That is the reason why I stay out of the Apple discussion area. But I don't think the term is an insult if you have a group of people that won't listen to reason.

Is calling someone "fat" ok if that person is actually fat? Is calling someone "stupid" ok if the person is stupid?

A Fanboy that just stirs the pot is just as much a troll in my book.

Not if they're only giving their opinion. A lot of new users truly think Apple can do no wrong and argue accordingly. It's still their opinion and they have a right to it, it doesn't matter how annoying you might think it is.

And again, what does calling them "fanboys" accomplish other then stirring the pot even more?

I don't think I have ever called anybody here a fanboy, but I have seen plenty.

I've never seen the term "fanboy" used in any other way other than derogatory unless the person is referring to him/herself. I agree with OP.

You're wrong. Just saying.

Those crazy mods.

Perhaps I'm just special. I haven't placed in TO for that yet. This highlights the larger issue which is the complete lack of consistency that exists. Even if every user was treated equally, which is far from the case, there would still be little consistency. If the PSRI was moderated like the rest of the forum, most of those in here would be in TO and if the rest of the forum was moderated like the PSRI.

You're brainwashed.

I'm tellin' Mom.

Can't we all get along all you fanboys with troll-like tendencies?

Damn doctors. :)

So, now we're suggesting that someone who essentially says "You're brainwashed" get a TO.

The problem is that a lot of the times someone gets called a fanboy they're just defending their point with actual logical arguments.

And even in a situation where someone is blindly defending Apple, what good does it do for someone to call them "fanboy"? It's just meant to stir the pot, it doesn't matter who's saying it.

We all might think their opinion is wrong and that they're brainwashed but they do have the right to their opinion and not being insulted by it.

When I first started getting into Macs, I defended them fiercely. But as time went on, and I got PCs too, I now see it as a personal choice. I like both, but Macs are better, imo.

I know, but it's an old thread and we never got any response from the mods. I think people do use it mainly as an insult but I want to know if there's any point in reporting it or not.

Ultimately I think it depends on how you use it. But I would like to know from the mods if this is something that should be reported or not.

Anything that seems insulting should be all means be reported, IMO. There's no way we can see all posts every day (I think there are between 4000 - 6000 posts made every day ). All reports are read, all mods and admins have access to them, and things do get discussed. A report is never wasted. :)

My problem is that usually the term "fanboy" is used in an argument when they just want to shut someone up. Someone may be defending Apple or an Apple product with very logical reasons but they will be called "fanboy" by people that just don't know how to participate in a rational discussion.

I have no problem in being a "fangirl", I have a problem with how the term "fanboy/girl" is used against people as an insult.

I agree that this is often the case. I can't bring to mind now an example where "fanboy" is used in a positive way. But it's all about context, and - again - whether or not we see the post. The same applies to "troll" and other such name-calling.

What may at times seem like an inconsistency in moderation is likely one of three things: we didn't see a problem post, we saw it but decided no action was required, or some action was taken that isn't visible to anyone other than the person involved. The bottom line is that all posters are held to the same rules, so if you feel something hasn't been addressed, report it.

Without any intention of derailing or discouraging the conversation, I did want to just point out that (a) we always attempt to consider each concern on its own merits, and accordingly (b) if you find it insulting, please do report it. I'm not saying this will always result in the post being deleted or any other action being taken, but you should at least know that we will read your report and look into it.

mkrishnan said this better than I did, and earlier in the thread, too. I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents as an example that feedback and questions ARE read and considered. I'm definitely not trying to derail or discourage either, so carry on...

Great Post!;)

Event goes as follows:

  • Introduction of Steve looking healthier then ever (Remember he said he had to gain 20lbs )
  • iWork X & iLife X (Some talk of Mobile Me & iWork.com beta)
  • Notebook refresh (Maybe a return to the express card slot for high end 15" )
  • New Cinema displays ( New 30" Model & 36" Model)
  • Steve Exits the stage and then reappears coming down from above (the Apple heavens) with the Tablet.

I personally don't think I'll use the tablet. I'm a Video/Photography Pro & I also program for the Mac Platform, so unless the Tablet has iPhone SDK installed, I see no use for it. If they do a really good job re-enhancing the MacBook Air (Which I really hope they add 4GB Ram & 160GB+SSD), I'll be more compelled to get that instead of the tablet.

Either way history will be made and Steve will forever be praised for his visions and contributions to the world we live in. In Steve we Trust

Is it OK to call this dude a fanboy? Well, I'm doing it anyway. :D

I think it depends on the context but probably shouldn't be considered an insult in most cases.

Personally I am a little sick of people hiding behind moderators simply because they lack the thickness of skin to accept a dissenting opinion. Worse than that is moderators pacifying the great over-sensitive. (I realize it can be an awkward dilemma.) People everywhere could really use a little mellowing out.

But that's the thing: most people who use the term "fanboy" lately use it because they don't accept a dissenting opinion. I know that a lot of users defend Apple too much but it seems that lately if anyone defends anything that Apple does, even for good reason and presenting a logical argument, they're called a fanboy.

It's not about people being too sensitive and feeling offended, the problem is that "fanboy" is rarely ever used in a good way, mostly it's just used to stir the pot. Trolling isn't allowed, why should that be?

The fact is, these forums are 75% full of fanboys and girls that go running to mods the instant someone says anything that makes the fanboy have to think too hard about what their motivation is for being here. It's a site for kindergartners that are chronologically much older, and can't handle any criticism on the internet but still want the satisfaction of spewing their own uninformed opinions on all things Apple, whether it's the stock price, Apple's marketing strategies, or a myriad of other things that they know next to nothing about.

I mean, good god, there's a whole thread on whether someone should be placed in "timeout" for calling someone a fanboy. Just the very idea of "timeout" on a message board is enough to make the average internet user throw up in disgust. Grow up.
