Hi all, first-time MR forum poster but I've been following iTouch-related threads in here with a beady eye for the past week or so, so I thought I'd give something small back to the community. I just thought you might be interested to hear my experience of trying to get an iPod Touch in the UK:
I pre-ordered a week ago today, on the 12th of September. I was given the usual 'shipping by' date of the 28th, with delivery to be expected on the 1st-2nd of October; these dates never changed through the duration of the pre-order.
However, starting yesterday I started to read reports of the iPod being available in UK retail stores, so seeing as I live in London, I thought that maybe I'd try and get hold of one from a store. Which, today, I did. I travelled in to London and got to the Regent Street store at about 6:10pm; I spent a few minutes trying to pick a decent laptop bag, so when I queued up to buy the bag and iPod, it was probably about 6:20pm - alas, I was told they had no more 16GB iPods in stock. (They did have some 8GB ones though.)
But I know my way around London well, so I decided to go up to Brent Cross as they're open until 8pm, and try and get one there. When I walked in it was nice and quiet (in comparison to the very busy Regent Store), and they did indeed have both the 8GB and 16GB models in stock - this was at about 7:10pm tonight. There was however one complication: when I pre-ordered online, I used the £20-off coupon code that I found in one of the threads here. I asked if I could use that in the store, and the guy hanging around by the iPods said I couldn't, but I said that I'd read that managers were generally willing to allow people to, so he directed me to the manager. Whom I explained my situation to (having pre-ordered then found the stores got them in first, etc. etc.) and he was
only too happy to give me the discount in the store - though it probably helped that I'd printed off a copy of my order status from Apple's website.
So, the morals of this story:
- If you live in London, try the 'outer' stores - that is, Brent Cross or Kingston, as Regent Street sold out quickly.
- If you used an online coupon code for your pre-order, just ask to speak to the manager in the store, take a copy of your order status (showing the discount), and he or she will be very happy to take care of it for you.
