Disappointing? This has been an excellent year for Apple. The iPhone has been a big success, people love the new iMacs/iLife/iWork for the most part, and Apple is gaining market share like crazy.

sorry..u misunderstood me. i agree with you on those points..but i mean disappointing in other ways. like the leopard secret features were pretty lame. huge lack of hardware updates etc.

basically what im saying is..something feels different this yr. ive been an avid mac fan for about 10 years now but to me Apple seems to be slipping ever so slightly.

Hmm, now the mock-up of the new nano they posted appears to be gone as well? Engadget's mock-up is still posted...

First they replaced "iPod Touch" by "iPod XXXX". Then they have removed the iPod nano and iPod Touch posts  Some people in Apple must be really angry

Yeah, Apple Legal sure seems to have their hands full with the 9to5 crew lately. If these iPod rumors are indeed true then that will make things even more interesting!

and it's true the 9to5mac guys have been anything but discreet lately...

Exactly. As I said, I guess we'll find out in the upcoming weeks whether their iMac leak was just a fluke, or if they do indeed have some impressive insider information. I'm still not convinced, but we'll know soon enough.

In the following days Apple legal will have 9to5mac as their homepage. 9to5mac have been spilling a lot of Apple beans the latest two weeks.

If the new high capacity iPod doesn't have tactile controls, a useful remote or some other way of operating it without looking at the screen I will not be interested.

Such a remote already exists- the Apple radio remote. It uses the dock connector and adds FM and a Shuffle-like control cluster.

Flash memory is expensive. Replace the flash with a hard drive and take out the parts that make it a phone and that's the $100 difference right there (which on Apple's end is a lot less than $100 difference). They could easily do it for $299.

And as far as AT&T revenue goes... I'm not understanding how that comes into play. Are you suggesting that apple needs that money to not lose money on the iphone? Or that it somehow keeps the cost of the iphone down? I think its highly unlikely that that money affects production costs at all. Only microsoft would release a product that couldn't pay for itself.

1. For Apple to profitably sell a $299 iPod, they have to make it around $150 or so. iSuppli's estimate for the cost of the 8GB iPhone is $265, so they have a ways to cut to sell a similar product at $299. Last time they estimated the 30GB iPod costs $150, so there is an obvious trend (50% margin.) They are estimating Apple's volume price for components based on standard pricing, so they are pretty educated guesses.

According to the iSuppli estimate (which is not 100% accurate but better than anyone here knows), the 4GB iPhone uses $24 worth of Samsung NAND flash, while the 8GB uses $48. In the original teardown of the video iPod, they tagged the cost of the 30GB hard drive at $65. You can assume it has dropped in price in the last 2 years, but it's certainly not free. The phone part was actually quite cheap- $15 or $20. So where's the $100 cost savings?

Like I said, I'll be super impressed (and happy) if Apple can do a fullscreen touch-based OS X 30GB iPod for $299, even without the Wifi. It might be more possible to add wifi to the deluxe version that costs $100 more, because the larger HD doesn't cost that much more (depending on which size they go with.)

2. Of course Apple doesn't 'need' the AT&T money. But obviously it is part of the revenue stream for iPhone product category as a whole. Apple the company has certain profit margin targets, and when you know you have downstream revenue coming from the product, you can sell the product at a lower profit margin than your other products. I'm not saying that Apple's margins on the iPhone are necessarily less (they actually seem to be more), just that there are additional revenues that they won't be getting with an iPod (of course, both can generate additional iTunes store revenue, although their margins on iTunes store are pretty low.)

Is it just me... or do a lot of people in this thread not understand the way memory and storage come in certain increments?
2-4-8-16-32 etc. That goes for hard drives too!

Oh, they do, didn't know that :D , but then how did they have 5,10,and20 HDs on older iPods?

Here are my guesses:

iPod shuffle--no hardware changes externally, but there will now be a 2 GB model in addition to a 1 GB model. 1 GB will now cost US$70 and 2 GB model will cost US$100.

iPod nano--no hardware changes externally, but 2 GB model dropped, 4 GB model in silver case becomes low end model, 8 GB model becomes "mainstream" model with up to ten different color cases, and new 16 GB model in black and red case only. Prices will be lowered (US$150 for 4 GB, US$200 for 8 GB, and US$250 for new 16 GB model).

iPod nano video--new model that looks like a 2G nano "writ large" with wider case (but same sized Click Wheel) that accommodates a display almost as large as the 5.5G iPod so it can play back videos. It will be available in 8 GB and 16 GB flash memory storage versions in five different color cases. Cost will be US$250 for 8 GB model and US$299 for 16 GB model.

