It's not a crazy thing to want, my data plan only ipod touch. I'd love an iphone if I had the choice of a data plan only. Course AT&T's data only plans (not that there is one for the iphone, except a TAP plan for the deaf, but you have to prove you are deaf, is still $45/mo @ 2gigs) are still a little pricey if you ask me.

It's not that I like my current cell phone plan, it's that I don't want a cell phone. Crazy, I know. And I'm a youngish whipper-snapper, not grumpy grampa. But I still don't like being reached when-ever where-ever. I like my privacy. And just turning the phone off is no good, people know you have it, and get angry when you don't pick it up.

But for communications I would be up for email or text messgs.

Now with the Sprint Peel you could get a cheaper data plan (about $40) and with the Clear iSpot 4g/3g wifi hotspot you can get unlimited data plan on a month to month basis for $25. (This is how I think AT&T and Apple will loose money.)

Ok, I can see where you're coming from. It would be kinda neat, but it's not going to happen. I think the market for it is just too small.

I'd love a large capicty touch. I'm building a large media collection and I want it with me at all times. I shouldnt have to suffer because some 13 year old who knows nothing about technology and only cares for what he wants tells me "just make playlists".

Sure i can get a classic, but i like the touch. I can keep my media on my iPad, or just install applications for the ipad.

I agree and disagree. One part of me says "Yes! Just what I wanted, data on my iPod touch! My life is now complete!" ;) But the other half of me says that the bottom line is that most people who have iPod touches are people who would like an iPhone but can't afford a data plan. Obviously, if people wanted and/or could afford data, they would've just bought an iPhone.

But there are some who are happy with their phone! Remember you are tied to a 2 year contract. Many don't want that!

Apple NEEDS to split the Sept event up this year. I also believe a MID-AUGUST event for the iPod Touch makes a LOT of sense...

August event:

1. Demo iOS 4.x for the iPad. Reveal exclusive new iPad only features.
2. Launch a new iLife and iWork suite as well as iWork for iPhone.
3. Demo the new iPod Touch focusing on the A4 chip, Retina display, 3 megapixel back camera with flash, and front facing camera for Facetime.

September event:

1. Launch iTunes X, with cloud streaming of audio/video. Major updates to iOS devices to support this.
2. New iPods including a smaller touch based Nano.
3. "One more thing": A new iOS based AppleTV the size of an iPhone, that supports the new cloud streaming, all the old features AND opens up the platform to the app store so now you can do Hulu, Netflix, etc. plus games etc. the sky is the limit. Price? $99-150.

why spit it up? How does it make sense? and Apple TV the size of the iPhone HA!tooo small. It will be the size of the mac mini. You cant fit anything with the iPhone size. Besides theres a reason its called Apple TV

There was an engadet rumor about this. It would be a streaming device (no storage) with the A4 ship. Something like that could easily be iPod touch-sized.

What's the point? It would basically be the iPhone, and assuming you got this device, you would probably own a cell phone. So you would have two separate devices along with two bills, one for phone and the other for data, that would most likely be about the same as an iPhone bill. Plus the iPhone is subsidized in cost.

So you're saying an iPad with 3G is pointless? If it utilized that same plan you could turn off the 3G whenever you don't need it. Can't do that with an iPhone.
Seems kind of silly in my opinion. Not everything needs to be small! Its a rumor from a typical apple fan whos obessed with super thin, super small things.

I agree Apple is obsessed with thinness too much, but a streaming device makes a lot of sense. If it uses the A4 chip there would be no need/reason for it to be big.

Wait am I missing something?...where the hell did that come from? WTF does it have to do with anything he said? Or is there something you would like to share with the class?

+1
Didn't get it when I read it, but I figured it was just me being slow.:p

One, the iPad is not related to the Apple TV. The Apple TV is ment and designed for well guess what? a TV! Its ment to have ports such as Component, HDMI etc so you can hook it up to a TV. (after all, its called Apple TV for a reason) Other wise it wouldnt be what it is but rather just an iPod touch

Two the current Apple Tv can stream, but remember, its called Apple TV for a reason, and the iphone design would be too small to hold the wifi chip, full size HDMI etc. Apple won't do mini display unless they come out with their own 42 or 55" TV. most TVs have HDMI and they wont be able to stream the video wirelessly unless you have a computer hooked up to the TV, and you just bounce off the computer and even then that would be pointless as you can just use the media though iTunes.

I might be getting an iPod nano in a few months since my Classic screen is screwed up due to being left in a hot car  so updated Nanos before I buy would be nice but touches would be eh...i already have a constant data connection with my smartphone so I don't want an iPod touch

Why split it up? Well for starters there is way to much l listed to demo even in 2 hours. If you demo too much on one day the media also won't cover it all in the paper in the next day which hurts Apple. Also I think Apple wants to make a big deal out of the iPod Touch and the Facetime/Retina display (Facetime will be big with teens, a huge user base of the iPod touch) so that has to be the core of one event.

