I caved

Today i bought a 5gb iPod, Brand New, from The Apple Store in Melo Park, NJ. I just couldn't wait any longer. Anyway, the guy told me that Apple was finally getting 5gb iPods out since January. I honestly think there really isn't going to be a big iPod update anymore. If they do anything, it's going to be the introduction of the 40gb iPod. The 5gb is still there guys. I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy i have an iPod again!

If they were really coming back, wouldn't the online store have them? I think they found a box of them sitting in a warehouse and needed to get rid of them.

I went to "The Grove" Apple store in Los Angeles tonight and talked to an employee about the iPods. He said they no longer have 5GB iPods. I asked whether it would be dumb to buy an iPod tomorrow because within days new ones, such as a 40GB, might come out, or prices on the 10GB and 20GB might be lowered.

I knew that he couldn't tell me about Apple's plans even if he knew them, but I thought I might get a hint from the way he answered. He said that if I bought one now and Apple announced new models or new prices within 10 days, I could return the one I bought without paying a restocking fee as long as I then bought a new model or repurchased the same one for the lower price. In other words, they don't penalize when you buy just before a model upgrade or price drop.

For example, if on Friday they discontinue the 5GB iPod and reduce the 10GB iPod price to $299, Nitro230ft can switch from 5GB to 10GB for free.

Oh crude, I forgot to say this; when I got my first iPod in January there was no fee to return it, you just had to bring it back within 10 days. But, this time the guy gave me the reciept and explained how if I return it between now and the 22nd I would have to pay $29.90 (5% of the original cost)! That's really weird If you asked me. He said this was a New return policy Apple made. I think they don't want people returning new current iPods for revamped ones.....! But If they do update the iPod and a 10gb is only $30 more, I wouln't have a problem paying that because it's the same deal is if i were to buy a Refurbished 10gb.

Huh? Many companies are introducing new products. Last week, this week, next week... What information do you have that Apple is waiting out the war? The initial campaign may be over in a week or two, but sporadic fighting is likely to go on for months. It may be difficult to even decide when the war is officially "over."

I think the wait has more to do with the online music service.

Alright, I can't wait any longer. It's been over a month. Today or tomorrow, I am going to go down to Bestbuy, and get a 20 gig iPod. I would buy a refurbished one, but I am going to me on a long plane flight on monday, and would love to have all my music. So thats it. I'm done waiting. Time to buy. :D

Yes, and many companies introduce many more products than Apple, they don't require a big bang introduction. Introducing anything at the moment is nuts ... no one is buying anything. I'm not saying that the whole war needs to be wrapped up before Apple rolls out new products, but I expect nothing new until May.

But don't take my word for it ...

Retail Sales Fall 1.6% in February
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 11:33 a.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- War worries and snow storms kept shoppers away from the stores, driving down sales at the nations' retailers by 1.6 percent in February. The worst showing in 15 months was another ominous sign for the sputtering economy.

The drop in sales reported by the Commerce Department Thursday marked a big pullback by consumers from January, when sales rose by a modest 0.3 percent. The weakness in February was widespread, with losses reported for automobile dealers, electronics and appliance stores, apparel shops and other merchants. Building and garden supply stores posted a record drop in sales.

February's retail sales were weaker than economists were expecting. They were forecasting sales to fall by 0.5 percent.

The disappointing retail sales report, along with a troubling employment report released by the government last week, may heighten concerns that the economy could again fall into recession.

5GB ARE BACk

The Apple Store in the Mall of Short Hills NJ Just got a large shippment of 5gb iPods in Windows and Mac format. I think this proves that the 5gb ipod is back and was never really dead. Ok, it was dead but it came back like........oh i can't think of an example. But you get my point!

I know. Apple is just trying to get rid of the old iPods by aggravating us inpatient suckers into buying the current iPods by a series of planned delays. That must be it! :D

That's why Los Angeles ran out. The country must be tipped to the east and all the iPods slid into New Jersey.

Well, we're all just guessing, so it's as good a theory as any! ;)

well, after two months of reading these rumor sites i could stand it no more and bought a 10GB. I bought it from compusa with their little 2 year warranty thing. they said the warranty will allow me to exchange within 30 days, and it also allows me to get a refund if the price g oes down in the next 30 days. works for me.

I just ordered a 10gb ipod.. kinda feel off the waiting train because I havent had my cd walkman in over a month and I NEED NEED a portable music player and I wasnt about to go buy another cd play wasting my money because I knew I was gonna end up getting an ipod soon enough anyway and even though i know I have more cds that will go over 10gbs I still will be DAM WELL happy with 10gbs because Im used to a cd player that I only have 1 cd all day or maybe a few more if I feel like bringing them around in my pocket or something. Also this could be a good sign or maybe something everyone of you know but the guy I ordered from on phone I told if there was a way that I could have my ipod only ship once my powermac 1.42 is ready because no real point of having it around untill I can use it because this is going to be my first mac and I bought a mac ipod. Well the guy said this probably will not be ready to send out untill after your powermac, at least 7 days but probably not more longer at all for the ipod to be ready. Now come on we know NOT many people are buying ipods for there to be a back order on these, so somethings gotta be comming so maybe will any luck I'll get realy realy lucky and next tuesday new ipods will be announced my order will get bumped up to something even better. But hell Im gonna be so happy once I get my mac and ipod finally, been drooling over these things for a few years now

Here's from another one who couldn't resist any longer and bought an iPod (10 GB). I couldn't stand more wait. It's been 2 1/2 months!!!
... That, excluding the looong months before I could make the purchase.

I just hope it arrives soon  I can't wait to have it in my hands.
So know I am thinking of buying an iSkin for it (possibly an iSkin GLO). It that any good? or would I have enough with the included case?

And know, slightly off-topic, I have been waiting for so long, reading all these rumor sites and forums, that I wouldn't have believed I would get to know so much about Apple and their products. In my case, I hope my PC treats my iPod well (it better does). It's a pity Apple doesn't have a greater market share, like, say, 50-50 :)
There's an interesting text by Neal Stephenson called "In The Beginning Was The Command Line" (it can be easily found on the net; for instance, here: http://www.spack.org/index.cgi/CommandLine). The introduction is a good metaphor of the history of computers and operating systems, comparing them with cars; very amusing reading.

Well, forgive my babbling :D I'll keep visiting these sites; it's become some sort of a habit, a ritual when I get to my computer. Take care and happy waiting, don't despair. It's most probable that the new iPods are released the next tuesday, since I ordered mine this week. It never fails :)

I would bite the bullet and buy mine, but I've waited this long there is no turning back now. I have proved to myself I can live without it so whats a few more weeks (or months or whatever). My Discman and CD wallet suck, but they've been there for me through this whole ordeal.

So I will come out and say it, I hope it's this Tuesday and I will continue with this delusion until it happens.

Mike

ive got an igroove, which is similar.

ive got the simple frosted colour. unfortunately it wasnt available when i bought my ipod so now ive got lots of scratches on the back (i treat it as intended, not with kid gloves. it gets knocked around and keys scratch it. so how its lasted a year or so without any problems i dont know) but ill be ready when i get my 20gig one.