6G iPod video--all new model in a case about the same size as 5.5G iPod that uses a fullscreen display with touchscreen interface. It will be available with 80 GB and 120 GB hard disk storage. Cost will be US$350 for 80 GB model and US$399 for 120 GB model.

soo its the internets. point taken
if you look on the flickr account or below you can see the images that are on the "ipods" screens in their full glory proving i made them okay?

Um... The GUI needs some work... It is a little cluttered, and the different view buttons are too small and too close together, and there is no need for a full screen button lol

The 2,4,8,16,32 is referring to FLASH, Hard Drives were like 5,10,20,30,60,80,120, etc.

OK so everyone is saying this is going to be a phoneless iPhone. Does that mean its going to have a camera and built in Wi-Fi? Will I be able to check my e-mail on my iPod? Is the iPod going to have a safari on it? Will it have weather and stocks?

Just wondering.

I think you'd be spot on if you change a few things:

1. The Shuffle has far too many colors listed. Max of 5 would be made, beyond that it is too cumbersome to manufacture as well as for consumers to pick.

2. I don't know about exclusive colors in general. Not a big "Apple" thing.

3. Nano has one too many colors too, and perhaps orange instead of one of the other colors? Also, 4 capacities are a bit much, perhaps drop the cheap 2GB and make the 4GB the low end (maybe $150?). Finally, $210 and $270 are sort of odd prices, but who cares it's not a science :p

4. iPod Video: again an extra color or two, but perhaps we'll see a name change to avoid confusion with the iPod Touch in the consumer mindset?

5. iPod Touch. I wouldn't bet on 3 colors, probably just black and white would be fine. In addition, I think there will be two capacities maximum (60GB and 100GB seem very likely). This is going to be the flagship iPod, not as "accessible" as the 5th gen was (similar to how the iPod Photos were expensive while they still had the monochrome iPods out). Also, WiFi... Maybe. I'm still not sold that Apple will do the beaming of music like the Zune... it's very gimmicky.

Nice job though, pretty realistic ideas :)

iPod shuffle
Now with 2gb capacity. same price/colours.

iPod nano
Now with 4gb, 8gb, 16gb capacities. same price/colours.

iPod mini
aka phatpod. 16gb and 32gb flash capacity. black, silver, wine red, light blue, light green. Mac OS X. Thin as the nano, screen is the same as the 5.5g ipod. Priced between nano and iPod touch, possibly $249 and $339

iPod Touch
Multitouch device, stereo bluetooth, no wifi. Mac OS X. 60gb and 120gb capacity. $369 and $449. 1 colour - black.

____

I think this is what we'll most likely get.
The reason I think they will add stereo bluetooth and not wifi in the ipod touch is that they will want to differentiate it from the iPhone. Capacity alone will not be enough to get iphone users to want to buy the new ipod. However if it has stereo bluetooth it dangles another carrot to those who want to listen to their music cord-free. They won't have wifi because as another user said before, why would someone who has an iphone get an ipod if they are basically the same device.

In addition, I believe Apple see future growth for the phone market not so much ipod. If they can get people to buy the ipod with similiar functionality to the iphone but without some killer features (wifi, phone, safari, email), they will eventually get those people to swap over to an iphone. If they included wifi in the ipod, they won't see many people desiring to get an iPhone, and that is not what Apple want.

The only compelling reason to have a widescreen display on a PMP is for video. Sure Coverflow is cool and all that, but it is not required. If you're going to make a device for video, then you either need some serious storage space or an easy method of switching out files. Since adding WiFi would make a widescreen touch iPod too close to the still-new-and-not-even-released-worldwide' iPhone, I'm thinking Apple is going with a larger HDD, probably the 120 and possibly also the new 160GB 1.8" HDD.

Also, since there is not really much need for a 3.5" widescreen device with only 16 or 32GB of storage, I'm betting the product line will go something like this:

iPod Shuffle:
2GB $69
unchanged except lower price

iPod Nano:
4GB $129
8GB $179
same capacity, lower price, fits a niche
video enabled, but same form factor and screen size
maybe freshen up the colors

iPod Mini: Prodigal Son returns!!
16GB $249
32GB $299
flash-based
this is the stubby thing we can't find pics of anymore

iPod Touch
120GB $349
160GB $399
HDD-based iPhone-ish beastie but no WiFi folks

If you want the whole WiFi enchilada, you'll be buying an iPhone for the foreseeable future.

Apple Paris will see the Euro launch of the iPhone, hopefully accompanied by some iTMS goodness. Spread the love, Steve-o!

Yes. Apple have had a great success. But we don't want them getting too big. 10% of the computer market but certainly no more. Read what Daring Fireball says. He KNOWS. :apple:
