looks like the white iphone 4 will be released then too

What's the point? It would basically be the iPhone, and assuming you got this device, you would probably own a cell phone. So you would have two separate devices along with two bills, one for phone and the other for data, that would most likely be about the same as an iPhone bill. Plus the iPhone is subsidized in cost.

maybe hes/she is happy with their current plan and cell phone?

Besides data plans are becoming prety cheap now.

Yes, exactly. I'd believe iLife in August. Maybe iPad with iOS 4. But definitely not anything iPod until after the promo ends on September 7.

Doesn't matter. Apple has had iPod events before the promotion ran out. However, they always stipulate that it's the older generation iPods that get the rebate, not the newly released ones (and that's also why they spill out EXACTLY which models qualify for the rebate on their website).

ipad isnt shipping until august 16th

thought I would add that my iPad order is not shipping until the 16th of august and i receive it n the 19th. weird considering I ordered it the 2nd of august

How would it steal thunder? how would it be "stupid" ? Its technically the same thing. a device that handles all your media. It will be stupid to have a event this month and then have an event next month. It costs money to run all those lights. Costs money for the media to spend air tickets, the gas, rent a car etc to get down to the campus and to be honest its pointless to have an event for a single item like the Apple TV. The iPhone was a single event but see, the iPhone is a much larger product then the Apple TV.

money doesn't grow on trees. Even though Apple has billions of dollars, i'm sure they dont want to spend it on lighting for two events that could simply be merged since both products SHARE THE SAME MEANING. A multimedia device.

Because then they will report about other things in media too. What you want them to do is obviously to speculate about the announcement before (if they introduce it on an iPod event nobody will think about anything else), and then after the announcement you want them to report heavily on one product instead of a little on more products. The cost for the event is tiny compared to the free marketing they get. Any other company would kill to get the same kind of coverage of a new product.

Of course the iPhone is bigger but they'll obviously want the Apple TV to become at least as big and that's all that is important.

So for someone like me that is starting as a student sep 1st and looking for a new mac with free iPod Touch should wait for this and iLife11 ?

A 3G data plan for the iPod Touch would be rather nice, though I doubt you'll ever see it. Nothing was more annoying than having to find a free WiFi hotspot when I wanted to use my Touch, and more often than not, the places I went either didn't have it or had it locked down. Having the iPhone, and a data connection everywhere I go, has been a wonderful experience. I could never go back to a Touch.

I can imagine if this conference does happen, they'll firstly talk about ios 4 for iPad then proceed on to the new iPods. I expect they may then reveal the new apple tv as the 'one more thing...' at the end.

iphone & ipod touch data only

It's not a crazy thing to want, my data plan only ipod touch. I'd love an iphone if I had the choice of a data plan only. Course AT&T's data only plans (not that there is one for the iphone, except a TAP plan for the deaf, but you have to prove you are deaf, is still $45/mo @ 2gigs) are still a little pricey if you ask me.

It's not that I like my current cell phone plan, it's that I don't want a cell phone. Crazy, I know. And I'm a youngish whipper-snapper, not grumpy grampa. But I still don't like being reached when-ever where-ever. I like my privacy. And just turning the phone off is no good, people know you have it, and get angry when you don't pick it up.

But for communications I would be up for email or text messgs.

Now with the Sprint Peel you could get a cheaper data plan (about $40) and with the Clear iSpot 4g/3g wifi hotspot you can get unlimited data plan on a month to month basis for $25. (This is how I think AT&T and Apple will loose money.)

It would be nice, I agree. I think it would round out the iOS devices nicely if the new version had 3G.

What if it was a Media Event for iLife update only?

with another Media Event later (Debut of September) for new iPods and iPads (including small size) with iOS 4 for iPad/iPod (including FaceTime).

no love for the apple TV? what ever happen to the rumors regarding the new ios unit?

Maybe that is why the iPod announcement is being bumped up to Aug, so they can have an AppleTV announcement in late Sept/early Oct? The 27" monitor comes out in Sept. That could be a clue.

Makes no sense. Apple doesn't make real money on iLife. It's used to sell hardware. Jobs has never has and I doubt would ever waste an Apple Event to just show off software. That would be like the boy who cried wolf.

Don't give me a previous gen camera in the new iPod touch, Apple. Give me that sweet camera from the iPhone 4. I don't care if the back of the iPod touch isn't tapered - I'll take it flat like the iPhone 4 if the hardware does what I need it to do.

Give me good quality footage and not the 3gs camera! :)

Well may be not everyone is as close minded as you.

Teen, "Daddy can I have an iPhone?"

Father taking it up the butt with an overcharged mortgage, "No!"

Facetime has just become the teen thing of the next generation. Brilliant marketing Apple!

is it ever possbile? because the back to sch promotion will not end until the beginning of sep right?

This is nothing new. The iPod touch has always had a younger demographic than the iPhone.

Also, the total cost of ownership is much higher with the iPhone ($199/299 + activation fee + 2-year contract here in the U.S.). The iPod touch is a one-time expense. So the father would indeed be saving money by purchasing the iPod touch for the kids.
