Just looking at the BIG DUMB IPHONE pic of the iPad should scream obvious flop in innovation. Tiny app icons on a bigger screen...REALLY? That's it? That's the BIG announcement? PULEEASE...stop, just stop trying to convince us that we should be excited.

I feel like it was a toaster demo. It makes toast, and since toast can be used in 100,000 different ways, THIS IS REVOLUTIONARY!!!!!!!!

SOMEONE doesn't like toast...

You do know that toasters predated and pushed up the demand for sliced bread.... so toasters were the greatest thing before sliced bread! ;)

The touch interface is fine. It's the severe limitations apple imposed on how we can use the device, the inability to download files, the inability to run programs not preapproved by apple, or hell to even browse the internet, are not okay.

That was barely acceptable on the iPhone, and that's because it was just a freaking cellphone.

This is supposed to replace netbooks. Putting the same limitations on it that a company puts on cellphones is NOT okay.

... It's 2010 and a so called tablet computer is released. By a company none other than apple. Revolutionary? On my MacBook pro I can go to a website and download mp3 files of sound clips from a website. Like let's say I am interested in the tv show knight rider and their is a site online that has mp3 sound clip files from the show. On the ipad I can't download them?

No GPS (it has the limited cell tower based GPS found on the iPhone 2G, not the true GPS that can offer up turn by turn navigation found on the 3GS)
It has Assisted GPS and a compass, just like iPhone 3GS.
No Additional Touch Gestures (Here's the kinds of gestures we were hoping for... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFnavI57gyQ)
That looks like it'd be part of some finger dancing app... not getsures you would use really...
No Java or Flash support (no hulu.com)
Hulu might be making an app, and there is the possibility that more sites go with HTML5 in the future.
The enormous bezel is a massive eyesore. I thought Apple was all about design, so how they could make such a large and ugly bezel for a premier device escapes me
Not really, I think it's fine, where would you put your fingers when holding it otherwise? You would accidentally press buttons and stuff.
No Ability to run custom Apps not preapproved by Apple (Google Voice, uTorrent etc)
Jailbreak
No ability to connect to a bluetooth mouse/keyboard
You can connect to a bluetooth keyboard, but I'm not sure why you'd want to use a mouse.

If I'm using my iPad to screenshare into my Macbook, I'd want to use a mouse rather than reaching for the screen for every mouse gesture I wanted to make. Once I take out the bluetooth keyboard, I typically place the screen at a comfortable distance for reading. I would have to move my hand from my typing position to the relatively far away screen to make mouse movements. For another example, if I'm using a Mac Mini as a Hulu box in the family room with my LCD tv, I want to type with a keyboard on my lap so I want a keyboard/mouse combo like this Logitech diNovo. I hope the same thing would work with an iPad.

Seriously, a huge chunk of the entertainment to be had on the internet is based on flash and downloads.

My friends always send me hilarious, or really epic aweinspiring clips and sites via email.

Things like this....

http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/525347 (Click the big white letters that say Play)

Of course, on the ipad, I would be inable to access them.

Similarly, I love downloading and collecting funny clips, sounds or videos I run into online to have with me whereever or show to others, even if I have no internet access. On the ipad, that's not a possibility.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg as to how severely cripped Apple made the iPad.

Well if it so cripped(sic) in your eyes it isn't for you. If you are a die hard flash fanatic, obviously and iPad isn't in the cards.

What many completely fail to grasp is that the iPad isn't meant to be everything to everyone. They might lose 10% (I doubt it will be even that much) of the potential market to flash lovers, but that is pretty much irrelevant in the end.

The iPad will be a great reader/surfer tablet that you will just have to miss out on. Your loss.

thats just utterly stupid silly stuff. if u cant bear to wait until u get home to watch NG then get a different tablet. u can also use a handy dandy feature called bookmarks and save ur HD for music/movies of quality... or maybe even work if people even plan to use this thing for anything but flash and conference ichat of the inside of ur nose... the only thing that seems like it may not be good is no USB.. but in this day and age someone can e-mail you anything.

just look at the original iPod thread, people say it wont be a success and apple needs to focus on their Xservers or something.. can't beleive how off the mark people are on this site

Are you for real? the iPad is crippled because it doesn't let you "download and collect funny clips"?

To be able to download and collect "your" clips, there needs to be a mechanism to allow users to browse the file system. A mechanism for downloading. A player and a system in place to make sure that whatever you download IS playable. What if a user downloads something in an obscure format? etc etc. All this means more software, more complex UI. The more software, means the more slow things will become, the more confused the user will get.

You see, when you make a product you can't just ADD STUFF. Even the simplest features to implement might add to the complexity of a user interface because they need to be there. Whether a user will use them or not. That's why when you develop a product you need to see who your core audience is. And with the iPad, Apple decided to go for mum and dad. Not the internet nerds. Not the funny-clips-collectors. It has nothing to do with "crippling" anything. If anything the iPad, is doing the exact opposite.

To me it is more than just not being able to download funny clips, what about downloading anything PDF files, text files, software, source code etc. I guess what I am saying is that compared to my laptop the ipad os is more restrictive. To me apple is like a great band that has sold out, I like there earlier work better. And now they have gained more of a wide spread popularity. But I don't know if they are going in the right direction. Just my opinion.

That was barely acceptable on the iPhone, and that got a pass because it was cellphone, a device everyone already needed anyways. This is supposed to replace netbooks....

No iSight Camera
No Videocalling/Conferencing/iCha
No GPS
No Multitasking
<Bulk of long Rant snipped>

And that's just the tip of the iceberg as to how severely cripped Apple made the iPad.

The obvious problem with these (divorced from reality) wish lists is that they are complete fantasy. Showing zero understanding of economics, engineering, or business fundamentals.

The only thing Apple could have built that comes remotely close to meeting it would be a Macbook Air Tablet. The minimum price for entry would be similar to the Air, ~$1500 (that is before ridiculous fantasy items like a 1080 OLED screen )

Jumping from $500 to $1500 moves it from mass market device to expensive executive toy and into the realm of irrelevance.

By sticking to a $500 entry they can capture a huge market (relative to $1500). I for one only became interested after hearing the entry price.

A $500 entry price pretty much guarantees this would essentially be a large Touch, but there is nothing wrong with that.

Except in this case the toaster is capable of bringing hundreds of thousands of innovative applications in a portable form factor.

I'd buy that toaster in a heartbeat.

Of course you could view those on an iPad.

But it's not Apple's fault that you can't. Newgrounds could either A) rid their site of that awful Flash platform and get with the times or B) stick with the horrible platform and port it to an iPhone app.

No multitasking = deal breaker.

Same for the new iPhone; if it doesn't have multitasking I'll get a Hero.

A Hero? Really? Don't get me wrong, I work for Google and have done a lot of work promoting Android, but spec for spec you would be so far behind the next iPhone. At least say "if the new iPhone doesn't have multi-tasking I'll get whatever the newest Android phone is."

I don't get why such an emphasis has been placed on multi-tasking. And people should know by now that if and when Apple implements it, they will do it right. Unlike Android or RIM or Windows Mobile Currently do. Hell, my Palm Pre does it beautifully, but it's not a feature I'm dying for on the iPad.

yeah like a great band who sold out.

Perfect analogy.

In other words your opposition to the iPad is absurd. Just like someone criticizing a band for making money.

The Hero is my favourite phone in existence right now. Waiting to see what Apple come up with before purchasing one though.

The Hero has an incredibly intuitive UI just like the iPhone, but so much more: multitasking, a 5MP camera, widget support, it's "open" - you can install whatever you like on it, Android is being developed at a faster rate, and much much more.

I don't see how it would be behind the latest iPhone if the latest iPhone doesn't even support something as crucial as multitasking. Apple needs to get out of the dark ages.

marksman

There is nothing wrong with selling out per se.

why can't I criticize a band who I liked there work, but then they changed to reach a more wide spread audience.

And yet Apple told me that the iPad was intended to replace their laptops! Oh no, wait, they never did.

You can share all the internet non-flash content you want with others, via e-mail etc. That's I how do it, I can't remember the last time I downloaded content so that I could share it with others. I can bookmark all the files I want online; anything super-important goes on my desktop or laptop.
