Today, doing a simple search for a file in the Mavericks' Finder resulted in the fans spinning up to howling banshee noise levels (like when Handbraking). Kernel task and something called "systemstats" were using lots of CPU time: up to more than 270% in the case of the latter!

I wonder whether it was to do with the sought-after file being located on a USB disk? It was also during indexing of the USB disk that the computer became extremely slow, and unresponsive.

Despite Mac OS X's claims of being able to multi-task, during this episode everything became highly unresponsive, much more so than when I'm using e.g. Handbrake.

I bought my first mac in 2011 (was a pc-guy before) and been upgrading all along and never had a problem...... until now....2 month with mavericks.. Mavericks sucks big time!
everything worked so nice and I had a nice "work flow" before.
I`m gonna go back to 10.8 when i figure out how to go back without having made a Time Machine backup.
Mavericks feels like Windows millennium!!!

This forum is hilarious.

When Apple was pushing the late 10.8.x builds, lots of MR users were here running the DP of Mavericks and saying "who cares? bring on mavericks", "ML is old news", "Why are they updating ML still?". And so on.

Now that Mavericks is out, there are many threads, like this one, complaining about it.

I just find it funny.

I will say my main issue with it is that I get beachballs now and then and when you first get to the desktop/dock, it seems to take a while to "settle down" if you know what I mean (i.e. it seems slow).

Anyway, MR folk are a fickle bunch.

I think most people upgrade os just because u can and its usually gets a little bit better..... but not now with mavericks.... it just went real bad!
and when things get bad u start threads like this.
when something sucks... it sucks...... but some people don't want to see it for a reason i found funny!

You're making the mistake that many Apple apologists do... assuming that the people who said one thing are the same people who later say the opposite. That's simply not true.

Even if what you assume is true, who of those saying "who cares? bring on mavericks" wanted an operating system that was going to drag their computer down?

Apple has (had?) a reputation for producing quality OS upgrades. Having gone from Snow Leopard -> Lion -> Mountain Lion -> Mavericks (on different MBPs) it is pretty obvious to me that there is a slow but steady decline in the quality of OSX.

I'm hoping that Apple can do a massive cleanup of Mavericks on the next update.

I seem to be one of the lucky ones - with some trepidation I upgraded a Core 2 Duo MacBook straight from Lion, half expecting the need to go back and do a complete fresh install.
Everything works, the OS feels more snappy than Lion, and we're happy (it's my wife's work machine but I have an account on there as well for occasional use and troubleshooting).
The only thing I've done is upgraded the RAM from 4 to 6 GB as I could see Mavericks seems to be using more than Lion.

Oh, and thanks to Mavericks for giving the aging battery a whole hour's extra life :)

Cheers :)

Hugh

So if we're all Apple apologists, then what are you, a Windows apologist? I simply tell it like I experience it. I have no love for Apple as a company. I think they're largely corporate scum just like Microsoft in many respects, namely greed and overly controlling. I like OSX overall better than Windows for a number of reasons including no registry, no viruses, very little malware and no god-awful Windows8 interface. I've never cared for Linux, especially the horrible packaging system that is all over the place across every version known to man that makes easy software upgrading a chore if anyone stops updating the repositories, etc. I'll take OSX over that crap any day, even with a few odd quirks from time-to-time.

Let's face it. Some people are having issues and some are not having any at all. I see people saying this is the "worst" upgrade in the history of Apple, but I wonder what they're smoking. Yes, I've seen a few glitches, but Tiger and Leopard both gave me plenty of kernel crashes. I haven't seen a single one on Mavericks (or Mountain Lion for that matter). My only real complaint is that they don't put a second dock on the second screen like the menu bar. And multiple monitors are now SOOOOOO much better than before. By comparison, I noticed very little in the way of improvements between Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro (that doesn't support newer Lion/ML features like Airplay and Airdrop, which are cool on my Mini). But even my old MBP now has better multiple monitor support.

