is fine, but it's the tens of thousands of people trying to buy it at once.

Haha, he was like, "No, it's totally our fault that this is happening.
I guess that's what happens when an Apple product is released for the Apple fans to buy".

So, he said that I should just quit trying for now, and maybe I can squeeze in a download tomorrow, but he said Monday is when it should all clear up.

If you want the link for the software update that works, check my profile and visit my "home page url". It is on my site.

(I did this so no one would take it down)

I have downloaded this, iTunes attempts to extract it and then gives an error message. Basically I can't get this to install manually from 1.14.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Take it out of DFU mode with ZiPhone... then wipe the iPod from the Reset iPod settings in Prefs on the iPod and try again :)

ZiPhone is searching the iPod, but It can´t find it.

Also says that putting normal mode into iPods with DFU already installed can´t change it to normal mode...

Here's how I understood it:

Pull the zip file out of the trash.
Delete the .zip suffix so you're left with .ipsw
Hold down alt(option) on the 'restore' button in iTunes and locate the 2.0 .ipsw file

But from there I just get an error saying it won't install on my iPod touch (running 1.14).

MONDAY!!! That's just unreasonable. I can understand them having problems and not being able to get it out today, but why don't they just rent some extra space from Akamai for the time being.

-We had to wait after the September launch for web apps.

--Then they said the SDK would be out in February.

---When they released it in early march, they said it would be active in June.

----In June when they just demoed stuff, they said July 11.

-----It is JULY 11. It has almost been a whole year of waiting, putting things off, and then not meeting their own deadlines. This is just bad customer service.

They could be like Microsoft and release products way to soon. Examples include: Windows ME, Windows Vista (until SP1) and Xbox 360. (Heating Issues...didn't test before release!!)