The other event is all about "the cloud" and iTunes X/10 and how it works with Apple devices, in particular the iOS devices. They want the media to pick up on that and the new glamour device will be the new Apple TV, again the size of an iPhone OR SMALLER (as it will have no screen or battery) with only 16 GB of onboard storage. It will be designed to stream via 802.11n content off your home computer or networked hard drives and most importantly it will stream content from Apple's new streaming service in the cloud, again the theme of that event. The other big news is that Apple TV will no longer be a "closed" platform but rather as an iOS device it will support the app store (with iOS apps designed for the TV) so Netflix, Hulu, Twit, etc. can put their apps on their (streaming again of course) as well as games sort of like Xbox Live arcade. Price will be very, very, very, very low and will be a huge X-mas seller at a $99-150 price point.

1. iPhone's and iPod touches have bluetooth AND wifi packed in there today. Also the "motherboard" of an iPhone 4 is less than 1/3rd of the size of the phone, the rest being the battery (not needed in an AC powered Apple TV) so the size of the new Apple TV can be TINY!!! example of a phone with HDMI: http://www.new-cell-phones.org/nokia-n8-cell-phone-with-hdmi-port.html and now an picture of the size of the iPhone 4 motherboard complete with 802.11n wi-fi AND bluetooth... http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone-4-Teardown/3130/2

2. HDMI out will likely be the ONLY output on the new Apple TV and many Android phones support this now in iPhone sized phones so this is not a limiting factor at all for size.

You obviously dont remember (or too young for the later two) the iphone preview event in Macworld 2007. The Intel switch preview from WWDC 2005 or even the OSX 10.0 preview from macworld (?) 2000. those were large events.

1. I understand that, but for being a media device for your TV its still a bit small. what about an IR sensor. You need a remote. I could see a possisble iPod touch/iPhone app for a remote for the Apple TV or even a device thats multitouch for the remote. (no physical buttons)

2. That will require people to go out and buy new cables. We know Apple. They wont include cables.

Man what happened to the simplicity of just music on a music device?

iPod touch with a data plan?! Are you serious? **** THAT! Buy an iPhone if you want a 3g data plan. Can't afford it? Too bad. We ARE in a bad economy.

I want an iPod touch for music. I like the spacious touchscreen. a Nano touch? No space.

Man people ask for too much these days.

I am 34 and my first computer was a Macintosh 128k in 1984 as a gift for my first communion (still remember my parents giving me a Macintosh apple, a real apple, at my communion party and seeing if I could figure out what it meant for a gift. Alas I didn't quite get the point until it was explained to me but I remembered the recent hype of the new computer debuting), you know the ones signed in the interior plastic by the designers of the first Macintosh. I have seen every one of the events you mention but it proves my point, all those events had ONE major focus. For example the 2007 iPhone launch event certainly did mention the Apple TV, but the demo was short, the Apple TV had previously been previewed a few months before, AND media covered the iPhone almost exclusively the next day with hardly a mention of anything else Steve spoke about.

The iPod touch is a major device for Apple, it represents a large percentage of iOS devices and I think Apple feels Facetime will be incredibly huge as it essentially bakes in communications (video at that) into a non-cellphone device and they will want to highlight that. Combine the rumors of a new iLife suite and the leaked images of Pages, Numbers, Keynote for IPHONE/IPODTOUCH and you have a feature packed event that in general keeps to a theme. If and when Apple moves into the "cloud" with wireless sync/backup, streaming music/video (including for example your entire library etc. from the Lala purchase) and changes the AppleTV to an iOS device (the key strings for the mystery AppleTV iOS device have already been spotted in the code of iOS 4) all fit a theme that Apple will want to spend time exploring in detail for us and the media without having the distraction of iLife, iWork, and the hardware details of the latest iPod touch and its facetime system to explain at the same event. The idea that Apple would demo an all new iPod touch, new iPods (including likely major design changes to the Nano class) and a long anticipated major cloud computing push via the 10th edition of iTunes, and an all new from the ground up Apple TV in one event, let alone demos of iLife, perhaps iWork, iWork apps for iPhone, and developer previews of iPad iOS 4.x in the same event seems to lack believability.

I appreciate that folks here can have different opinions and certainly my predictions could be totally wrong but I think your tone in your last post was getting a bit childish as you snipe at me dismissing my views of that of youth or ignorance when I hope I have demonstrated that I have at least some background watching Apple for a quarter of a century. In the end it doesn't truly matter how these products are announced but that they are at some point and maintain the Apple quality and forward thinking we have grown to expect.