The problem with all these "Mavericks sucks" posts is that most of them are very generic and don't explain "why" it sucks as if they just automatically assume it sucks for everyone when it clearly does not. Not even close. I especially wonder about those that jump on here two minutes after upgrade and start whining that the system feels slower when it's been posted dozens of times that Mavericks does a good 20-60+ minutes of optimizing and spotlight re-indexing when it's first installed (Leopard did something very similar on my PPC machine when upgrading from Tiger) but when it's done, it goes back to normal. Mavericks doesn't feel faster or slower here on my 2008 machine or my 2012 machine. It feels "about the same". I don't love it. I don't hate it. Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and 10.8.5 were both mega-stable (10.8.4 was fracked up bad and ruined a lot of hard drives with its sleep bug). But Snow Leopard sucked when it was first released. I don't think it was stable until at least 10.6.3. Here we are on 10.9.0 and people expect perfection. Well, don't upgrade on V1.0 if you want perfection. Wait until the reports are all saying it's stable.

I tried it out because I had Mountain Lion backed up on a bootable external with CCC. I can go back at any time if I want. But the lure of better multiple monitor support and full screen behavior was something I had to try and it's been good enough that I don't want to go back to Mountain Lion even with a few quirks. Others should decide for themselves, but trashing V1.0 without giving Apple time to address the issues is pointless, IMO.

Oh bologna. Snow Leopard was OK, but it wasn't much better than the final version of Leopard, really and Leopard was a mixed bag (and had a lot of issues at first too), being noticeably slower than Tiger, but having some nice new features like Quicklook and Spaces added. I remember seeing a lot of people saying Lion sucked at first, but I think even it was OK by the end of its cycle. Some of us weren't ready to give up Rosetta at that point, though. Mountain Lion was the best version of OSX ever made, IMO (other than not having Rosetta as an option for a few older software packages) and Mavericks doesn't feel all that different to me other than MASSIVELY BETTER multiple monitor support (if you don't use multiple monitors, I guess you wouldn't notice or care). It also finally has OpenGL 4.0 (big improvement over 3.x).

I'm hoping that Apple can do a massive cleanup of Mavericks on the next update.

Despite following these threads for some time, I don't know what "massive" cleanups it needs. It's perfectly stable here. I see more whining about the brighter side-dock bar than anything else (purely cosmetic). I see some generic claims about slower performance, most made within minutes of booting Mavericks, especially for the first time. What's massively broken?

More than anything, this idea that Apple always has great upgrades with no issues is a myth. Having been here since Tiger, I've witnessed all kinds of issues with some upgrades. It's typically why you wait and read the reports of people that don't mind being guinea pigs before upgrading. It's why you back up before upgrading. Software support for Mountain Lion hasn't dried up or anything yet, for goodness sake.

It's typically why you wait and read the reports of people that don't mind being guinea pigs before upgrading.

And plenty of those reports were giving Mavericks a green light, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that so many are experiencing issues (Finder beachballs among others) that were not widely reported in the beta phase.

I'm still discovering new Mavericks idiocy. Today, clicking on the Spotlight icon in the menubar does... ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! No search bar, just ... nothing. What a pain, I really regret upgrading. Stupid stupid Mavericks.

There. That's better.

Edit: clearly something's screwy. I get the following every time i click on Spotlight:

4/12/2013 9:50:07.100 pm SystemUIServer[14694]: Spotlight: Request visibility timeout

and the following appears frequently also:

4/12/2013 9:50:45.428 pm mdworker[15251]: (Normal) Import: Using too many resources after 1984 files (wired: 0 resident: 38960 swapped: 0 regions: 2075), hit usage threshold importing /Volumes/XMedia/Steppe/Media/091026/Photos/PA051297.JPG, exiting to clean up now.

Ugh.

My comment was specifically to the person (Yaboze) I was responding to. I did not label everyone Apple apologists. However, if you believe that all Apple users are one monolithic group and that the supportive words of some and the critical words of others constitute an irrational contradiction as if the same person said both, then perhaps my comments are relevant to you as well.

It's really about common sense. Just because person "X" says, "bring on Mavericks" and person "Y" says, "ouch, Mavericks is terrible" doesn't mean that there is some kind of flip-flopping fickleness amongst Apple users as Yaboze has accused some of us of.

