Sorry... thought we were talking about the Uk store... nevermind

oh sorry for the confusion, we are talking about the UK store, but when you said the Apple store isnt shipping, I thought you meant it as a generalisation of all countries online stores.

Hi all, first-time MR forum poster but I've been following iTouch-related threads in here with a beady eye for the past week or so, so I thought I'd give something small back to the community. I just thought you might be interested to hear my experience of trying to get an iPod Touch in the UK:

I pre-ordered a week ago today, on the 12th of September. I was given the usual 'shipping by' date of the 28th, with delivery to be expected on the 1st-2nd of October; these dates never changed through the duration of the pre-order.

However, starting yesterday I started to read reports of the iPod being available in UK retail stores, so seeing as I live in London, I thought that maybe I'd try and get hold of one from a store. Which, today, I did. I travelled in to London and got to the Regent Street store at about 6:10pm; I spent a few minutes trying to pick a decent laptop bag, so when I queued up to buy the bag and iPod, it was probably about 6:20pm - alas, I was told they had no more 16GB iPods in stock. (They did have some 8GB ones though.)

But I know my way around London well, so I decided to go up to Brent Cross as they're open until 8pm, and try and get one there. When I walked in it was nice and quiet (in comparison to the very busy Regent Store), and they did indeed have both the 8GB and 16GB models in stock - this was at about 7:10pm tonight. There was however one complication: when I pre-ordered online, I used the £20-off coupon code that I found in one of the threads here. I asked if I could use that in the store, and the guy hanging around by the iPods said I couldn't, but I said that I'd read that managers were generally willing to allow people to, so he directed me to the manager. Whom I explained my situation to (having pre-ordered then found the stores got them in first, etc. etc.) and he was only too happy to give me the discount in the store - though it probably helped that I'd printed off a copy of my order status from Apple's website.

So, the morals of this story:

  • If you live in London, try the 'outer' stores - that is, Brent Cross or Kingston, as Regent Street sold out quickly.
  • If you used an online coupon code for your pre-order, just ask to speak to the manager in the store, take a copy of your order status (showing the discount), and he or she will be very happy to take care of it for you.

I'm getting envious with all these storys about people just walking into stores... Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere! (North Northumberland to be precise) Not an apple store (or even Authorised Reseller) any where near!

yeah lol, I live near Newcastle, so no Apple stores up here.

But has anyone tried pre ordering from Play.com? Iv always had great results from them and bad delivery from Apple store online, so i might cancel my Apple store order and try Play if anyone thinks thats a good idea? I reckon we wont see our Touch's come in sept from Apple online, people have said you would but nah they are crap at delivering and that date is what they will stick to.

It was in stock in Regent Street but by 4pm yesterday the 16GB had sold out so I had a wasted journey. Their people expected more in this week though and suggested I call first. So this morning I did.

Five minutes on hold. Eventually:

"Hello?"
Ah good morning. Do you have any 16GB iPod touch units in stock today?
"No the iPod touch isn't out till the 28th of September."
Um, no, you had some yesterday.
"The iPod touch isn't out till the 28th of September."
You had them in yesterday, I sawthem, but you were out of 16gb models. You're not getting any more in?
"No, the touch is out on the 28th of September."
So you didn't have any yesterday?
"It's the 28th of September."
Right, I must have been blind yesterday. Well thanks a lot.
"Okay then."

WTF?

So I called back ten minutes later, different girl on the phone after just as long on hold. This time I was told that all the units they'd had were promotional sneaky advance sales connected to the iPhone launch and that now they were gone there would be no more till the 28th of September. That might be a good thing though, as I suspect the screens might be fixed by then...

Telephones at Apple Stores

The telephone answering at the Trafford Centre store is also abysmal - usually they seem not to bother, then randomly do pick it up. Weird as the Manchester Arndale store are always good at answering.

Any ideas of stock levels in Meadowhall?

Pity I can't walk in with my online order and get them to match that price (£20 off £235 promotion) :(
Just drove up to Meadowhall from Nottingham and picked up a 16gig, they looked like they had a pretty decent level of stock in the cupboard at 10am but the sales guy was not allowed to say exactly how many.
Tried to use my on line discount but the manager said she hadn't been told of any such discounts and had to pay full price. Hey ho!

Anyway, it's charging at the mo, so I'll get on with my work while I wait :)

Don't be worried. Apple has acknowledged the screen problem. By the time ours ship hopefully it'll be sorted.

That's the thing that's keeping me fairly indifferent to the fact that I don't have mine yet! I was fairly annoyed yesterday when I realised they'd started selling them, but if it means I get one with no screen problems then I'll be happy!

I am still slightly puzzled as to why some of the estimated delivery dates slipped back 2 or 3 days but the shipping date has remained the same though.

Yeah, that I would also like to know, but the Apple Rep Woman said 'Items usually take 3-5 Days but sometimes it could be 7' as a reason... which I didn't think was a good one.

Strange yours has been put back, because I ordered mine only a few days ago and it's still on for Oct 1-3.
Also, to people saying they wish they'd picked one up from the store...I would'nt bother. They REALLY arnt out untill 28th sept, the ones in the store are promotional ones and not for mass sale. That's why they've run out already, think about it if they really had them in store they would have enough to go round for at least a few weeks, as it is xmas 'soon'.
28th Sept is official date, people who have one now are either lucky or in possession of a possible faulty one. The ones that come after release day will probably be sorted and come on guys dont be so impatient it's only a couple of weeks! You didnt even know about an iPod Touch a few months ago!

Was at the glasgow store at 14:00 and the assistant said they only have 8gig models left. Was not sure when they would have more stock just that they might get more at the weekend.

Graham

Guess I got really lucky then. I called them and they said they had a fair number of both sizes in stock, so I never even asked about reserving one. Drove through from Edinburgh and got one no problem.

Well at least it stopped me from spending money on my card....(although technically I dont really need 16 gigs :) )I'll have to wait until i get back from holiday now.

Even more strangely it has happened only for you UK guys.
Me in Germany still got the original delivery date of Oct 1-2.

The first US online orders are being delivered now. If those ones are proper, we can safely assume the screen issue has been resolved.

can anyone confirm that the trafford centre store have 16 gigs instock please.
if so does anyone know if the screen issue (bought from trafford centre store) is there.
do you guys think if i go on staurday i will be able to pick a 16gig up?

Attention all UK buyers!

Argos has limited stock of both 8 and 16gb models of the touch in limited stock. GET THEM NOW  I have got mine and it will be shipped "for sure" Monday or even tommorow. I am quoting this from Argos' main warehouse!

Just a heads up for those that still don't know if they should get online or retail!

Just rang apple Trafford center and they told me that all ipod touches are sold out and so are arndale. Can someone confirm this.
:(
