How much will iPod touch 2.0 cost?

They still aren't forcing you to do anything. You can make the decision to walk away from the device if this is objectionable to you.

dave

Shouldn't have to deal with Adware from my preferred computing giant.

So because you allegedly prefer Apple products, they should cater to your every whim and base their marketing/sales practices on whatever baseless idea you have that day?

Makes perfect sense. With brilliance like that, the rest of us can only be left to wonder why you aren't the CEO of a major corporation.

This isn't the same situation, but if you want to go there... Do you think MacBook Pro owners should get Leopard for free because their machines cost more than MacBooks?

I agree with that point.

I think the upgrade will be free because I will hack it.

If Apple has a problem with that then they can **** themselves :p

So you think it's just fine for Apple to have an advertisement that pops up every time I sync my iPod and cannot be permanently disabled without a purchase? Mind you, it disables automatic syncing.

You are a complete idiot.

Ahh, name-calling: the last-ditch effort of a loser.

Guess we're both at our wits-end, then?

I have continually made valid arguments against this particular update fee and continually, the best defense the Apple apologists have presented is "cry-baby" and "you knew what you were buying"

You cannot be reasoned with. I honestly think that if you support Adware, you are an idiot.

So if I disagree with your socialistic demonization of Apple that makes me an apologist? Funny. And I can be reasoned with, but your arguments are neither rational nor valid. They are simply a demand for a handout. As for the "adware"...see above.

Please keep calling me names. Knowing people like you disagree with me to the point of acting like a child makes me know I'm right.

Fixed in firmware 1.1.4? Convenient. I'm sure they got a lot of purchasers with this "bug."

No. It was an iTunes Store bug. It was fixed 4 or 5 days later.

I don't even know if it took that long. That was just the next time I tried to sync. I hit "no thanks" and haven't been reminded since. Auto sync works fine.

But...but...but!!! Apple is an evil, greedy corporation! They only want to make money!

As long as one person buys the new update, Apple will have already started making money. Which means, they are happy. This also attracts more customers to buy the iPod touch now that it has more capabilities.

By the way...has anyone noticed the new "Bookmarks" in Safari in 1.1.4? I heard no one talk about it, yet it was there. Under Bookmarks, there were three new choices:
1. Open New Tab (Simply opens a new tab)
2. Play Flash (This was being used by that Flash transitioning website)
3. Find In Text (Such as finding the word "dog" in a website)

My iPod is Jailbroken, but I've had to restore it since then, and now its gone! Hmm, little fishy. (I am back to being Jailbroken btw)

3. Most people rent movies from the Apple TV, thus being a source of income for Apple. That's all the update really added, anyway besides a new interface.
You do realize that the entire point of this upgrade is to let iPod touch owners buy software from the iTMS of which Apple will get 30% right?

Anyways, I'm guessing that it'll be $20 but will include the 5 app 1.1.3 updates with it, and be either free or $2-3 if you already bought the 1.1.3 unlock.

Of course it is Apple's prerogative to make money. What business would they be without that goal? I'm not arguing they should give the January Update out for free, but the nagscreen which hung around from January 15th to February 21st was inexcusable.

So, I'm fine with Apple selling applications, though their timing was unquestionably a business move; sell a ton of Touches over the Christmas holiday and then get $20 back from as many users as possible less than a month later. Makes sense, but if Microsoft had done it there would have been a public outcry.

But, Apple is now offering one or two updates to each application we have already purchased (either by update or new iPod) and the Appstore. I disagree with charging for the updates to the applications and the Appstore. If Apple is required by accounting to charge for the 2.0 update because of the new features added, if should really be a 'nominal' charge; $1.99 max.

I agree with you that the AppleTV upgrade being mainly to rent movies is not really a valid point.

However, while the app store is a major point to the 2.0 software, the enterprise features are also a considerable upgrade. And I would be willing to bet that Apple will include some major consumer features when the 2.0 upgrade is released.

Also, Apple has stated that they will be running the app store to break even, so it's not going to be a major profit center for them.

Ummm... you don't know that. We already know of enterprise features, AppStore, MS Exchange, and Parental Controls in 2.0. That doesn't mean that we know what will be in the final version of it. There's probably more that they haven't told us yet, I expect to hear more details at WWDC.

And on the iTunes store, the developer/publisher has always received a cut of about this size when someone buys something. But movie rentals turn a greater profit on each dollar. Yet with server upkeep, and the need to hire a team to work the iTunes support and upkeep, it's not a very profitable business. With many people that will choose to get apps on there for free, I can't really see the AppStore as a very profitable part of Apple, Inc. It will make money, yes, but not that much. Steve and friends won't suddenly be rolling in cash because of this.

The last time I checked, 10.5.2 didn't really turn out any new features will. That was an update, iPhone/iPod 2.0 is an upgrade. There's a difference.

Reminds me of SpeedDownload 5...

Regardless, 2.0 could just as easily be 1.1.5. The features that Apple has advertised it as containing are simply updates to existing application, and not on a 10.4 - 10.5 scale.

You don't even know what's coming in 2.0 in full yet. You seem to only know what one feature is and when comibined with the word "fee," nobody likes the combo...

ActiveSync, Remote Wipe, Parental Controls, and the App Store are not just updates. And that's just the features that we know about now. I think most reasonable people would consider the support of an SDK worthy of being an upgrade. At least 1.2. But 1.1.5? That would just be ignoring the huge amount of work that would go into the features that we know about so far.

I know everything the company has told the public and you're right, I don't think there should be a fee for what they've advertised. If there is a fee, well, I hope it is indeed nominal.