I read your post in which you mention you upgraded your old TV 1st gen. I have one and I love it, of course I hacked it but I couldn't do all the mods you did! Can you please contact me and explain how you did those mods? If you prefer it would be enough to have just a simple answer to this post.
Thank you very much, it was a lot of time I was searching for an TV enthusiast!

P.S. (Sorry is my english is not perfect, I'm italian...)

You don't seem to be able to receive private messages at this time and it's off-topic here, so you could reply in the thread you're referring to. I do not have the CrystalHD card installed currently, though, just the regular hack as my current HD projector and 93" screen is still 720p as is my 47" plasma. I just used the atv-usb-creator method on a USB memory stick to install XBMC.

Mavericks is not worth the money you pay for it.

It slows everything down. My guess is that the power saving tricks are backfiring. I've got programs running that I expect to be eating up some significant CPU cycles and instead, they beachball and show CPU usage of less than 5%.

Meanwhile memory just vanishes for no good reason. See the attached screenshot. My system was paralyzed. I have 16GB of memory and I wasn't doing much with it. It was so bad, the mouse was lagging until... I quit iTunes. Who knew that acting as an iPod would bring a MBP Core i7 to it's knees.

Garbage.

Mavericks - what can I say?

I work with testing developers code on various Mac systems. Mavericks feels like a slow smoked hog. Near 40 sec boot on 2011 i7 MPB w/4GB ram (10.6.8 takes less than 20 sec on the same machine) and over 30 sec boot on 2013 Mac Mini i7 w/16GB ram - both clean installs. Something smells of Windows Vista here. Did Balmer move to Cupertino? Do over please :D

I must be another lucky one. Base mid 2010 MBP. 4GB. Stock 250GB Hard Drive (almost full). No issues.

Upgraded from Snow Leopard-->Mountain Lion-->Mavericks
(not one clean install)

Good luck to everyone else. Hopefully the next update will solve your issues.

You mean nothing?

Yeah. I'm obviously exaggerating and venting... But no kernel panic crashes so maybe it could be a lot worse. It just seems more annoying because inexplicable slowness is the problem and not stability. My machine isn't even close to maxing out anything. It just wants to spend the day at the beach when I ask it to work. (Double Pun intended). I really hope they get it sorted out soon, this is really killing me.

I'll give you an issue for your 2010 MBP - use a FireWire drive...

These took away the "4 finger swipe down" to show desktop. Now I gotta use that weird 3 finger pinch spread to show my desktop and it is a finicky gesture that doesn't always work. Lame. Bring back the 4 finger swipe down to show desktop.

Maverick is terrible

I don't know, but some of these replies sound like advertisements for Maverick. Like the person in the original post, I work with images and movies. I use imovie a great deal. I upgraded to Maverick two weeks ago. I also upgraded imovie to 10.0.1. What a mistake!!! Instantly all of the movie clips in my folders were stretched when I opened them. The aspect ratio changed. I posted many questions on various forums but no one was able to tell me why. I gave Maverick the benefit of the doubt and thought it might be a Quicktime thing. No adjustments worked. Worse yet, the problem persisted in the new imovie (by the way, I could find no advantage to the new version. It certainly wasn't "streamlined". Just a lot of work re-learning how to do basic functions.). I upgraded mid-project (stupidly). I ended up with two different aspect ratios in the same project. Even when I added clips in that I'd already put in the project, the ratio was different. Also, when I plugged in my Thunderbolt display, I couldn't get it to mirror my Macbook Pro. Please don't send me solutions to these problems. I know my way around the block with these devices. Nothing fixed this issue. Once again I posted my problems on many forums and no one had any solutions. In fact, it seemed that there were known issues with Maverick and external displays. I worked very hard to fix these problems. It was a very frustrating two weeks. Two days ago I gave up. I dumped Maverick and reinstalled Lion. I had saved my old version of imovie (9.0.8) and am using it again. EVERYTHING WORKS again. I'm so relieved.

Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of Apple. Have been for years. All my devices are Apple. I love my new 5s phone and ipad. But you can't put a pig in a nice suit and say it's beautiful. Maybe I'll try upgrading again in six months. This time I'll check the forums first to see if any of massive number of issues are resolved.

Meanwhile, if you are one of the smart people doing that right now...my advice is don't upgrade to Maverick or imovie. Not yet.
