Official vs. torrent / ipsw restore

Hello all.

I've been following this one closely.

Can anyone tell me;

If I update through iTunes (officially), does the process also wipe all my music? I have 25gb of music shared between 3 different computers, so I've held out on the "manual" update.

It just occured, though, that the iTouch official update (vs. the iPhone) may wipe all my music, too. If that's the case, I may as well just proceed w/ the manual update, as I'll have to start reloading all my music from scratch, anyway.

Anyone who has managed to get the official (paid) update..... can you please help me here?

Thanks in advance.

The official update will wipe out your iPod, however I think apple is allowing a 1 time backup to users..I don't know how this works since I can't get the official update but its been discussed through articles and forums that the official requires a wipe.

Oooh
IDK how exactly this works but I watched my Dad update his iPhone this morning (one of the lucky ones) and what it did was it backed up everything, wiped it, and then it said "restoring music and videos to Jim's iPhone", but not like how a restore is usually done, it was just a normal progress bar without details of what songs/videos were being copied.

Does anyone else find it a little funny that the name of this thread is "iPod Touch 2.0 Firmware Update (Almost) Live"? And it was posted at 7:36AM EST? Over 13 hours ago?!?!?!

:eek:At present iTunes is ' Preparing iPod for Software Update' .......I used the torrent I d/loaded............I wont post the link until I'm 100% sure it works guys..........Keep Ya Posted

EDIT : 'Updating iPod Software'.........Current status
EDIT2 : 'Varifying iPod Software...
EDIT3: 'Updating iPod Firmware'
EDIT4: Wahoo............All done.....Just going through the restore process but it def is installed as the App store was on my homepage before I started the restore.....Only 21GB of media to transfer....

[edit: look guys, you can't distribute this app]

I can confirm this works, I'm running the 2.0 firmware. I downloaded it through TBP though (They're the exact same file size)

It DOES wipe your music and files, but not your icon positions or web links if you backed them up.

sad situation

My situation is sort of sad. I managed to get the unofficial download link from a comment on Gizmodo and successfully downloaded it on a computer. I believe it's the same one being released. So, iTunes doesn't work on the computer I downloaded the firmware on, but I can't move it to the computer with the good iTunes that syncs with my iPod touch. BTW, the link there is dead now, reporting unauthorized access.

None of my flash drives are home and I have no writable CDs. Sort of desperate. I'm willing to pay the $10 for the firmware, but I guess I have to wait. Having the exact same problems as everyone else.

I gotta update soon, or I'll change my mind about updating and keep 1.1.4. C'mon Apple, I'll pay you $20, for the firmware and Super Monkey Ball!

WHO SAID THAT. It better not. GRR

Straight from the mouth of the beast
"Normally if you choose to update, the iPhone or iPod touch software is updated but your settings and media are not affected. If your device currently has a software version prior to 2.0 (1.x) and you are updating to software version 2.0 or later, all data on your device will be erased in order to perform install the new software."

I'm sure iPod Touch users are no different since the devices are essentially the same as far as operating system.

I think they should at least give a discount or a free game app or something for havin us wait so damn long...
